Not like the review unit I tested...
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I loved the TCL 6 Series Roku 55 I was given to "review," but I hate whatever this Trash I got from Best Buy. The box/markings/outer shell/menus and more all say TCL 6 Series Roku; actually this box advertises the 144hz as native so lets start there. 144hz 4k has never been "native" on this panel. However, it's achieved by using a Freesync VRR and DSC enabled GPU. HDMI 2.1 can't "natively" do 4k 144hz HDR w/ 4:4:4 chroma as it would require more than 48 gigabits without compression! I may be wrong or missed it on the review unit - i couldn't get 4k 144 to work previously without enabling vrr and I couldn't get it to work on this one at all. Moving on, it took roughly a week to arrive. The box was soaking wet to the point pieces fell off. I'm not upset it was damp on top that day as it had been raining, but they had to of let it sit in water... I paid 50 bucks extra for the in home delivery and I suppose at least they "delivered" it. We opened the box up and made sure it was dry inside which it seemed to be. Despite that bit of fortune, taking this TV out was a pain, and unlike any before it, they used actual duck/packing tape all over the screen to hold the easy peel layer and several bits of cardboard in their place (key phrase ALL OVER - and I took photos just incase). If I hadn't use the absolute MOST careful, most meticulous (time-consuming) method it would have damaged the panel - in fact the tape pulled so hard it raised the LCD with the easy-peel as I removed it. I have seen a piece or two of shipping/heavy glue tape used sparingly, but nothing like this. We finally got it set up and Roku installed. The picture looked dull/washed, but I thought it was hoypefully just the mode it was in. Every mode except normal is washed out (this goes for the hdr and gaming modes too). I pegged <90% P3 in every HDR mode except normal (normal is ~93% D3 and mid to low 70's rec2020). Dolby Vision looked bad period (first time ever) and it was LIFELESS using iQ so I gave up measuring. It was 5/10 on the accuracy and the worst I've seen on a upper-end model. I couldn't get it to hit the preferred 9/10, but I gave it my best shot; the Roku os and even the "expert settings" only allow so much tuning. In the end our post calibration was only at about 8/10 in accuracy (to push it further made the image too warm and a huge hit to white areas/colors). Despite all This There was a little good news: The amazing contrast (5k to 1 native, 50k to 1 with local contrast dimming set to high). It's the first budget pannel I've tested that offers a true miniled experience (such a shame)- almost no halo/bloom in 94% (Oled is 99.9% and upper end Neo Qled is 96%)of the test content and just the slightest bit (same size as the white curso I used) in test patterns. It gets extremely bright! Measured 1400 nitts peak in HDR and up to 780 in SDR. HOWEVER.... This all goes away the moment you change From High to Medium (Low is unwatchable; we won't discuss Low because I'd end up in the ER). Changing this setting transforms the Mini Led Full Array Dimming display INTO a "DirectLit" panel that has raised blacks (basically grey) covering the entirety of the screen. You also loose a fair bit of the color accuracy/saturation as various hues and shades shift into an entirely different spectrum. So Why would you change the local contrast Igneus? Well... ThIS TV's capacitors/rear-end electronics AREA begins to scream, whine, and on occasion pop (like a real-life Decepticon transforming in the background of your TV) the moment a dark screen or significant dark area is displayed - it reaches its loudest when the screen is completely black (ie during a test). At that critical moment it alternates between miniature tires squeeling, air blasting, and/or a large can of compressed air with a pin hole. It's worth noting the display model had some coil whine, but it was nothing like this. It's further to be of note the 55 inch I was provided for review (it too was a 55R655) had no issues whatsoever, 3x better color (larger more complete gamut plus greater volume), better sound (like a true premium TV), and all the picture modes were usable even if not entirely color accurate. I am so upset. Was on the phone with Best buy today for 2.5 hours. Despite what has to be their fault in shipping the tv (i just don't see TCL letting this pass qc nor do I see them using shipping tape on the screen), they won't refund the total amount. Im out 50 bucks to try a TV from BestBuy. They coming to pick it up on Tuesday..
