Got this bad boy 3 days ago and it’s the best 4K HRD tv I’ve had . I’ve had the LG UK6300 and The Samsung NU6900, this TCL at least to me has a better picture . The 399.99 is well spent with this one . Dolby Vision is outstanding !

So this tv replaced a 15 year old 52" 1080p console tv that was inside our expensive entertainent surround that we did inot want to replace. I needed a tv that was 48.5" width to fit inside the unit and that narrowed it down to this tv only! I was concerned about reading the comments on line about poor viewing angle on this tv and some stated that unless you were directly in front of the tv you would not really see the picture. If I was able to choose another tv, I would have just because if these comments as the tv is in our large great room with seating in front and on both sides of the tv. To my surprise, we can view the picture in all seating locations. Picture looks great! I am sure not as good as $1000 or higher unit but looking at the picture, I am unable for us to justify spending 2.5-3 times the price for something else.

A great Roku 4K TV with HDR at a great price!

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I did my homework before deciding on purchasing this TCL 55S515. The picture quality is good right out of the box. But I did go into the advanced settings and tweaked it a little bit to get it to my liking since I’m a big sports fan and I want a great picture when watching sports. I do most of my watching TV at night and I like to watch TV in a dark room. I find that the backlighting on this 4K TV is not as bright as my previous Sharp 52inch LCD TV, so I guess it will be something that I will have to get used too. I did watch some 4K programming on YouTube via Roku and the picture quality was GREAT! One of the best things that I like about this TV is the Roku software. It’s very responsive and very easy to use. To use the Roku software you have to sign up for an account which is free. Only thing that you have to pay for is a subscription to some of the individual apps such as DIRECTV NOW, Netflix, Hulu, etc. Most apps like the Roku app it’s free! Overall this TCL 4K TV with HDR is of great quality at a very low price. Highly recommended ,

Initially I went in to get the sharp 4k roku but after talking to the BB rep we ended up with this one. The reason was this TV has a true HDR not an "enhanced to HDR" To me the coolest feature is if you run an antenna with a USB flash drive you can pause live TV up to 90 min. I would recommend if you can get the next series up do it. The reason is the 6 series is back lit not edge lit. Causing this TV to have light bleeding meaning on super dark frames you see the color is not even. Don't get me wrong this is a good TV for game room/spare TV situations. If this were my main TV I would have gone with a much higher end TV.

Decent TV, but I do not like the remote

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Overall, this is a good TV for this price point, but the remote could be better. This TV has a decent picture quality and side-to-side viewing angle. I like the way Roku TV is the menu system, instead of just an app launched by the TV's menu system (In other words, the tuner, input selection and TV settings are all integrated into the Roku menu.) Out-of-the-box, the brightness was set to max and I had to bump it down a bit. I have only had it a day, but the Wi-Fi was easy to setup and has been a rock-solid connection. If you have never used a Roku, this remote may not bother you. But, if you regularly use Roku, this remote will annoy you right from the start. Although the layout is fairly consistent with Roku products, it just feels cheaply made: 1) When I first closed the battery door, I had an issue getting the door closed all of the way. It took a few tries to close it without leaving a 1/16" gap. 2) The buttons press unevenly, and emit a "click" sound when pressed. 3) At first I thought the buttons were not working well at all, but then I realized this is an IR remote instead of RF remote like Roku users are accustom to. And, it seems subpar for an IR remote: the range is poor, and your aim has to be spot-on. If you do not see the light below the name plate blink when you press the button, the IR is not being detected by the TV. I might try to buy a second remote, because I have an uneasy feeling that this remote will not last the lifespan of the TV itself.

    Great Inexpensive Entry to 4K

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Has been the best inexpensive TV we have purchased. It might not be as sharp as the top of the line 55 inch but pretty dang good. After years of use it is still just as snappy in the menu as it was when purchased.

Has a great picture but the WebOS apps are very sluggish and glitchy, especially the FuboTV app. Recently got so fed up I bought a Roku 4K Streaming Stick and plugged into HDMI and it works like a charm now. The Roku remote will even control the TV. Roku has a much better app selection too.

    Fantastic Picture

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I was looking for a replacement 55" TV, and made the decision to look for a "value priced" TV. I didn't really care about all the smart features, but it doesn't hurt to have them. The TCL was the one I wanted, but I did actually bought and returned a couple of other brands based on price that were OK, but not great. BB put the TCL 5 Series on sale, so back I went with another return, and picked up the TCL 55" 5-Series. So far it was been a great decision. There are a few odd things about this unit, most of which have already been discussed in other posts. The initial startup process is a little long and cumbersome, but not awful. The remote is decidedly simple with few buttons compared to lots of other remotes, but it works. The usual TV picture and audio settings are all there, but are a little hard to find until you get used to how they are arranged. The TV defaults to a splash screen that shows all the inputs and all the various Roku apps (which you can customize). I wanted the TV to go straight to my TV source on startup, and finally I found the way to make that happen buried in custom settings. I could go on about some of the other little quirks, but let me just say there is 148 page user guide found online at tclusa.com and NOT included with the TV that explains everything. Its worth reading. The biggest positive on the TCL TV is unbelievable video quality. The 4K up scaling was fantastic. I watched Jurassic Park on Showtime and was amazed by the clarity and depth of images. This was a BIG improvement over the 4K images generated by some of the cheaper 4K TV's I saw. The TV speaker sound is acceptable, but I run digital through a surround system that connected to the TCL just fine and sounds great. To summarize, this isn't the cheapest 4K HDR smart TV on the market, but for around $100 more than the cheapies you get a solid performer with an excellent picture and a reliable Roku interface. Pay a little extra and get a TV you will love.

    Sufficient under the right circumstances

I’ve had this TV for almost a month now, and while at times I’m impressed, I’m also extremely agitated with it. Agitated enough to create a Best Buy account and write this review. Cutting to the chase - the roku smart tv part of this is set is utter garbage. Netflix ? Forget it. You will get kicked off 15 seconds to every two minutes, five times in a row or more, before getting to watch anything. Then you have to find what you decided to watch and start (and pray) all over again, only to ultimately get booted again. Same story with the direct TV app. Could be a minute, could be 3/4’s of the way in to a show, then you get kicked off. It’s not the internet connection, my 3 year old Vizio worked flawlessly under the same speeds. The hdr 4K picture is pretty good for the price, but unless you have an alternative smart tv interface (like Apple TV / Xbox), I would sincerely not encourage you to buy this product. On the plus side, I ’ve been so irate with this thing I have flipped the tv off all together and picked up a book instead. Entertainment shouldn’t be irritating. Pay more for a better brand, or rely on something else to stream your apps.

2 weeks in, it's perfect so far

I purchased this a couple weeks ago and so far I love it and have no regrets (except not waiting for black friday to save 50 bucks on it, but oh well). The picture is great once you get the brightness how you want it (I use vivid mode), and generally I just have no complaints. I am very pleased I went with this cheaper option than splurging on the more "high end" brands. Just to be upfront: this is the first 4k TV I have owned and previously made do with old 720p HDTVs and CRTVs. I am easy to please. For those of you who are more demanding, maybe there are some shortcomings that are dealbreakers, but for me, it's just what I wanted. The only thing I can't speak to is the durability. We'll see.

This is a great tv. the picture is pristine and I love that it has dolby vision and Atmos. The only downside isn't even the TV's fault, it's Microsoft's. They updated Cision with Dolby and left the manufacturers out of the loop.

After bad purchase, replacement is great!

Even after a bad experience the first time, I'm doing FIVE STARS! First TV purchase kept turning off randomly after 30 minutes, 15 minutes, 1 hour. No set rhyme or reason. The screen would go to pixels, turn green, and shut off. We wrote TCL to get help, but they were taking so much time to reply that we felt we better return the set to Best Buy and get another before our return window expired. THEY WERE GREAT. We could have bought a different set, but we decided to give this TCL a second chance and I'm so glad we did! The picture on this tv is crisp, bright and a pleasure for tv viewing. No issues at all. We love it! Would buy it again and again!!! Best Buy felt our first purchase had an issue with the motherboard and they were more than willing to help us be satisfied. WE ARE!

All I can say I was a little sceptical about purchasing a 4K tv of such that was not expensive and not really not knowing the brand of TCL...and with that being said I'm glad I did cause the picture is amazing especially playing blurays and 4k content...the sound on the tv is awesome if you put it in theater mode as the speakers give off a nice sound ...you do not need a soundbar for this tv if your using it for the bedroom ...I haven't tried video gaming on it yet which I am really hyped to see how the response will be but overall I am a Happy customer...Let's just see how long this tv last ...the 55" is awesome buy ...go ahead people slash the overpriced over the top expensive tvs and save some doe...TCL is the way to go

    Great Bedroom TV

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Nothing super about this model. I consider it a great bedroom TV. Colors are fine, brightness is fine, HDR is a little garbage but in the age where OLEDs are cheaper its a better go-to. I would say for all "Smart" TVs this one with the Roku software is one of the better. Chromecasts moot this point but if all you do is fire up YouTube or Amazon: this will be just fine! For the price I can't complain and the 5 series I would say for a bedroom is perfect. The 4 feel too cheap and the 6 does not merit the price to place.
