Very happy with this TV

I bought this TV on Saturday and have been playing rdr2 and assassins creed odyssey on my One X. Everything looks great!
I calibrated it to what rtings.com recommend and I couldn’t have asked for a better set, especially for $600.
The whole “panel lottery” is seriously overblown and may have been an issue earlier in 2018, but this set I have is flawless. No DSE or banding at all. Have been watching daredevil on Netflix with Dolby vision and it’s a night and day difference without it.
Overall, I’m very happy with this set and would recommend it to anyone.

So, I'll start off by saying I'm probably one of the lesser A/V folks who will provide a review, but I have no complaints with this TV. It's my first venture into 4k, so I don't have much to compare it with. No screen issues that I can notice, seems bright enough, colors are vibrant. Yes, the speakers are not very good, we plan on getting a soundbar, but haven't yet and can still hear audio just fine. Like most people have mentioned, for the $$ I don't think you can beat it!

Roku interface is awesome, uniformity issues

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
The Roku Smart TV interface is awesome enough that I was willing to play the panel lottery a few times with this TV. I tried the 55R617 model through Walmart as well as the 55R615 through BB, and either the QC with the 615 is better or I just got lucky, because the Best Buy panel was the best by far.
Roku Interface: I tested both Vizio and Samsung Smart TV interfaces, and Roku was light years away the best. The remote is beautifully simple - you can use the one that comes with the TV, or the smartphone app if you have the BB version and want voice search and to be able to watch tv with headphones, but I ended up actually pairing an "Enhanced Voice Remote" purchased through Roku and it works perfectly with my 55R615. The interface is super fast, simple, and incredibly intuitive. Fiddling with settings, flipping back & forth between inputs/apps, and even just changing the volume is intuitive and faster than any other Smart platform I've tried. Just awesome.
Video Quality: Picture quality out of the box is great, but I fiddled with the settings a fair bit anyway. Fortunately it's easy in the Roku interface - start playing some content, and press the asterisk on the remote to go to the video/audio settings. Allows you to do so while content is still running, which I find really helpful. I'm not a fan of motion interpolation ("soap opera effect"), called "Action Smoothing" on this TCL, so turned it off. I usually keep it on Movie or Normal mode with some slight color/tint adjustments in Advanced Picture Settings. This TV gets incredibly bright if you want it to, which is great for watching in daylight/brightly lit rooms. Colors are beautiful, with deep blacks (particularly with Local Contrast on), and HD content looks fantastic.
Sound: the preset Sound Settings are helpful - "Speech" is particularly handy if you're like me and have trouble hearing dialogue in some content. Just like with video settings, click the asterisk on the remote when you're playing content to get to sound options. The lower ranges seem a little muddled, but overall these are surprisingly good in-tv speakers.
Inputs: these are on the offset towards the side of the TV, which makes them easy to access compared to other sets. The Roku interface makes it easy to name/customize them and switch back & forth rapidly.
Quality Control: hopefully they'll fix this with future models. The uniformity (banding/dirty screen effect) some people have complained about is definitely a thing. One panel we got was abjectly terrible, dead pixels everywhere. The other was better, but had bad banding. The 3rd was nearly perfect, but does have some minor dirty-screen effect. Other TVs around this price point can have uniformity issues (lots of reviews of the Vizo P-series with the same issue), so it's a tradeoff we were fine with given the incredible video quality, price, and interface.
TLDR: Screen uniformity/QC needs improvement, but overall video quality and the Roku Smart TV interface are absolutely incredible.

Best TV you can buy short of an OLED

This TV has surpassed any and all expectations I had for it. The local dimming handles everything so flawlessly. The HDR Dark setting with the tv picture brightness on bright looks the best for our living room. We have a bright living room during the day, and adjust backlight accordingly, and the glare is more than tolerable. At night, the tv is just beautiful, brightness is not an issue. On game mode, there's no input lag, and the XBOX One X looks even better than it did on my Samsung KU6300. Everything about this TV was done really, really well, considering its price point. I would recommend this to anyone!

I purchased my 55-inch TCL 6 series TV from Best Buy. The picture is phenomenal. Compared to my old LG 1080P, there is much higher resolution, and blacks are black, not some shade of gray. Setup is easy. I’m very happy with my new TV. I have not yet tried Doe B vision source programming, but I would forward to it. have not yet tried Dolby Vision source programming, but I look forward to it.

You Get What You Pay For; Crackling Sound
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
TV has a great picture for its price and for a few weeks I enjoyed watching all my HD programming on it, owned a Vizio M-series which was good but this was better, even with only 60 hz refresh rate. Roku also very nice, smooth interface and had just about every app I wanted. Didn't have the vertical banding that many talked about but there was slight shading in the corners; however, it was so slight that I only noticed it if I looked for it.
Sound wasn't anything to write home about like most smart TVs but was acceptable. Main issue with it was on certain apps like Amazon Prime you have to turn it to 100 and still not loud enough then with cable box or PS4 about 20 is too loud and it takes almost 30 seconds to turn it down on remote. Annoying but could live with it.
However, after about 10 weeks started to hear a crackle from I think the right speaker of the TV. Sounds like the speaker is shaking. At first it happened only on certain TV series like the OA then on certain Youtube videos. Now, almost 4 months after purchase its on more series and apps, to varying degrees.
Tried all the fixes recommended by googling then called TCL customer service. Not only were they not helpful at all but were almost combative. This was when the problem first started so the rep kept on emphasizing the fact that it occurred only on certain programs and apps and stating that if a technician came he wouldn't be able to fix anything. Maybe its true but the rep's attitude was confrontational and seemed like his main goal was to discourage me from putting in a service repair ticket and saving TCL the cost of a visit. And at first the customer service rep said he's heard about this issue "many times" and then later when I repeated that he contradicted himself and said the number of times is "on one hand". Then when I started to call him out on his circular and antagonistic demeanor (and I rarely ever do this to customer service reps) he just hung up on me.
A couple of other issues have popped up recently: a week ago, as the TV was on and on the Home menu and my remote was laying on the carpet in front of me, all my apps just disappeared. I spent the next day re-installing most of my apps and the next day all the apps just as mysteriously re-appeared, with the remote laying right in front of me. Also, the remote is Wifi and before you could angle any which way and it would work. now it has to be pointed within a certain angle at the TV. Irksome, especially considering the fact the only difference between the R-617 and R-615, a $30 difference, is the remote.
shame as I really liked the picture and the Roku and dislike the hassle of a return and buying a new TV. However, on top of the problems I mentioned (most of all the sound crackiling) I just don't have faith that this TV will last more than a year or 2, at least to th point where any problems I'd have would not make me want to buy another TV.
Pay the extra money to get a TV with as good a picture but doesn't have all the considerable risks that this model has. Won't be buying TCL again.

Best 4k under 1k

A friend bought me this as a house warming gift. It's the best 4k tv for under a $1000. It supports the major formats and one you turn gaming mode on games perform amazingly. Blacks are super black and that's due to how many dimming zones this tv has. Most led TV's are backlit from a led light that wraps around the perimeter of the tv. This tv has individual LEDs throughout the monitor. I believe 96 lights to be exact. That's impressive and innovative.

I swapped out my 8 year old 720p 55” Insignia Plasma for the 55” TCL LED 6 Series 4k. Read tons of reviews saying how amazing the TCL 6 Series was. Frankly, I’m not very impressed.
The TCL does well with HD content, but no so hot with less than HD. My old plasma had better contrast & black levels. I didn’t realize how important that was until after watching the TCL for several days. It makes a big difference.
The viewing angles are pretty poor on the TCL – my old plasma didn’t care where you were in the room & produced a consistently brilliant picture. The TCL LED – the picture quality quickly degrades once you get more than 5’ off center or too close to the screen.
Then there’s the ‘soap opera’ effect introduced by motion smoothing on LED TVs. I personally don’t like it.
I’ve only been able to connect one of my HDMI cables to the TCL – the other two are being very stubborn. I expect I’ll need to get new HDMI cables & hope they fit. Not sure if it’s the cables or the TCL, but the same cables fit in my old plasma just fine.
One saving grace for the TCL is the Roku smart TV interface. That is very slick. But…that can be had separately should I decide to return the TV.
Overall, I expected a much better TV for $600. Especially now with Black Friday deals on the horizon. I still have a week+ to return the TCL if I decide.
Your mileage may vary – but compared to my old plasma (and to my DLP TV in the basement!), the TCL LED 4k just doesn’t quite stack up for me.

Can't beat the picture quality for the price. I looked up reviews on several sites (leveraged RTINGS the most). I considered the various pros/cons of each TV within my price range and a bit beyond to see if there would be a big jump if I spent a bit more. The only TV that came close without spending a ton more was the Sony X900E but considering the very few areas where the Sony outperformed the TCL it did not benefit me very much especially considering the Sony was $200 more and 6 inches smaller.

Great smart features, but poor picture quality

I need to preface this review by saying that my picture experience is based on apartment living and Direct TV signal. I think that's important to know. With that said I have purchased a TCL 605 last year after such great reviews. The features of the overall TV were awesome! Why Best Buy sells the model without the better remote is a mystery to me. The problem was with the dirty screen picture and vertical bands. It looked like flashlights shining from the top. I used every adjustment, but could not clear up the picture issues. Fast forward to last week.
I once again heard so many great reviews and thought I would try this years model the 615. Once again, the remote issue is a mystery. They should re-think distributing the lower level version through Best Buy. I was hopeful of an upgrade to the chassis. Instead, my picture had the same issue. I did not have the same issue with the Hisense H9 plus nor the Vizio P55 F1, which which in the end, provided the best overall value. The colors of the TCL were amazing, the smart features are head shoulders the best, the remote was easy to use and the TV had an amazing picture when streaming. It's too bad when paired with Direct TV, the picture was such a disappointment. If you have cut the cord, this tv should be a top choice.

Great TV. I am not one that would utilize all options probably available on this tv. Merely wanted cable TV, DVD player. Easy to set up and comes with quick start up booklet. Plus, tv walks you thru the steps. Absolutely no problem with bands that others have mentioned. Slight and I mean slight shadow in the corners but only noticeable when background is white. They are about the size of a dime and if '10' is the brightest...they are about a 9. Would not even have noticed if others on here hadn't mentioned it. Had one quick, easy to answer question and called the help line and immediately received correct procedure to accomplish what I wanted to. Great, vibrant picture and sound is acceptable. Wired and wireless hookup available. Access available for Netflix, pandora, hulu, Roku, Sling and others...some of which you pay for.
Long instruction manual available at link provided. Better than other 55 inch TVs? No clue. Picture at the store was better than others on display. Only had about a week but quite pleased with the purchase. Suggest watching the short video clips provided on Best Buy site reviewing unpacking, etc. Would not hesitate at this point to buy again but only have had it for short time.

This TV looks great. Picture quality is terrific and can quickly be adjusted for sunlit room or dark at night. ROKU interface works like a charm. For the price, it is an amazing value.
Now the cons that are well documented by others online:
-- the ARC handshake sometimes has issues and does not connect to my Cisco Xfinity box (passing through Yamaha receiver). Lots of others have had this random issue. The solution is to reboot the cable box and wait for the box to start again. ("Connecting to your X1 experience"). This happens to me about twice a week. No pattern or solution. Device manufacturers (like Comcast) blame TCL and TCL/ROKU blames the device manufacturers. If you buy this TV and wish to use ARC, expect it to happen to you.
-- TV randomly shuts down. Once in a while, it just turns black and is off. Not a power down as if you turned it off (when you turn the set off it says "Powering Down" and takes a few seconds.) TV just stops working. Press the power button and it turns back on as if nothing is wrong. Again, lots of people have the same issue and no real solution can be found online. Happens to me about three times a month and I live with it. Would be nice if TCL or ROKU fixed this in a software update.
So, for me, this is a good TV with a few issues that I'm willing to live with for the quality of the picture and the value.

I live in Phoenix, AZ. Needed a TV for the patio to watch sports and movies. Given the climate, I wanted something affordable as the heat and dust can wreak havoc on electronics. But I also wanted a good, quality unit. Purchased in November 2018. The TV has performed exceptionally well regardless of price. The panel is fantastic, the colors are vibrant, and the black levels are excellent for an LCD TV. I'm also fortunate in that I apparently won the panel lottery. No vertical banding and very little dirty screen effect (only noticeable on a brief white background). It's worth it to dive into the screen settings and adjusting it to one's preferences. The Roku OS is easy to use. TV content is streamed (YouTube TV, MLB, and ESPN apps) in addition to some Netflix. All are displayed cleanly and faithfully. Sound is average but meets my needs. At this price point, I cannot say enough good things about this TV.

I actually bought the 55R617 model, whereas the BB model is the 55R615. The differences between the televisions themselves is nothing, the 617 comes with a wireless remote with voice control, while the 615 model comes with a standard IR remote.
That said, the panel is amazing. Even when off, the minimalist metal finish of the TV frame is attractive. When turned on, the bright colors, especially in HDR10/Dolby really pop on screen, while the 96-zone dimming behind the screen keeps dark shadows BLACK, instead of grey, which is a testament to the high native contrast ratio for this television.
Sure, it may not look as amazing as a OLED or QLED television, but it is also a fraction of the price. I vetted several televisions out for over a week, and I cannot find any other television that has this good looking of a screen at this price point. I would highly recommend purchasing this to anyone in the market for this size of television. It's worth every penny.

Like many shoppers I did a lot of research on my new TV. I read tons of reviews, both professional and owner. I visited Best Buy many times to compare them in person, and after a few months "pulled the trigger" on the TCL 55R615. I love it! Everything about it is "5 Star" except the leg configuration. I really don't understand the need to have the legs splayed so far apart. In the end I bought a TV stand from Best Buy that the TV hangs from, so that wasn't a big deal. But the picture quality is excellent. The ROKU OS is excellent and easy to use. The remote is also really cool. This TV should have anything anybody would want in a modern set. And of course the price is excellent as well when compared to it's competition. One thing though; at least in the Best Buy near me, the TV was hung high and had a very non-impressive generic demo playing on it. If you looked at the Sony, Samsung, LG, demos, their TVs looked more impressive in the showroom. But, when you get the TCL home and turn it on, Wow!

Before review, I do have a problem linking this as an extended monitor with a late 2014 Mac Mini. There is no problem with the main monitor, but mirroring on the TCL is intermittent, works at times but not at others. I notice others have reported similar problems. Given that, this is the best set I have ever had. The previous set was one of the first 4k sets from LG. Blue shading was emerging from one corner and beginning in the middle. While it was on a service contract, the store where I had purchased it had gone bankrupt. After reading reviews on several sets, I opted for this at Best Buy over a Qled set from Amazon, and added the Geek Squad 5 year warranty. Hopefully Bestbuy will remain in business. My experience with this set is much the same as others. Excellent picture, good color, deep blacks, even in a bright room. I do notice some shading in the corners and in parallel bars at times, as others have reported, but it is normally not noticeable. Given that, it is still the best value. Hopefully it will be more reliable that the LG but the service contract gives peace of mind. I was pleased that Bestbuy did a rebate when the price dropped less than two weeks later.

Have now owned the TCL 55" for 2 months. Overall the picture is stunning. The out of the box settings were too red and I had to tone those down. It should be noted that there is some motion blur pixelation, especially when watching sports. I would have preferred to buy the Amazon version and get the voice control remote but I bought the extra 2 years Best Buy warranty for the peace of mind because of the many reported quality control issues. I haven't really tried its speakers but it pairs well with my Samsung soundbar and subwoofer. The Roku interface works well. There is some glare and reflection when the room is bright. At the end of the day I paid close to $700 with the extra warranty and tax and I think that represents decent value. My previous TV was 46" so this seems quite large in comparison and we sit fairly close so for me 55" is a perfect size.
