Great TV for a Great Price

Best 55" value with an amazing picture.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. My parents may be able to drop $3000+ on a new TV every several years, but I’m on a budget. I’m in college and my fiancé works fulltime. We’ve had our last TV (a 50” Vizio) since 2014, but it was struck by lightning in 2016. We were lucky to only lose functioning on one of the HDMI inputs. It seems that the main board gave out last week, but I’ll have to replace it to know for sure. In the meantime, we decided to replace the TV and hopefully defray the cost with the sale of the fixed old one. In any case, research was required. I spent at least 17-20 hours researching budget 55-inch 4k TVs. That includes going to Costco, Best Buy , Target , and even a friend’s house. My price range, which was the primary concern, was between $400 - $600. The easy pick was the TCL 55s405 for less than $400. Other standout considerations that are $400+ included the Samsung mu6300, mu6290 and 55” 7000 series, the LG 55uj6300, and the Vizio M55-e0 among many others. After trying to find more than one source for a TCL p607 I came across the r615/617. After studying it for a while I decided it was worth a go. I’m so glad I did as the picture is absolutely stunning. My father has a $3000+ Sony and if his picture is a 9/10 then this r615 is a solid 7.5/10. It really is that good. The HDR is as good as TVs costing twice as much or more. The one thing that I couldn’t test was the gaming aspect. When I started up Mad Max on my PS4 I was floored. I’m not exaggerating when I say that I was speechless for a bit. My expectations were quite high, yet they were still exceeded, especially when streaming 4K HDR content on Netflix and YouTube. The brightness is well above average and the motion blur handling is outstanding for this price point. Those were big two concerns with a largely untested/reviewed TV. I enjoy watching sports and gaming so those are major bonuses. The contrast is great, and the blacks are inky and crisp. We do most of our viewing at night with streaming services, so it seems custom built for that purpose. When I put on some 4k HDR content my fiancé (who isn’t interested in most things tech) just started smiling. The bottom line is that this picture will thoroughly impress almost everyone who sees it. We already have 2 Rokus but the native app with this TV is just as good as our streaming stick+. The only thing negative might be the viewing angle. I genuinely see no problem with it as one must be almost 65 degrees from straight on to notice any egregious difference. However, this is pretty standard for all VA TVs in this range. So those wanting a terrific wide-angle view need to be prepared to shell out hundreds more while giving up a great deal in other areas. (See IPS vs VA) Some others have mentioned vertical banding, but my TV has no such issues. I could throw a lot of words at you such as color gamut, clouding, and black frame insertion, but does that matter? It’s the day to day picture quality that matters right? If one is looking for a near flawless TV for under $1000 it doesn’t exist. Instead, save up your money and get a top end OLED. However, you still may not be happy with every aspect of it. I say this because if minor issues or missing features bother you that much you won’t be happy with anything less than a high-end OLED. Well I’m glad I can sincerely say that this TCL 55”TV is easily the best value for under $1000, and its picture quality, HDR, and other features either matches or beats any 55”TV under $1000. So, at $600 this TV is a steal of a deal. There are only maybe one or two 55’ TVs under $1000(more than $600) with better picture quality but it’s a negligible difference to 95% of people. If you want a rich, bright, and lifelike picture with outstanding color then this is your TV. For what one gets at the $600 price this TCL 55” TV is an easy choice. Con Viewing angle for some??? Pro Superb picture Outstanding HDR output Remarkable motion handling Contrast and brightness Astonishingly true and brilliant colors Amazing value
