    Good Value TV

Overall this tv is great value for the money. I won’t go into details with specs or features as all of that is readily available in the product details. This review is going to consist of a list of the primary pros and cons of the tv as I see it. Simple and hopefully useful. Pros: 1. Fantastic color accuracy. Out of the box it’s pretty good, but after calibration it’s very accurate. One of the best I’ve seen. 2. Black levels. Nice deep inky blacks. 3. Good brightness for the price range. Especially useful for the HDR. 4. Design. The brushed metal case is quite attractive. Cons: 1. Off angle viewing. Get off center and contrast drops fast. 2. Gray uniformity. The corners of the set particularly are a bit darker than the rest of the screen. Not very noticeable if you’re watching movies with an aspect ratio with black bars on top and bottom. 3. Motion. Like all led tvs there are some issues with motion and judder. Just the nature of the beast. Most of the other features of the tv I would list as pretty average for the price. I am happy with the tv and would recommend it. Especially for the money and with the caveats I listed in the cons section.

Picture is great; build & motion handling subpar

This is my first HDR TV, and it doesn't disappoint from a picture quality perspective. The range of color is impressive, provided you're working with an HDR signal. Even non-HDR content looks good, though, thanks to the number of local dimming zones. Where this TV failed for me, however, is in quality control and motion handling. I see a moderate level of vertical banding and dirty screen effect (google those before buying if you don't know what they are). Those are annoying, but only really noticeable if you're looking for them. What really turns me off is motion. I watch a lot of sports, and the frequent camera panning really strains me eyes in a very short time. Even movies and TV become annoying to watch, especially if there are a lot of pans. I've tried all combinations of post-processing settings on the TV, but I can't get it dialed in to provide a comfortable viewing experience. If I had done my homework and known I only had 15 days to return the set, I probably would have. My advice to prospective buyers is to see it in action before you buy, and make sure it's returnable, in case your experience resembles mine.

    Jaw Dropping Picture Quality

This is my second TCL TV and my third 4k TV overall. My first was a Sony XBR-65X850C purchased in 2015 for the family room. My second was a TCL 50S425 for our master bedroom. This 55R615 6 series went into the loft to replace a ten year old Samsung Plasma. Since this is my second Roku TV set up was simple and straight forward. Once I got everything squared away I went through the streaming channels and some 4k content. Honestly, I was not expecting much as this is suppose to be a "budget" TV. What I witnessed was jaw dropping picture quality from this TV. Colors are brilliant. Flesh tones are superb. Blacks are beyond black. Build quality is also first rate. Metal frame and legs, no plastic. This TCL TV definitely rivals or does better than my Sony 4K. I would place the TCL on my short list to eventually replace my aging Sony when the time comes.

    OUTSTANDING TV for the money

I first heard about this TV from an online review. I was unfamiliar with the company, but some researched showed that they were not new to the TV mfg. business. My budget is limited, so it seemed to be the answer to a prayer. My current Panasonic plasma, 11 years old, was giving up the ghost. Any time a white screen showed up, it wasn't white, but all types of light colors. It made me moan each time. I thought plasmas weren't supposed to get burn in...but it did. So I convinced my wife and finance manager it was time and this was the tv. So I waited for May 1. After I picked up the TV, I had to wait a week for a new TV stand to arrive due to the 48" leg spread. That week was torture. At least I had the unit as it was selling out everywhere. I finally got everything assembled and set up the TV. Made a couple of recommended setting changes and started watching. WOW! I was very, very impressed. The blacks were very deep (a requirement of mine...hence the plasma) and the skin tones (another issue of mine) were excellent. Moving from 1080 to 4K took some getting used to...my wife said that TV shows all looked like soap operas...she was right. The difference was stunning. And I'm talking normal HD broadcast content...not 4K. I have ZERO complaints about this TV. It is an exceptional buy with an outstanding picture for a reasonable price. It's not OLED, but it is close enough for the price difference. Do yourself a favor...give this TV your serious consideration and get in line....EVERYONE seems to want this TV.

This is my 3rd set in 8 days. The banding and shadowing in the corners are real. The display model showcased the same weaknesses. I exchanged the first set hoping to get a set with a better panel. The second set's panel was moderately improved from the first set, and I decided to let good enough alone, but it did not end there. The 2nd set kept shutting off on its own. I contacted TCL customer service and they had me do a few things to no avail. Rather than turn in a warranty claim I returned the set to Best Buy for a 3rd try. I didn't throw in the towel because the picture itself is very good at this price point. This is my first time with Roku and it is wonderful. In the audio section "speech" can be selected which works very well with my hearing shortcomings. I still have some banding, some corner shadowing, but very good imagery.

So, I read all reviews about this tv prior to purchase. Ratings from Professional reviewers were all great for the cost of this 4k powerhouse. I do enjoy my 2018 tcl 6 series. I am bummed about the vertical banding. It took me a couple days to see it but in tan, white or some bright blue backgrounds it is very apparent. Most times the image distortion, I'll call it, is brief and doesn't ruin my experience. Is it a deal breaker... No, but it does deserve the 4 star rating. This TV is overall stunning and tcl is on the fast track to a top of the line company. For 600 bucks I definately have a 900 dollar TV. TV prior to internet connect and upgrade is in my opinion was better, angle views were amazing and I saw no banding issues. All my complaints are post software update it seams. Tcl pay attention here. I may be wrong and hope I am. I do love my new tcl

Good picture, but a bit bright for a dark room

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Purchased this after watching the Night Battle on Game of Thrones and realizing how bad my old bedroom TV was in dark scenes. This looked like a great value and with the zone backlighting, just what I needed for those darker scenes. In a dark room, the blacks in the scene fall away into the wall and are 100% black. Crazy. However, with zone backlighting comes it own issues.....my TV has on several occasions just started to randomly flicker throughout the zones. Only unplugging the TV for a while would fix the issue. Sometimes the TV would struggle to turn back on at all. Therefore, after experiencing this issue repeatedly in only 2 weeks of ownership, it's getting swapped out. Hopefully the next one will work better. The only other issue we have with this TV is that in a bedroom, it's rather bright...even after turning the backlight down to the lowest setting and also setting the TV to "Darkest" mode. It's still incredibly bright in a bedroom. I'm sure this would be great in a family room...but question the choice for our application. Perhaps this is also an issue with my first set (since it's having backlight issues) but I tend to think it's just the nature of the TV. We will find out tomorrow when the replacement arrives.

I corroborate reviews elsewhere. The picture is awesome. Detailed and rich dark hues. Roku ease of use can't be beat. If using the TV primarily for gaming, you might want to consider the pricier Samsung NU8000 as it's refresh rate is twice this beauty (my KD ratio in Call of Duty has dropped since using the TCL) but film buffs can confidently stop their sub-$1k TV search here.

Great Picture and Easy User Interface but Glitchy

I've had this TV for almost 5 years and the picture is still great; there is zero indication of any dead pixels or other issues affecting video. That said, I have experienced a substantial amount of software issues. For a while the TV was getting stuck while loading the home screen, which required me to unplug the unit and restart; this issue went away after a software update. For the last few months we've been dealing with an audio delay about a half second behind the video; this happens on all streaming services... maybe it will resolve after another update. In all, I paid considerably less than I would have spent on a Toshiba, Samsung, or Sony and I got a pretty decent TV that, despite some minor issues, is holding up pretty well.

    A Little Leary

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

2 Stars mostly so you read this. Do I recommend this TV? YES, but read on. Picture: Fantastic out of the box. Even better when calibrating. Cannot beat the feature set for the price. Read any review from CNET, Rtings, etc. Looking at the high end models of LG, Samsung, Sony to get the same specs at two to three times the price. Vizio 2018 P series is closest competitor at about $200 more. Roku: I always recommend this platform, been using it for years, keeps getting better, Have/had both the Roku Player and Roku TV's from TCL and Insignia. The User Interface gets a bad rap for lack of visual appeal, which is true, but it is simple and it works. Samsung and an LG could learn something, their UI's are pretty ridiculous. Sound: About as good as it gets with flat screen tv's without having dedicated soundbars built in. Definitely have heard worse, if using Normal setting and bass was just a tad deeper, it would be fine. Using Big Bass or Theater setting for most listening works best. However, I do use a Samsung Soundbar via Optical cable. Something I did learn though is that this set does not have DTS pass through, so if wanting true surround sound from input sources like a blu-ray player or cable/sat box, then it has to be ran through a receiver or soundbar. Why only 2 stars? This is my 2nd Roku TV by TCL, the other is a 32" from a few years ago. Like any device that has an OS it can have issues and if great enough it will render the TV useless. No Smart TV is immune from this, however, Roku is its own brand and partners with manufactures to load its Smart OS on its TV's. It is like Android, its owned by Google and works with many manufacturers Samsung, LG, Sony, etc to build smartphones. The hardware is controlled by the manufacturer the software by Google, in this case we are talking about TCL is hardware and Roku is the software. I will admit I do not know how closely Roku works with manufactures on the hardware in their tv and have not been able to find that information. And again there is no guarantee that going with a Samsung that uses its own Tizen OS and LG that uses its own WebOS that issues won't abound and render a tv useless, but given the fact those manufacturers have control over hardware and software (like Apple) a fix can be handled quicker (and in theory, should be). The first few days I was also having issues with buffering with streaming, especially with Amazon Video. But I switched out my wifi router and so far I have not seemed to have any buffering issues. It was only a 4 year old router, but I think I just had too many devices connected, I'm not sure there exists a TV Set that is high end with 4K HDR both HDR10 and Dolby Vision that does not have a Smart functionality. Vizio seems to be one that has a minimal Smart Feature setup, but reports says it is a bit slow in response. Gets great reviews for picture quality though. All of my Roku devices I currently have, all have crashed at least once. I can typically make it crash by trying to use the Screen Mirror function, just doesn't seem to work. I think the hardware is just a little too weak for it. But typically it just restarts itself and away I go. With the 55R615 for this review I have experienced one major issue: watching a movie in Vudu it will shut itself off around 30ish minutes in. I have paid enough attention yet, but it seems to be when watching 4K content that has HDR in Dolby Vision. I have reached out to TCL (you cannot get much help from Roku has its not there hardware) and am awaiting a response. This is a pretty big bummer as Vudu offers the best video options for 4K HDR content. Disney's Movies Anywhere does not show the content in the highest setting available, even though that is what was purchased (Last Jedi as an example). So I am not convinced 100% yet that buying into Roku TV, standalone Roky Player, YES. My only reason for not going with the Vizio was reports of bad reliability across production (not that this TCL series didn't have reports as well, but it seems the Vizio is worse in that department) But no matter what tv you go with I still recommend the Roku platform for the shear amount of content available and ease of use. And depending on the version purchased the remote can also control the TV, giving it a near Roku TV experience without the concern of giant paperweight if the OS should fail. I will update my review with continued use. I have 45 day return window so have some time to see what happens and what TCL's response is. You don't have to agree, these are my opinions and experiences.

Great TV for the Price! TCL did it again!

I received my TCL 6 series over the weekend and I have to say, it definitely blew all my expectations out of the water. I replaced my Vizio 4k M series with this new TCL 6 Series and the HDR/Dolby Vision cannot compare. The picture is much clearer and crisp.I played several pieces of various movies to test it out and it looked amazing. Especially Blue Planet II! One thing to keep in mind is that Best Buy's model the R615 compared to the one Amazon/TCL's website is selling the R617, it is the same TV; but with a different remote. Best Buys version is a standard Roku IR remote. The 617's remote has a mic for voice search and other voice commands and also uses RF (radio frequency) to communicate with the TV, so you can point it anywhere. This was a minimal importance to me. The TV is great, the brushed metal design makes it look top of the line, the picture is great and definitely the best you can get for your money on the market as of now!

Don’t look at this TV as a budget!!!!

So I’ve been searching for a TV for a few months, i had in mind these as top tvs some because they where full array and local diming! samsung nu8000 Samsung Q6FN Sony X800E Vizio P series TCL 6 series Now all this tvs are good but the NU8000 and Q6 are similar and they not full array and the smart tv software is no where near Roku, the vizio P software is not that great, also the picture is simillar to TCL but more expensive and the Sony doesn’t have full array and blacks are not soo great, Why TCL 6: Well after reviewing all this tvs for a few months I determined that buying a top brand is not necessarily a better pic, you can debate weather is going to last longer or not but the value you getting with this TV meaning the performance and technology is not comparable! Most tvs in the range of 300-1000 are just not better, not just because of the price but because of how good the picture looks. Cons: I’ve read and seen on YouTube reports of vertical bindings on the screen, well they are accurate yet they not telling you that those bindings are because the TV is full array and have the LEDs mounted vertical in the back of the tv, TCL was not great at the full finish of the leds performance but i am i picky person and the bindings are not bad at a point it will distract you or disappoint you! Of course you can go with the samsung Q6 wich in my opinion is the competition for this tv when it comes to budget or cheaper tvs, but are you really willing to spend 500 more for a tv that also has issues like thicking noises on the back of the tv, (there is no perfect tv for less that $1500) Overall: This is From a guy who loves watching a tv show or movie and play video games with quality pic!! this tv is awesome and you won’t get disappointed, dirty screen, bindings you will find in most if not all led tvs in the price range of 300-1500 so don’t waste your money on a top brand that doesn’t Offer you top technology and get this Tv

    Great Extra Room TV

This TV was supposed to be our bedroom TV and I heard nothing but great things about this TV. I bought it and set it up and it was great for movies and gaming. However I did notice it struggled with sports. The refresh rate is a native 60hz regardless of what marketing scheme they pull on the box. It's 60hz. Bottom line is if your looking for an extra room tv for some late night watching and some gaming this is the best LED on the market. Especially for the price. If you plan on watching sports and using this in your living room I would go with something else. I returned mine after a 6 day trial and decided to go with an LG OLED. Yes the price difference is huge however I am a purist when it comes to tech. Bite the bullet and get the best TV on the market. My OLED is now my living room TV and when guests and family come over they can't stop talking about the picture.

I have an LG OLED, but this tv is about 80% as good for less than half the price. The black levels, color, and HDR/Dolby Vision are outstanding. The Roku interface is easy to use and one of the best smart tv OSes available. Gaming is equally as great. Unfortunately, my screen also suffers from banding and DSE. I contacted TCL and they would not offer any sort of help with the issue at all. They deemed the banding and DSE "normal". It is not normal. I've had lower end tvs from many brands without such issues. Very disappointing for an otherwise great tv. If you get a good panel, consider yourself lucky. It has soured me from the TCL brand if they don't see this as an issue, nor wish to fix it and satisfy their customers.

I've been wanting to upgrade to a 4K tv for a while now and doing my research for the past few months, i kept reading about how the previous TCL models were so good, especially for the price they were charging. I knew the 6 series tvs were coming out and i figured i should wait for those before I made any decision. Comparing them to Sony and Samsung, I thought there'd be no contest but I was wrong. The TCL unit is incredibly close to their comparable sets in picture quality and presentation. I'd still give an edge to the highest end tvs but when factoring a price that could get me 2 or 3 of these tvs, it just didn't make any sense. I can get a new receiver and a new xbox one S, and still be under the cost of the nicer brands. My unit came perfect: no dead pixels and no noticeable vertical banding like some had noticed. Get this tv, you won't be disappointed and your wallet will be happier.

    Great buy with 1 drawback

I would have given this TV a 5 star review if it wasn't for 1 really annoying drawback, the remote that comes with the it! The remote is very disappointing and not nearly as good as the remotes that come with the Roku Ultra and the Roku Premiere Plus streaming boxes which I use on 2 other TVs. While the 65 inch version of the 6 series has a wireless enhanced remote the 55 inch comes with a remote that is very frugal and with IR only which means you have to be very particular when you direct the remote to find the receiving point on the TV. After a while it gets really annoying. If I had known this I would have gotten the 65 inch TV. I have since bought an enhanced TV remote directly from Roku which is $29.99. Otherwise the TV for its price is fantastic, decent sound although I also bought a Yamaha 2070 soundbar and with a very good picture. The setup was a breeze and it took less than 10-15 minutes. I wish there could be one more HDMI port but given the relatively low price it is OK. When I attached the HDMI 3 which is ACR to the soundbar I noticed a delay between when somebody moved their lips talking and when the sound came out of the soundbar. This might be due to the soundbar and not the TV. So I used an optical cable instead of the HDMI. Overall very satisfied and I definitely recommend it. Be prepared to get an enhanced remote from Roku if you want a decent remote..
