This TV is amazing, and it has dedicated modes for different uses: game mode, movie mode, and standard use. It's a wonderful gaming TV that has basically zero lag when the game mode is on, which is very surprising and impressive for how large the TV is. The movie mode is great as well, and it makes the visuals really pop. Heavily recommend.

I'm in the process of building a home theater and needed to get a new TV around 75" in size. I had never heard of TCL before looking at TVs for this project so I was hesitant about going with this brand, but it had all the features I wanted and was priced very competitively, so I thought I'd give it a shot. Before I completely took it out of the box, I wanted to turn it on and make sure there weren't any issues. Everything looked ok at first - but then I noticed a few dim spots towards the bottom of the panel. I circled them in the picture - they're in the same horizontal line, and when you look at the panel at an angle, you can make out a few more, all evenly spaced about 6" apart. I tried contacting TCL through their website, but got error messages when I tried to upload the pictures to show them what was going on. I then tried the email address that they post in response to reviews here and got a response after 2 days from someone stating that they could see the spots in the pictures. They asked for more information and more pictures and I responded with everything they wanted... no reply at all this time. Thankfully I kept all the packaging, re-boxed it, and brought it back to the store. Other than the hassle of having to unbox everything so that they could test it at the store, returning it went smoothly. The people at the store saw exactly what I was talking about when they tested it and didn't seem surprised at all...from the way they were talking to each other, I got the impression that this wasn't the first time they've dealt with defective TCL units.

Bad panel and low brightness for HDR content

Bad panel as the other reviews say. Looks like there is a high chance to get a bad panel on the purchase of 75 inch version. It's basically the same thing you can see in my picture. So be careful with it.
Other than that, the HDR brightness is really low no matter what settings I change (brightness to 100 and no intelligent brightness). Seems like a sofware issue (have updated to the latest system) but it was a deal breaker already.

TCL R646 - Great Value, Very Good TV
|
|

The R646, at it’s sale price, is perhaps the best combination of quality and value for a 75” TV. You get a QLED, mini-LED back light technology panel combined with a rapidly improving Google operating system. With hundreds of local dimming zones the contrast is excellent. Bright, colorful picture.
So is it an excellent TV? Perhaps, but it requires an investment in patience, fine tuning and TCL software updates. First, the panel can be very good, but some inconsistency in manufacturing means you may get one with issues. This should be verified out of the box before mounting on a wall (look at an all gray screen and then an all white screen to see if there are dark zones, spots or wavy shapes). If significant your panel may be a bad one. Mine was very good! It is a VA panel versus an IPS unit. VA panels render high contrast for great crisp sharpness and detail, but have more falloff in picture quality when viewed at angles (IPS better there but has less contrast).
Don’t expect the picture to be great out of the box. Early on I wondered if I should return it; take some time to work with it. Each input will need to be tuned for picture settings (you can find good ones via AVS forum relative to this specific model, page 30). Complete the recommended settings, then further tune to your liking. With the effort you’ll get beautiful renderings, nice blacks with detail, amazing 4K quality. Good SDR quality as well but not as strong processing this as much more expensive models. Works very well with gaming. Picture treatment options are super; for a great price you get full HDR and Dolby Vision/Atmos feeds. Four HDMI inputs, two with 2.1 and the others are 2.0.
Some aren’t as keen on the Google OS, but I like it. Has all the primary apps you love to watch. The remote is handy and minimal (in a good way). It is not backlit.
Expect a few bugs here and there while TCL continues to refine this set via software tweaks. I’ve received the latest update (V083) and it fixed several annoying items. Runs good and smooth for me.
In the end I love my R646. Don’t expect it to look like OLED, nor as good perhaps as the top LED models from Samsung or Sony. I DO believe it beats all the mid-range models for picture quality, albeit with just good results processing some lesser quality SDR feeds. With the right amount of adjustment and patience, this baby will meet or beat TV’s priced much higher.

Saw initial reviews of this TV vs. the older Roku version, and it has better pic, HDMI 2.1 jacks, near OLED level inky blacks, 4k, Mini LED, HDR / Dolby Vision, 120hz, etc... What's not to love... so I ordered it... then I saw some bad reviews about the buggy Google OS software.... Hmmm... I saw TCL had been implementing updates regularly, and I even contacted them, they said they were committed to fixing issues.
Overall, the TV has been great. Picture is amazing, not quite OLED, but also, 1/3 of the price. It's not 100% perfect (I don't have the problems people reported earlier), and a couple of things, digital optical out makes a screech sound if Quick ON is turned off (so Quick on on, remedied that)... Otherwise working great, wifi streaming 4k works well (I had old fire stick / Chromecast dongles that would sometime buffer, no buffering with TCL TV).
75 Inch Mini LED Quantom Dot 4k HDR / Dolby Vision and more for $1300? I'm glad I bought it. Bought BB 5 year warranty, by then, OLED & QD OLED will be cheaper and maybe consider them at the time.
Bottom line... is it an OLED? No, but close enough. You would notice the difference for sure, if side by side, but is that worth another $2500 to you? It wasn't for me....
Thanks TCL for an amazing and affordable big screen TV :)

I purchased this tv as a replacement for an old Vizio LED tv that finally went out on me after 7-8 years. After doing quite a bit of research online, I chose this set for what I thought would a good tv (at a great price) albeit not exactly directly comparable to some premium competitors or OLEDs.
Pros:
- It's a nice looking tv. A bit bulkier than some of it's peers, but it looks nice (ours is mounted).
- eARC works well. The tv syncs with our Sony AVR and controls the AVR with very little setup.
- Picture brightness. It's a great looking picture in a bright room, especially with bright scenes. Watching in the evenings, there are occasionally bright scenes in dark content where I find myself squinting my eyes it's so bright (even at 50% brightness).
- Google TV. I personally like the Google TV platform better than Roku.
- HDMI 2.1: It plays well with my PS5. 4k, HDR and 120 FPS are all available and seem to run great.
- Price compared to OLED. Price is a huge factor, especially when an OLED this size is at least twice as much.
- Handles reflections well. Our tv is in a room with a few lamps and several windows. While you can occasionally see vague reflections, they are seldom distracting and usually non-existent for most content.
Cons:
- Struggles with darker content. Compared to an older OLED we have in a different room, the TCL simply doesn't manage darker content as well. Very dark scenes either feel a bit washed out (grey) or too dark. I've tried a variety of presets and changing settings, but I can't get it anywhere close to OLED for dark scenes.
- Technical/quality(?) issues: Despite the well-publicized update to the OS, we still have some quality issues we're dealing with including some "flashes" where it seems the screen goes white for a split second. It's very quick--to the extent that I thought I might simply be blinking--but my wife has confirmed that she sees the flashes as well. It's hard to explain, but it's quite distracting when it happens. Also, for the first few days, the tv would turn itself off and not allow itself to be turned on unless I unplugged it and plugged it back in. This hasn't happened in more than a week, so perhaps some update fixed the issue behind the scenes.
- Stuttering/judder. This one is also hard to explain but very distracting. When watching content, especially when a character is talking but further away from the camera (say where you see them from the waist-up), the video gets a bit choppy. After about 2 seconds, it smooths out, but gets choppy again when a similar scene comes up. I have not been able to isolate the issue and wonder if it could be a processing problem or even an issue with the streaming apps. Unfortunately, this is a pretty common issue. Again, despite trying a variety of settings, nothing seems to resolve this stuttering.
- Support: When we encountered these issues above, I reached out to support, hoping that settings or an upcoming update could fix them. They asked for a few details and a few screenshots. Again, I was hopeful that the issues I was running into were software related and fixable with a future patch. However, despite being quick to respond (which is appreciated) they neither confirmed or denied that software could be the cause or provided potential solutions other than to reset the tv (which I have tried with no success). When I stated that I was considering returning the tv if these were not fixable issues, they simply said they understood if I wanted to return it. It's hard to say whether the issues I'm encountering are quality issues with my set, or issues with the series/line as a whole. Support certainly didn't help in this regard.
In the end, it's a good tv but certainly seems to fall short of competing tvs from other manufacturers, and isn't really close to OLED picture quality. It's much cheaper than these options and does have a good picture, so it has a place in the market and may be a great set for some; but it's hard to give it an excellent rating when experiencing the issues we're running into and little help from the support team.

The picture on this TV is really phenomenal for the price. The blacks are very true and the colors vivid. The software that runs the TV is somewhat quirky and occasionally the TV will switch off for a second and then turn back on if I am using the HDMI to play Xbox. I don’t know why it does this but it’s not a huge deal but removing a star for technology issues. Other than that, extremely happy.

The screen is amazing. Very, very bright which means it handles HDR very well. As a TV it's clearly five stars! The fact that it has Dolby Vision IQ and HDR 10+ plus HDMI 2.1 and 4K 120Hz mean it is good to go for the foreseeable future.
As a Smart TV not so much. First, I have both a Chromecast by Google TV and Nvidia Shield. Compared to them this Google TV O/S is painfully slow. It is so unresponsive you will frequently overclick the remote and end up on the wrong icon. Also it takes about a minute for ARC to connect to my receiver and occasionally it doesn't connect at all. Like my Google phone it needs a restart or unplugged and restarted probably once a week. I needed to turn off all the "intelligent" picture settings or I would find my picture setting on low power or vivid. Best just to leave it on Smart HDR. I can only hope Google TV updates speed things up. The TV has a lot of memory so that isn't the issue. As mentioned by others the volume control is a mess. The workaround is just to click it in increments.

The image quality on this TV is pretty good. The mini-LED makes local dimming much better. Not quite OLED quality, but much better than older TV's.
There are lots of image settings to play around with and fine tune to look it's best in your environment, as well as preset modes, if you don't want to fine tune it.
4k 120hz is very nice if you have something like an Xbox Series X or Playstation 5. Otherwise, this won't really mean anything to you. It does only have a single 4k 120hz port though, so if you have multiple devices that support that, this won't work, or you'll have to choose one.
The HDMI eARC has been finicky since day 1. Sometimes it works perfectly. Sometimes it kinda works (mute works but not volume), and other times it doesn't work at all. SPDIF works just fine to pass audio to a soundbar or receiver, but you don't have control over SPDIF like you do with eARC. The built-in speakers are decent, but no where near what you want to listen to when watching a 75" TV.
The only other complaint I have about this TV is the powersaving mode. I have it set for quick startup. Ie, it doesn't completely shutdown when you turn it off, it just goes to sleep, like a computer (since it really is one). When I turn the TV off, theres an audible 'click' noise, and then every once in a while, while the TV is off, I hear this same 'click'. It's annoying if the house is quiet, because it's loud enough that you can hear it from a good distance away.
On a nerdier note. I have debug enabled, so I can use the HomeAssistant ADB integration to control the TV, but the TV constantly switches from "unavailable" to "off" and back again, all day, over and over again. This causes the integration to fail in HomeAssistant.
This runs GoogleTV. Not Roku, not AndroidTV. While it does a decent job of aggregating all of your content on the homescreen and search function, it's not the smoothest experience. I think it would benefit from a faster CPU and/or more RAM for the system that runs the OS.
Finally, this thing is HEFTY. The box for it was massive, and the TV itself is not thin by any stretch of the imagination. It stands out a good bit from the wall. If you're looking for something to flush mount because of space, this is not the droid you're looking for. Of course, the ultra thin TV's run a premium price compared to this (not that this is a cheap TV either).
Overall, it's a good TV, but I do wish I had been more patient and saved a little longer for a Samsung or LG of the same size. If that's not an option for you, this will be a good TV. Most content looks very good. It just depends on the content.

2 years Later!! This TV has far beat my Expectations especially since TCL is a newer brand vs Sony, Samsung, LG etc.
Processor is fast in this one and there is no menu lag. Every once in awhile it will but just let it catch up.
Could be internet or cache full.
Sound is fair but I use Sound bar!
Black levels are great and the brightness is excellent.
I have a bright room and have to keep it turned down some. Only hassle as with most tvs light fixture glare in background. Overall 4.9 out 5
