TCL 85" 4K TV Review: Big and Bold, with Some Room

So, I got my hands on the TCL 85" 4K TV, and let me tell you, it's a real showstopper. This beast of a TV has some impressive features, but it's not without its quirks. Let's talk about the good stuff first. The picture quality is something else. The colors are so vibrant, and the blacks are deep. With its crazy brightness and local contrast, everything looks super lifelike. Plus, the motion handling is smooth once you make a few adjustments. I tinkered around with the settings, changed Dolby Vision IQ to Dolby Vision Bright, which opened up the settings to tweak the motion (changed motion clarity to 0 and dejudder to 1). It made a massive difference, especially during fast-paced scenes where the processing was introducing motion artifacts. Now, the sound coming out of the built-in speakers is surprisingly good. It's decent enough for everyday watching, but if you want to really crank up the volume and get the full effect, I'd recommend getting a soundbar or a proper audio setup. One thing that blew my mind is the size of this thing. I mean, it's huge! The 85" screen is way bigger than I expected, like 28% more screen area than a 75" TV. It's like having a mini cinema in my living room. Went down the home theater rabbit hole and discovered something called "viewing angle". Long story short: I found that sitting about 9-10 feet away from the TV puts me right at the THX recommended viewing angle for perfect immersion. It feels like putting yourself in the action and gets you that cinema-like feel right at home. -- But, let's be real here, not everything is perfect. The TV's Android interface can be a bit sluggish. It's not a deal-breaker, but sometimes I wish it would be a bit snappier. And fair warning, this TV weighs over 100 lbs! Trust me, you'll need a helping hand to set it up or consider paying for the setup service (not necessarily a con, but something to keep in mind) Out of the box, I noticed some weird motion artifacts, but thankfully, with a little tinkering, I managed to get rid of most of them. Then noticed the TV's out of box settings are producing "black crush" where the dark scenes lose some details. I think there's a way to fix it through the settings, but I haven't dug into that yet. Lastly, it's a bummer that there are only two HDMI 2.1 ports. It's manageable, though, because the ARC port is on one of the HDMI 2.0 ports, so at least the Soundbar won't hog that one. -- TL,DR - The TCL 85" 4K TV is a big, bold, and visually stunning television. It's got its quirks, like the slow interface and a few adjustments needed out of the box, but considering its price, it's impossible to beat (seriously, nothing else comes close). If you're after a massive screen with great picture quality, this TV is definitely worth considering.

Coming from an LG OLED I was concerned... But

Im coming from an LG C9 65" OLED. I wanted something bigger but the 83" OLED by LG is way out of my budget. I saw this TV listed for $1899 (then got it for only $1299 during a black Friday deal!) and ive got to say; im happy. The black levels of an OLED are VERY comparable. Im a big TV guy, i watch reviews on Youtube of TVs i dont even have. I watch CES every year just to keep up with the new stuff. So im very particular about my televisions. I can't stand watching TVs with subtitles and having the bloom around the subtitles, that is not a problem with this TV. The brightness out shines OLEDs by a mile. Brightness was never really a big concern of mine because I'm in a dark room most the time. However watching HDR content truly does make the movie watching experience better. Colors are better on an OLED but are very comparable to this mini LED. Here's what I don't like about this TCLQM 850G; it's extremely heavy. I work in construction so I've got some muscle to put it together myself but there is a couple times I swear I was going to drop it. Do not put this together by yourself, we are talking about nearly a hundred pounds and nowhere to grab on to. The next thing I don't like about this TV is the viewing angles. You remember that bloom I was talking about? You start to see it on this TV at an angle. When you compare it to an OLED there are no problems with viewing angles. Next thing I don't live about this TV is when watching football sometimes there's a little bit of ghosting. It's extremely light, and I have heard that it is now fixed with the firmware update that just came out January of 2025. Overall give this TV a 9 out of 10. If you're looking for a TV that has OLED qualities at of size 85 in and under $1,800, buy this. Buy it now. If you find a better deal for the Hisense U8K, thats a good TV aswell sameish price. Lastly I will say I did have to reach out to TCL customer service for a warranty repair that went flawlessly. I had an issue with my power supply giving out. It was giving a very high pitch noise like a high-pitched whine. Super easy fix took the repairman maybe 45 minutes to fix.

All I can say is WOW! I have a 77 inch Sony A80J Oled and the Qm8 looks just like a freaking oled. I havnt noticed any blooming at all! Even when looking at words or subtitles. It's replacing a Sony x950g 85 inch led tv which the blooming drove me nuts. The tv is in my man cave/ very dark theather room with no light coming in. So i was really looking forward to finally upgrading to a larger size oled, tought bout a projector, but im more into picture quality and can probably only fit at largest a 100 inch screen. I was hoping Sony came out with a new 83 inch and up qd-oled but no luck. Now im considering the lg g3 83" and Sony a80L. Then I somehow hear about the awesome reviews on a 100 inch tcl qm8. Im like hmmm this solves me wanting a projector. But i never in a million years tought i would get a tcl product. I usually only buy the more expensive Sony or Lg. Well once the price finally came out for 100 inch qm8 i was like hmmmm i don't think i can do 10k on a tv. Then my wallet started talking even more saying, "Mannn that $6500 for the g3 and $6k+ for a80L(with geeksquad warranty) is sounding super expensive compared to a new sale price of $2399 for the 85 inch model qm8. Im like hmmm let me try this tv out and save over $4k. And return if i don't like it. Before the tv even arrived i already was like why i even waste my time trying it out. Aint no way a tv costing over 4k less and being a tcl at that is going to look good. Once i first powered the tv on and the setup menu came on my JAWS DROPED! The tv literally looked exactly like my a80j the deep inky blacks no blooming. My mind was blown! I was actually expecting for there to be some blooming around letters atleast. Picture is crystal clear. Now once you first start watching stuff you WILL need to tweak the settings to your liking, i didnt like the out of box settings much at all. My excitement quickly turned to sadness when watching stuff in out of box setting lol. Play around with all the dynamic contrast, local contrast. Ima try to help on settings but im still playing with them and remember my settings are for dark room watching only no other light in room. This tv the only bad thing is you have to change settings for every format you watch, for example, hdr 10, hdr 10+, dolby vision Dolby vision(dark) Color sat-50. Sharpness-50 Contrast- 50. Digital noise-low Local contrast- high. NR-high Blk level- 50. Montion clarity-on with blur and judder reduction at 0. Hdr-10+ Picture mode-Movie. Brightnes-50 color sat-50. Contrast-50 . Blk lvl- 50.. dynamic contrast-low. Blk stretch-off. Local contrast high. Micro contrast-high. Color temp- -4. Tint-50. Color Sat-50.. sharpness- 50. dig noise-medium.. noise reduction-Auto,, gradation clear-low.. motion clarity on clear led motion on. Blur and judder slides 0. Just use those settings to help you get started quick if you have a dark viewing area. Watch first scene of Fubar on netflix to show off its dolby vision dark and check out Citadel first scene on amazon prime to show off its Hdr 10+. Also i dont know how to get the thumbnails in apps to not be so bright and too colorful. Maybe a firmware update will fix it. Otherwise i just ignore it. Def check this tv out if you want to save thousands over the big name oleds. It puts up a great fight. My Sony A80J does edge it out a little. I say the qm8 is 90-95% as good. My wallet loves it wayyy better lollol. I am a new Tcl fan now. Wowww awesome job tcl!!

The last tv I bought was ten years ago, which was a 70" Sony Bravia. I needed another tv for a newly almost completed room in my house, and fully intended to buy another Sony Bravia. But after watching a lot of industry reviews, I decided to wait for the TCL 85" QM8 mini led TV to come out. I have always been a Sony/Samsung guy when it comes to TVs, and have never even considered TCL before. I pulled the trigger after a small number became available at Best Buy. There were only a handful of reviews on their website, but they were all very positive. This is the first TV that I have ever purchased sight unseen. I am a sports guy. I'm not much of a movie watcher, and definitely not a gamer. This tv delivers clear, crisp images with little to no blur on fast moving action. I watched some replays of recent hockey games and was utterly impressed. The colors pop in a way that my old Sony never did. The blacks are amazing, with very little blooming. As others have said, the picture settings need to be adjusted, as the out of the box settings were not great. The room is very bright where it is, which is why I wanted to go with a mini led. The TV gets plenty bright enough to avoid the colors from getting washed out. There is minimal screen glare, and the off angle viewing is pretty good. The on board speakers and subwoofer are average at best. I used the TV for one day before I got my surround sound system hooked up, and I wasn't impressed. I would highly recommend going with surround sound, or a high quality sound bar. So far I'm very happy with my purchase. Great job TCL for producing an impresive TV at a relatively affordable price.

TCL's flagship model immediately impresses out of the box. Definitely one of the brightest TVs out there, and the picture quality in HDR10 is outstanding. Dolby Vision also impresses, but when analyzed using Spears & Munsil's UHD test patterns, there is some clipping of near-black detail (1-3% stimulus) that is not correctable with the user-adjustable parameters. This same issue is present in firmware v273 and v283. A newer firmware, v291, was released that fixes the near-black clipping in Dolby Vision and shows small specular highlights a bit brighter. However, the dimming algorithm doesn't quite match the now-visible detail, causing backlight pulsing that looks like a swimming cloud of gray in areas of low-level detail, as if the backlight zone doesn't have enough precision as it comes out of black and can't decide whether to turn on or off. HDR10 also seems to be affected, though to a lesser extent that only tends to show up with 1% stimulus. While you can tweak that problem away in HDR10, the Dolby Vision problem is uncorrectable with the v291 firmware unless you turn black level down so that it clips 1-3% again. Also, the increase in specular highlights makes the backlight zones more obvious with things like starfield patterns, though this doesn't often present itself in actual content. Bottom line: TCL is SO CLOSE to greatness here. It's a fantastic TV for the price and overall, it's an absolute stunner with HDR content and gaming. If they can sort out some of the issues in future firmware revisions, this could go down as their best TV thus far.

I have always been a Sony OLED fan and never thought I would ever switch to QLED. However, OLED doesn't get bright enough. Especially in a bright room. It was a "no brainer" to consider TCL MQ8! There is a reason this tv won so many awards at CES this year. I was absolutely blown away at the quality of this panel. the colors are extremely vibrant and rich. the 2300 dimming zones on this panel had me thinking it was an OLED! I could not believe how well it handled dark scenes...TCL came swinging hard with the QM8 as a top tier flagship tv. if you're looking for inky black levels, bright nits panel with incredible colors. then look no further. buy this TV!

The TV's picture is excellent! Lots of features easy to set up. The brightness is unbelievable if you like a really bright TV this is the TV for you. Only downside or negative is is advertised with a subwoofer but I can barely hear any difference from what my old Samsung was there really not much difference from what I can hear so don't expect like booming base it's a tiny subwoofer in the back. Also the one glitch I had was when I turned on TV for the first time It really didn't send me through a setup process so I kind of set it up like I would a regular TV and then I shut it off went about my day came back turned it back on and it want to do an auto update which I allowed and the auto update pretty much erased everything done and locked out my Google profile and I had to do a full factory reset on the TV and start again putting it all the passwords to all the different streaming services and setting it up the way I wanted for a second time.

I have multiple new TVs, of different brands with the latest technology. I have always loved Samsung and Sony, but a year ago purchased a 55inch Hisense QLED for the spare bedroom and was shocked at how great the picture quality was! I had done research for a long time about these new “cheap” brands, and the truth is a lot of them are on par or better than TVs from the big name companies. Fast forward to a few months ago when I decided to look for an 85 inch TV for the living room of my new home. I decided I wanted a Mini-LED TV with at least 120hz motion since I was a ton of hockey and super fast moving sports. Anyone knows, this is where an inferior TV will start to suffer in performance… I did months worth of reading and watching reviews about the TCL 8 series mini-Qled and figured I’d try another “budget brand.” I absolutely couldn’t be happier! Especially for the price point!! It handles everything with ease and the only time I see slight issues with the TV is occasionally watching hockey I can notice a small amount of lag in the picture, BUT that depends on who is broadcasting the game. Once the Stanley Cuo Finals went over to ESPN, the lag went completely away, so now I can confirm my suspicions that ESPN’s cameras being the best of the best, broadcast a higher quality signal and my TV keeps up with the action with absolutely zero lag or any other issues. The picture quality is insane! It actually feels like you can reach out and touch whatever is on your screen, being so clear and realistic. Not to mention at 85 inches it feels life size and like you’re completely submerged in the scene or action. My favorite show is reruns of Top Gear and The Grand Tour, and with The Grand Tour, and Amazon’s amazing cameras, I feel like I’m right there in the studio or in the passenger seat of the car with the guys. It’s incredible and I can’t get enough!! In my humble opinion, this is easily the best TV of this size and specifications for the money. I have yet to watch a Sony Mini-LED TV and I’m sure it has mine beat, BUT not sure I’d enjoy it enough to spend 3-4 times the price of my TCL M8 for that small difference in quality. I use mine with the newest Apple TV hooked into 4 HomePod Mini’s for surround sound with great quality but not so loud the neighbors hate me, and it’s perfect. Having said that, the Google TV built into the TV work flawlessly and you definitely do not need anything additional to make this TV great to watch. The built-in speakers are MILES better than my brand new 75inch Samsung I have in the master bedroom, with plenty of low end sound unlike the fore mentioned brand which sounds tinny and hard to hear unless you crank it way up. Long story short, it truly is an amazing TV, and I’d recommend it to anyone. For the price, you absolutely can’t go wrong buying one of these specifications are what you are wanting. I never leave reviews, but I wanted to take the time to help someone to read a review from possibly the most particular person on the face of the earth. Haha

I purchased to replace a Samsung QN90A because the reviews on this TV all speak to it's stellar Brightness and Black Levels...and In this regard it didn't disappoint! The Google TV interface is fast and responsive. For most people maybe this is enough..but many are reviews are not speaking to what are the deal breakers for quality picture enthusiasts! I realize this is a VA panel..but unless you are DEAD CENTER you will see the color wash out even a couple inches off center! Dolby Vision settings are locked down! They have decided to remove the brightness setting in Dolby Vision to make it look like the "dull creators intent". I had to turn the Gamma setting up to get any HDR "POP" out of it which sacrifices that stellar black level! HDR 10 looks incredible with the TVs brightness which is why you want this TV...But you can't turn off Dolby Vision and just watch in HDR and they took away the brightness control in Dolby Vision! Again..need to sit "DEAD CENTER" ...sitting closer to the screen helps ..but if your viewing at a distance you're going to see that picture loose its color fast a few inches left ot right! I contacted TCL with these issues and opened a case with TCL because I was just outside of my return window with BestBuy ( I was still evaluating and tweaking to see if I could "like" this TV ), I just wanted to Return it or get credit for it since they did not have any fixes ( via firmware) or other to resolve the Dolby Vision settings. They sent a few emails and stopped replying! So Im stuck...$1900 for a TV sitting in an extra room unplugged as I put my QN90A back into my theater space. I posted my TCL for sale and can't sell it for even a drastic discount ! Stuck! Sure.. The QM8 is Bright and Vibrant as long as you sit in the sweet spot and crank up the Gamma in Dolby Vision and don't mind raising your Black Levels..maybe you won't mind but I do for my money!

This brand is not one of the name brand tvs, but it has all of the technology of a high end LG and the quality of the picture is absolutely outstanding. The brightness feature blows all of them out of the water, and no glare from any side. Put an led strip on the back of it and just sit back and enjoy “Govee led “

The tv is just as good as any other. I had a lot of problems with the sales team, including thinking I was buying an OLED. Turns out it’s not an OLED but didn’t want to return an 88 inch TV with all the hassles. I am happy I kept the TV for the price. I think it’s just as good as any other one. One problem I had was finding a mount For full motion TV mount. This TV has a different pattern where the bolts go in the back. Had to buy an oversized mount because it’s not a standard 60 x 80, it’s 80 x 80. Ordered an 100x100 bolt pattern on Amazon for less than $100 and it was very sturdy and working good. Overall, very happy with the TV. Glad I didn’t spend more for Samsung or LG. Most of the TV shows or YouTube are not made for the super high-quality. Some of the movies and tv series that do use high-quality look absolutely amazing on this TV after messing with the Settings. Looks real life. Watching classic movies like the movie Titanic that have been digitally remastered experience on the TV quality. This is a good TV. You don’t have to spend the extra money for The more expensive name brands. And I love the remote, although it seemed awkward at first now I’m obsessed.

I couldn't be happier with my purchase. I researched for months. The TCL QM8 is the best balance of quality and value on the market. The colors pop and the blacks are so deep you would swear it was an OLED. This monster has turned my living room into a theater!

I've Enjoyed the TCL 85" QM8 QLED HDR Smart Tv for about 3 weeks (purchased 9/1/2023) I'm still impressed with the realism of the picture & colors every time I watch a show or movie, amazing technology it's like being there almost. I also purchased a JBL 500 Soundbar to go with it., However, I've recently decided to improve the Sound with a 2023 Denon AVR S770H 7.2 Channel Home Theatre Reciever with Klipsch Speakers & 12" Subwoofer. I will update after they have arrived and are installed. I'm expecting the sound upgrade will be as impressive as the TV.

I was teetering between a 100” front projector and a “traditional” tv. Im glad i went with this TCL - the picture is outstanding, and the value is even better. Reference qualtiy theater for less!

Great TV with great options, support for both Dolby Vision and HDR10+. Bought an open box and by far the best TV I have ever owned. Side note this TV is extremely bright!

Researched the best non-OLED TV and this does not disappoint. It was either this or the Hisense U8 and this was on sale during Memorial Day for $200 off the 85”. However, there was a glitch to apply for the Best Buy card and pay for it monthly. So, I went in and showed the manager and she was amazing, offered me the advertised price even though it had passed.
