Often it's the case that a massively embraced “brilliant” movie (or book or play) becomes a victim of overkill. This pretty much is the situation with 2022's THE BATMAN, an overlong (3 HOURS!), grueling exercise in “Gee, ain't we dark and cool!?” And it's dark indeed (cool, meh!) – so much so that even in the 4K edition, it's tough to frequently see what the heck is going on. That said, do you really want to? What is discernible is gritty, rusted, claustrophobic, unpleasant and downright ugly. When did it become the norm to present noirish and/or gothic pics as the cinematic equivalent of solitary in a Third World prison? Has anyone involved EVER seen the sleek beauty of a classic noir...or a Hammer goth? Aside from Matt Reeves' pretentious direction (along with his pretentious script, cowritten with Peter Craig), there are the performances to contend with. Robert Pattinson isn't terrible, but he's totally unmemorable. Zoe Kravitz exhibits some sparks as Selina Kyle, but there's absolutely no chemistry between her and Pattinson. And who told Jeffrey Wright (as James Gordon) to channel Daniel Bruhl's whispery, irritating histrionics from The Alienist (as if that take wasn't annoying enough)? And try to convince me that Colin Farrell isn't trying to become The Movies' upscale Nic Cage? LSS, the picture only comes (vaguely) alive during the last hour. But, for me, it was way too late. That said, there are perks in this new steelbook. The score by Michael Giacchino is quite excellent, and the rarely-commented task of music supervisor is downright spectacular. George Drakoulias is THE BATMAN's unsung hero. So, maybe it's best to simply buy the soundtrack. Truth be told, 15 seconds after this epic ended, I had forgotten all about it.

This movie borrows heavily from Se7en. The cast is great and the cinematography is excellent, however. Despite the three hour run time, it is paced well and doesn't drag (much). I still prefer TDK.
