Woah!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I went into this movie FULLY expecting just some stupid "Bad Boys" type garbage with just mindless shooting and explosions. At the time I knew nothing of the director or writers, but now that I do, I feel foolish for the expectations that I had for this movie. This movie completely knocked me over with how amazing it was. The movie constantly keeps you on the edge of your seat and is incredibly suspencful! This movie is a prime example of Leo DiCaprio's true acting ability. I am a huge fan of him and Matt Damon, so when I heard all of the buzz about this movie from my friends, and learned that they were BOTH in it, I bought it that day, and I was most definitely not let down! This movie had some of the best acting I've ever seen! If you buy this movie, i can almost guarantee that you will love it. I honestly cannot find one thing I didn't like about this movie except part of the end, which I cannot say because it will spoil it. Let me leave it at, "The elevator scene left me unsatisfied with how things played out." BUT, the end TOTALLY made up for it. This movie has an end to it that makes you want to jump up and say "Yes!!" Besides that, this movie is a definitely buy! It has intense language, prettyu good action, a VERY suspencful story with a few twists, and very interesting characters.

Among Scorsese's best
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Although not as good as "Casino," "Goodfellas" or "Taxi Driver," "The Departed" is still a great film from Martin Scorsese. The film is about a criminal (Jack Nicholson) who has a friend working for the police in Boston (Matt Damon). There's also an undercover officer working for the criminal (Leonardo DiCaprio). During the film's two and a half hours, these storylines intersect and make for one excellent film. Mark Wahlberg and Martin Sheen are outstanding as superior officers. The plot twists are natural and engaging. The violence is quick and brutal. The characters are believable -- it's good to see Matt Damon playing a real character who has a personality instead of the boring, soulless Bourne. While big fans of "The Departed" will want the two-disc edition, the single-disc version is sufficient for causal fans. The film has a nice widescreen transfer and the theatrical trailer. Highly recommended.

"I Smell a Rat!" Scorsese's Best!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.First of all, the acting, directing, and just about everything else was state of the art. Jack Nicholson was perfect as Frank Costello, a mob boss who is in charge of the organized crime ring in Boston. Leonardo DiCaprio plays Billy Costigan, an undercover cop who sneaks his way into Costello's gang so he can be an informant for the police department. Meanwhile, Matt Damon plays Colin Sullivan, an informant for Costello's mob who works for the police department, and is on his way to be promoted in the Special Investigations Unit. Both men cross paths, and fall in love with the same woman - a psychologist played by Vera Farmiga from the little-known indie Running Scared. Each man starts to become consumed by their work, and when they are both in danger of being found out, only then do tensions rise, and things get a little out of hand. The performances from the leads are all Oscar-worthy. Great American adaptation of a Foreign Film.

Scorsese's 4th masterpiece
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Scorsese has a streak for having a masterpiece each decade, Taxi Driver in 70's, Raging Bull in 80's, Goodfellas in 90's and now The Departed in the new millenium. He handled this piece of work with masterful techniques. The bad language is no problem, like other reviews here said, after all, a film is suppose to be accurate to what it's portraying, and this is a crime film that has to do with gangsters and moles. Leo is great overall but in some scenes his character is transformed into someone different from the two characters he's already playing (the paranoid cop, and the raging mole). after a while i forget about this because that flaw is layered with the other stars magnificent performances..especially Mark Wahlberg's shoulda-been Oscar winning performance, that with every appearance he makes on screen, makes me laugh. It is definetly a masterpiece, and no, I dont get tired of watching it.

one of the best
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is probably scorseses best film, to which he won best director. The movie is about the irish mob in boston which isn't something many people are aware of. The casting in this film is probably one of the best i have ever seen, you have leonardo dicaprio, mark wahlberg, matt damon, jack nicholsen, martin sheen, and alec baldwin and all of them did absoutely perfect. The movie is based off a triology called Internal Affairs, and this one was based off the second movie in the trilogy so lets just hope they plan on making a prequel and a sequel as well. There is nothing negative about this film even though i am not a fan of the ending. You owe yourself to watch this film, you will not be disappointed.

Great Film
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Everything in this film was developed. We were introduced to each character at the appropriate time and then they were developed. The whole film intertwines with itself at the end when all the cogs fall into place and rat meets rat. When it's all over, and, attempting not to SPOIL anything here, when everyone has avenged or sought revenge on each other, the movie is left empty, which is exactly the point that it is portraying. The emptiness is there because thats all we're left with when its over: nothing. Brilliant. Its not a happy ending nor should it be. It was perfect. Good choice for Oscars.

Favorite Movie of all time!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Departed is my favorite movie of all time. Not only was it directed beautifully, but the acting was fantastic. Leonardo Di Caprio had some of his best acting ever in this movie, it was all very believable. Another good point of this movie was the greusome/ bloody shootouts between Boston's Finnest in the Police Force and the Italian-American Mafia. Jack Nicholson played the Mob-boss Frank Costello and was a very believeable character. After purchasing this movie I watched four times within the next five days! It was that fantastic, in fact I still catch myself looking through my movies and always picking The Departed to watch. BUt make sure that you have a good three hours to watch it because once you start it you won't want to turn it off.

One of my all time favorites!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If you haven't seen this movie, you might as well just go buy it. I purchased this movie on sale for $12.99, and it was so worth it. This was cheaper than when I bought it on DVD. Excellent price, and this movie is in my top 3 movies of all time. Great acting by all the actors, and excellent plot to this movie. The only thing I did not like about this Bluray, was the fact that the disc menu was very basic. Most DVDs have better disc menus than this particular Bluray disc. But, other than that, I am extremely happy with my purchase!

Pleasantly surprised!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'm not a huge movie buff, so I can't tell you if this is 'Leo's' best or not...but I will say this. It's about the only movie released in the last year I'd be tempted to buy and take home! Suspenseful throughout, a good ending, and I thought all the actors did a good job (but I usually don't pick winners when the awards come around...just a fair warning). I thought it'd be good with the names it carries, but it by far surpassed expectation. Genre-wise, I'd put it something between Training Day and 16 Blocks. Great movie, I highly recommend it.

best deal so get it
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.martin scorseses best movie since goodfellas, maybe even better. this is one of my all time favorites, maybe even my favorite. mark wahlberg dilevers the best lines in this movie. leo dicapreo is obviously one of scorseses favorite actors-just look at gangs of new york and the aviator. matt damon is good and jack nickleson is a monster and is really convincing. they all got the whole boston accent down perfect. the story is great, complex, gritty, and and actually makes you care for it and there are a lot of twists as well. overall, this is one of my favorite gang/cop/mafia/crime movies of all time and it definetly diserved the best picture award.

Great Mob Movie
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is one of the best movies of the new millenium. With so many lackluster movies that have been released in the 2000s, this movie stands out as one of the best mob movies ever. Martin Scorsese did an amazing job directing and won his first Oscar for Best Director (He should have won for Goodfellas as well). DiCaprio, Wahlberg, Damon, and Nicholson are fantastic. If you complain about the bad language in this movie like the previous reviewer did, then you are watching the wrong genre of movie. Like all of Scorsese's films, expect a lot of violence and bad language. This is a must see movie.

the departed review
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. When I began watching the departed I had extremely high hopes for the movie( what with the incredible cast) and when I finished I have to say I was not dissapointed. It is in my opinion that Jack Nicholson's portrayel of legendary crime boss Frank Costello was one of his best performances to date, but I guess that is to be expected from an amazing actor such as himself. This all-star cast kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the entire picture, and the ending had me leaving on a high note. For those reasons I give this film a two thumbs up, and strongly recommend it to anyone.

one of my top five movies
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Gunna keep this short and sweet. Didn't love the movie the first time. But, it kept coming on Cinemax and HBO, and I kept watching it. Before I knew it, I was looking at HBO's schedule to see when it was coming on again. Now I own the DVD and I probably watch it once every week or two. The cast could not have been picked any better, especially Ray Winstone as French. This is definitely one of my favorite gangster movies, if not the favorite.

Severely Flawed.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. In my opinion this film is not Scorcese's best, it's far from it. The performances are very good, but sometimes specific things don't work to the plot favors. The whole cellphone thing is somewhat annoying and you have to keep in mind that The Departed is set in the "now" and it doesn't seem like the screenwriter payed much attention to getting it right, especially with changing technology. Overall, the film is good and the dialogue is excellent...but if you want to watch a really good crime/gangster film, stick to GoodFellas--Scorsese's masterpiece.

Riveting
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is wonderfully acted film. Leonardo DiCaprio does a terrific job as Billy. Jack Nicholson is both funny and horrifying as Frank. It captures your attention right from the beginning, and holds it through the last scene. There is a surprise ending. Warning for language: Literally every major scene in this movie uses the "F-Word" repeatedly.

Martin Scorsese at his best
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. One of the best movies I've seen in a long time. This movie will have you at the edge of your seat the entire way. Another great film by Martin Scorsese. The amount of big name actors that are in here is amazing. Leo, Jack, Mark Wahlberg, Alec Baldwin, Matt Damon, Martin Sheen. Definately worth the money, and a great addition to any DVD collection.

Great Purchase
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Departed is a great movie about organized crime in Boston. A story about two cops; one cop working undercover in the organized crime group and the other cop working as an informant for the organized crime group. This film has great action, and many unexpected things happen throughout the film. The special effects are not great but it is not a film where the special effects are important. This is a must buy for any action film fan and for an organized crime film fan.

An instant classic!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Scorsese put together an All-Star cast for this mafia/gangster/cop movie. The story was well written and kept me on the edge of my seat. Just when I thought the movie would become predictable, something unexpected happened. This movie was very enjoyable from start to finish!

Very Good Film
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This movie has it all. Great plot, excellent cast and some of the best camera work ever. I think this movie was very good and even though it is long there are no boring parts. Each of the main cast members did a great job and they all were great together. Highly recommended film. Pephaps the movie of the decade.
