I had some shipping trouble with this but I won't let that get in the way with my overall. Bought 2 special edition copies 1 as gift and one for my Collection. The movie by itself was done very well, Including some very famous actors/tress. The children filled there roles to perfection. The best part of it was how the CGI was used through out the film. The animals (deamons) and others just fit well into reality. I won't talk about the move, but will ask you after the movie to watch and hear the Directors Commentary & Special Disk. It really helps place things in a understanding perspective. The Kids enjoyed it, and as an Adult we can always use a little fantasy in our lives. After the ending we're all pretty much looking fwd to owning the rest of the Golden Compass saga. .

The Golden Compass is an imaginative story. The movie is a beautiful adaptation from book to screen. The acting is right on. Very well cast, especially with Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig. Sam Elliot is a nice surprise and perfect in his role. The polar bears are wonderfully portrayed and come to life on the screen. The story is timeless and appeals to all ages. A great story of quest and growth that should become a classic.

Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig , Sam Elliot , many others . Humans and their daemons . Animals that can speak . Dark battle of science and the control for personal beliefs . A Golden Compass guides you through a maze of adventure and fantasy. Beautiful cinematic scenary. Must see. Although a major blockbuster , it's sequel was opposed by the Church and religious groups .

It's really sad that this movie bombed in the box office, it's really good and the next two books in this trilogy would've made really great movies. If you like fantasy movies then this is a must have.

Love love love this movie, I've watched it over and over again, my kids love it too, it's visually stimulating and a joy to watch every time.

I would recommend this movie to any parent that has kids 5 and over to see is a great movie can't wait for part 2 to see it

I read the original customer review and decided against buying this movie. I should have trusted my instincts and bought it anyway. I loved it! The movie has a wonderful story to it, though it is incomplete, and great visual effects to make it "come to life". I had heard from others and reading the original review, made this movie out to be "evil" with them "killing off God" at the end. This is simply untrue. Don't want to spoil too much of the movie but... This is a fictional FANTASY tale of a parallel world with differences in how things are. In the first lines of the movie says there are many different worlds....some like yours where your souls are on the inside and some like mine...where our souls are on the outside and take other forms....or something like that. The "demon animals" are simply what their world calls their souls. You would not expect words to have the same meaning in a different world...Did none of you watch Lord of the Rings?? And the "girl who does not seem to be disturbed in the end when she helps to kill a great amount of people"....come on...this is the classic story of "good triumphs over evil" and the "people" at the end were created, not real. I was very pleased with this movie except that the end did not finish the story...maybe they are making sequal...but I do intend to buy it.

Philip Pullman is one of the great fantasy writers whose time may have come. The hero of this book is a young girl who must fight for the very souls of the people of her world. This is not a pink spun sugar tale of how wonderful and blissful childhood is. The adults in power turn out to not be the protectors but those who must be defeated if the world is not to lose the essence of their being - their souls which are actualized as their companions in animal form. It is a story that should make anyone watching it take pause and think about the difference between spirituality and the bureaucracy of 'religion'. This is not anti religion but instead speaks against those who would misuse religion to gain power and destroy the soul of religion in doing so.

I originally rented the Golden Compass on a whim. I had seen the preview and thought it looked interesting, with imaginative effects and a stellar cast. I was not disappointed. While some may dismiss the film as an opportunity to take advantage of the popularity of Harry Potter, they would be sorely mistaken. The world of the Golden Compass is vivid and creative, and does justice to the source material. However, be warned that in order to make the film, certain aspects of the book (an excellent, bold series) had to be changed for a wider appeal (and to appease the Catholic church). Unfortunately, it seems that the trilogy will not be completed. Still I would recommend the film for its intriguing story and outstanding effects and acting. The blu-ray transfer is excellent and the added features are fun. My only regret is that the story will not continue in the film medium.
