Just move it feels like it’s heart is in the right place but it just doesn’t know how to translate that into screen. It’s got some decent actors though this guy from euphoria looks Just like Will Smith I think that was probably intentional but also a strange choice

A messy message. Coming in, I wasn’t really expecting much out of this movie based on the trailer alone. I had a very similar negative reaction to the trailer for Blindspotting, but that ended up being one of my favorite movies of the year so far, so I was hoping The Hate U Give would turn out similarly. Unfortunately my fears came true, and although the message for the film is obviously necessary, the execution is quite poor. The movie starts off with some very corny narration that acts as if it’s a dumb children’s movie, and I immediately knew how this film would turn out. My least-favorite aspect of the film is definitely the writing, the dialogue and plot structure and character motivations are all over the place. When something promising is starting to develop or is shown on screen, the film immediately becomes dumb with its characters and lacks essential focus. The only redeemable qualities of the film are some of the performances, particularly Stenberg, Hall, Common, and Mackie, but what they are given does not make their jobs any easier. All of the high school aspects are very cheesy, with all of the characters being so bland and uninteresting, and sometimes even laughable. The concept of the film is interesting, having this innocent teenage girl witness a horrible tragedy right in front of her eyes and having to deal with the aftermath, but the script does not bring out the best of the story’s potential. A lot of the film comes off as an average melodramatic TV film, but this movie has way too large of a budget to be that. I’ve loved many socially-charged films released last year, but unfortunately this isn’t one of them.
