Typically Frustrating Tarantino film...
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. At it's best, this is excellent. Of course, i'm a fan of plays and stories in confined spaces. There's enough tension and wit memorably delivered by the fine performers. The mystery may not sustain the interest in many viewers who prefer a brisker pace. I like the slow pace quite a bit; on the other hand, it makes it easier for the mind to assemble the clues and get ahead of where the movie wants you to be and for some that can lead to some boredom. Is it worth it? To me yes. Still, the pace -- not to mention the epithets -- is arguably over-indulgent and I couldn't begrudge anyone put off by it. Certainly not recommended for those with no patience for vulgarity or violence.

Twisted Western
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It's a good title. Nobody is "the good guy" in Quentin Tarantino's 8th film. Every character has a reason to hate at least half of the other occupants in a snow-bound cabin during a Wyoming winter. Tensions are high almost from the get-go, and they don't let up until the final credits roll. You know right from the beginning that it won't end well for some or all, and it keeps you guessing all the way through. Half the fun is wondering who's going to do what to whom. Tarantino doesn't disappoint because some of it, you won't see coming. Terrific ensemble cast! The only thing that I was disappointed with, were the token extras that were tacked on. I would really have liked to get a little more insight behind-the-scenes. ***Warning*** VERY violent. It isn't called the Hateful Eight for nothing.

Tarantino tackles the western genre
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Great casting, acting, directing, cinematography and editing help to make this another classic in Tarantino's small catalog of films he's directed. What this movie lacks is a compelling story... the characters are over-the-top stereotypes of the genre, but the plot is too thin. Too much hinges on 'the letter' and the plot twists and quirkiness usually found in Tarantino's best films is simply not up to par. All in all, it's still a worthy film and send-up of the western, but most of us have come to expect more from this filmmaker... he's set his own bar very high and doesn't quite get there this time. However, it is still worthy of a place on my shelf alongside the other films he's directed. Recommended.

No QT's best, but better than most others
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.A bad QT movie doesn't exist. Jackie Brown is straightforward and pretty normal for a QT movie, but it's still very enjoyable. Deathproof is not great mostly because it doesn't have enough Stuntman Mike, but it is still pretty decent. That's the worst I can say about Tarantino's filmography. The Hateful Eight is not as good as Pulp Fiction or Kill Bill or Inglorious Bast***s....but it's still dang good entertainment. Take a deep breath, relax and just allow yourself to go along for the 3 hour ride and you will be treated to a pretty intense and fun experience. Not to mention it's gorgeous to look at and the audio is fantastic, along with an Oscar winning score from none other than Ennio Morricone.

Great gang to spend a blizzard with...
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'm a big of QT's films. That said, I feel like he peaked with INGLOURIOUS as far as tight but still funky writing, tense scenes & gorgeous photography. DJANGO was pretty great, but seemed a little self-indulgent even for Q's standards at a few points. And I feel the same about the EIGHT, but for different reasons. Great cast, great premise & amazing gore fx, but the story very often feels like a play more than a movie. Since the derned thing is nearly 3 hours long, there are times when the talk in the room starts to get a little stuffy. The flick is still riddled with great moments (show-stealing Walton Goggins, for example), but it doesn't rank as high as some of QT's earlier work in my book.

Better stage play than movie
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This one really has me conflicted. It may be one of my least favorite Tarantino movies (but still a pretty good movie by anyone else), but it is still staying with me a week or so after seeing it. I think the one of my reservations from loving the movie is it's just too long. This is Tarantino at his most self indulgent (besides perhaps the trivia game in InglouriousB) and may be just too in love with his own work to see it. This is also the most stagey/play-like of his works, usually with all of the (great) dialogue you have some visually amazing sequences as well from Tarantino, but here it's almost all talk. Thankfully it's mostly very good dialogue, but it's all a little too much. Even with Tarantino's usual snappy dialogue, it's the three central performances that stand out: Kurt Russell and especially Samuel L. Jackson and Walton Googins are terrific, really standout performances from all three. Kurt Russell is really grizzled, Samuel L. Jackson gets the major role he so deserves, and Googins (and Tarantino) create such a great character out of such a stock type (re: ignorant hillbilly). I think some of the disappointments I had with The Hateful Eight come out of my own unfulfilled expectations. This was so not the western I was expecting from Tarantino, I think I was wanting a more traditional western archetype story that of course Tarantino would have then turned upside down. Hopefully this will improve on multiple viewings (and again this is far from a bad movie, it's just not the usual home run that directly speaks to me that Tarantino usually seems to make).

Good but not Tarantino's best. It's for fans only.
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The story and plot are good. Set in post civil war era a female fugitive from justice is caught by a law man that is determined to see her hang and collect lucrative bounty set on her head. In order for him to collect the bounty he must take her to the town of Red Rock but a blizzard causes him to take unexpected stop at a well known haberdashery. In this haberdashery is where the plot unfolds as there are other strangers in this haberdashery that may not have the best intentions in mind for the lawman. You will spend two plus hours confined to this haberdashery with eight hateful individuals some of which may have dubious intentions in mind.

A solid and unique Western - its memorable!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This film established Quentin Tarantino as both a Writer and Director of note. For openers, this film is marked with absolutely superb cinematography and its accompanying epic and powerful sound-track sets a unique tone to each scene. It's interesting plot-line keeps you constantly guessing what is coming next, it holds your attention throughout and leads you to an ending that you will not expect. All the actors had invigorating performances and they as well took the advantage of "bringing-out" their characters which materially added to the believability and viewing quality this unique story on screen. A solid Western genre that’s a bit of a detective story - a memorable view!

Not Pulp Fiction great, but really good-4 stars
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Usually for my Blu-ray reviews, I tend to focus on the bonus features and the presentation of the main feature itself. I usually figure most people can read a more critical review of the movie itself elsewhere, however, I do want to make a few comments on The Hateful Eight. One of the criticisms I hear people say about the film is it is not one of Tarantino's best, while I tend to agree it is not one of his best, I feel it should not be viewed upon negatively. Tarantino is one of the few directors who's work should be essential viewing. A good Tarantino film is still better than most films released that year. So I would recommend this film for any Tarantino fan or any film junkie. The film contains the trademark Tarantino dialogue, enhanced by its setting for the majority of the film; amazing cinematography by Robert Richardson (one of the best DP's); an incredible score by Ennio Morricone (need I say more); and an excellent cast, led by Kurt Russell, Samuel L Jackson, and Jennifer Jason Leigh. My main criticism of the blu ray is not of the film, but of the presentation. One of the aspects I was looking forward was the possibility of the 70 mm Roadshow presentation of the film, but unfortunately it is just the mass released version that was in the majority of the of the theaters nationwide. I was also hoping for some more special features on the story of The Hateful Eight and how it became a feature film versus a play, maybe a feature on Morriicone and his work on the film. I was expecting a feature on 70mm but was hoping their would be more to it. I give the film 4 stars but the bonus features and lack of the Roadshow version of the film I give the Blu Ray 2 stars for an average 3 stars. I do assume there will be a second release at some point but I am not entirely sure. Tarantino releases tend to be hit and miss on these type of releases--Grindhouse, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown have been given them but not Kill Bill. So if you want just the film pick this up, if you want the Special Edition wait, but there's no guarantee it's coming.

"Hateful Eight" on Blu-ray light on extras
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The transfer is crisp, the visuals lush, the soundtrack magnificent, but there is a surprising dearth of extras on this Blu-ray/DVD combo set. No director commentary, and only two supplemental features on the 70mm process and a terse Samuel L Jackson glimpse of the set. Surprisingly few behind the scenes docs, and no overture or intermission, as the Road Show theatrical release featured. The film itself is vintage Tarantino, but I was expecting more bang for my buck with this package. Especially in light of more bare bones DVD packaging. One expects more from Blu-ray editions.

Great Film
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Not sure why there are any bad reviews on this movie when everyone I watched it with liked it so much. The story line was full of twists and turns and even tho it was a bit predictable on where it was leading, it was done in such a way that kept us attentive throughout the movie. If you pay attention you will see the little hints that the characters see but never mention out loud. I must say that the last quarter of the movie was a bit shocking and I loved it! You won't be coddled with this movie. There's no cute love story to wade thru, no happy ending. Exactly how I love my movies.

Hateful Eight Was Great
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This really was a great movie. It had that gritty Tarantino feel from start to finish. It had superb dialogue between characters throughout. I did not expect to laugh out loud so much. And the cast was really well selected. The twists and turns in this "who done it" type of plot were done well in that the audience does not see the outcome way before it happens. I truly liked this movie. Between the language and violence, this film might not be for everyone. But for me this was quality cinematography at its finest. One of the ten best films of year in my eyes.

NOT A 5 STAR STORY, but...
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.not a 5 star story, but amazingly filmed. Tarantino likes to do the same formula for most of his current films. this one seemed like a bad Django. the only saving grace was the ultra panavision 70, 70 mm filming. it really was a treat to see a process used but only a few times in cinema history. lots of wide open space caught in the frame. more info on that process in the extras. which i enjoyed more than this story. i plan on putting it on with no sound, and playing some good music to it. 3 stars for the story, 5 stars for the ard direction/cinematography/filming process.

Max- ultraviolence- now shot in GLORIOUS 70mm!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'm a mark for Tarrantino so my bias is heavy. The film may be a miss for some as it is an extremely slow build. If you stick with the first 90 minutes (still engaging but very plodding) the final half is an immediate pay off. If you're at all squeamish about the dark side of human nature steer clear as you'll probably find this film horrendous. As for the Steelbook presentation- it's another beaut. Simple, yet gorgeous design and this version has some extras that other stores did not offer. QT is one of the finest directors to hear and watch speak on his process so the bonus features are well worth searching out.

Hatefule Eight not for the squeamish
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is Quentin Tarantino's eight movie and he tells you so right in the opening credits. This is set post civil war in the very wild and wintry west. I'll not spoil the story, but the movie is dialogue heavy in the front, but well acted by an all star cast. Yep there's violence. Yep, there's nudity AND violence together. Might not want repeat viewings of this, kind of like a Schindler's list type of film. If you know Tarantino's work, you already know what you're likely to get. Wouldn't let below 14 or so watch it even with their parents.

A bloody but cartoonish western
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is classic Tarantino, with lots of violence committed by physically and spiritually unattractive people. But Tarantino's violence has a cartoonish quality that makes it not much more repulsive than Bugs Bunny shooting Yosemite Sam. In spite of all the violence, the core of the movie is the dialogs that occur within one room by people who are trying to play mind games on each other and ready to shoot one another at any given moment. If you like Tarantino, this will be a good movie. If you're not a fan, this movie won't turn you into one.

Playing Clue Tarantino style.
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Hateful Eight is the appropriately titled eighth film from Quentin Tarantino. It's like playing Clue, but really really intensely with an Ennio Morricone score. The film is only for those who like their movies stylistically brutal, stone cold, and mean as a hornet. If you've seen a Tarantino movie before, you know what to expect. Unfortunately the disc is light on special features, which is quite desirable for a film like this. It also would have been nice to get the overture that played before the movie in its theatrical release.

Quentin Tarantino returns to his roots...
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.A movie with a group of people essentially locked in one location for the duration of the running time? Kinda sounds like his directorial debut Reservoir Dogs. With co-stars Michael Madsen and Tim Roth in the cast, The Hateful Eight certainly hearkens back to QT's salad days. This dialog heavy film is never boring and moves along nicely, thanks to committed performances and a clever script. Ennio Morricone contributes a wonderful score and the WIDE cinematography adds to the appeal. While the Blu-ray can't capture the theatrical experience, it does the best it can in a home environment.
