It's good; almost great
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. They could not possibly have picked a better Bilbo than Martin Freeman. He is what makes this movie. The dwarves are great; I didn't know it, but Richard Armitage portrays exactly what I thought Thorin would look and act like. This is a really good movie, but it lacks the organic nature of the sets in LOTR, and that I attribute to a much more liberal use of green screen. Also, there seems to be too much attention paid to comic relief instead of just letting the characters speak and act for themselves.

Brought me back to Tolkien
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Really had no interest in watching the Hobbit, but after getting a 3D TV, got this movie and now I'm back and looking forward to the rest of the trilogy. Not as good as the LOTR, but enjoyable nonetheless. A little CGI heavy, but still enjoyable. 3D is okay - not pop out type, but just enough to add to the experience if you have a 3D TV.

The Hobbit doesn't disappoint
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If you enjoyed The Lord of the Rings trilogy, I highly recommend purchasing The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. The movie is enjoyable from beginning to end. It's neither too long nor too short. It would be nice if I had the option to purchase a DVD that doesn't include a separate DVD for something I will never watch (i.e., special effects).

Another great chapter
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I do not really like movies that go back and forth so much that there are sequels and prequels, but that is how it goes anymore. I did like this movie and look forward to the whole collection and then it would take a long, but worthy, marathon to watch all the movies in a row and have a great story from Hobbit to Return of the King.

Satisfactory..
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I liked the character, Bilbo as a younger Hobbit but wasn't too crazy about the make-up of the Dwarfs. They seemed fake and didn't come close to the realism of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Also, I don't know if it's me but I don't remember any of this in the book by J.R.R. Tolkien. However, I did in the long run enjoy the whole movie and plan on watching it again and am glad I purchased it. I really liked the Elf, Turiel a lot and again, Orlando Bloom was great as Legolas.

worth waiting
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This version of the film gives a more in depth background of the shire opening scenes and a few added xtras throughout. I should have passed on the theater release and just bought this one. I will wait for part 2 and 3 extended editions to buy. The added commentary is a pleasure. The narrators vive even more insight on book vs movie.

Great Film inTradition of the Lord of the Rings
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Good film that picks up as it progresses. Thought I bought the 3D version but was disappointed when I got home and realized that wasn't the case. Converted it to 3D with an LG player and watched it on a 60" LED LG set. Quite enjoyable. Especially the actions scenes. My favorite scene was when the ogres were about to cook the dwarfs/hobbit.

Big Tolkien fan, some gripes, overall good
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Love anything hobbit. Biggest gripe is the non-existent additions to the story to beef up the profits. No one ever deals with Bombadil, that would have been a worthy real character addition. Second biggest grip is associated: they used 3 movies (one for each LOTR book), and took 3 movies for the shortest of the 4, The Hobbit (gold digging for profits by creating extra screen time, non-existent aspects, and 2 additional movies). Overall, disregarding the fluff, and viewing as if not read, great!

The Beginning Of An Epic Series
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Waited for The Extended Edition to go on sale and it took till now to finally buy it. Couldn't beat the price of under $15. For the people that like the extra fillers and longer movies, this movie is for you. For those that saw it in theaters, you will notice the extension of some scenes.

Great DVD movie! (I'm a Tolkein fan)
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I pre-oredered this DVD and it came on the first release date. Having watched the movie I wanted to see it at my own pace at home, and to add to my Rings trilogy. It is a great movie. I am hearing impaired, so being able to select closed captioning helps to fill in the blanks of anything I may have missed watching it on the big screen.

Solid edition, but not as complete as LOTR:EE
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I really enjoyed The Hobbit Trilogy, but when compared to the Lord of the Rings Trilogy the movies fall a little flat. The reliance on CGI, when the LOTR movies used more practical effects, is a detriment. The Extended Edition of the first Hobbit movie also falls a little short of the precedent set by the LOTR Extended Editions. The features that do exist are okay, but missing is the disc featuring the feature-length documentary that was present on the LOTR discs.

I loved it, especially Thorin.
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've been waiting for this movie to come out and the sequels. I enjoyed this movie and dvd and the second movie in the theater and can't wait for the third. There were a couple things I was kind of not happy about. The orc king's perfect English and a few of the changes from the book. Overall though I really enjoyed the movie.

Even if you are not a fan of the Lord of the Rings you will like this movie because it is so well done. Good acting, Great graphics. Full of Action. Too graphic for small children but fine for teens. Visually beautiful version of classic.
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I never cared for the Hobbit until I finally watched it on TV. So, I bought all three installments on Blu-ray and now I am a fan. Stunning visuals and action advance the story nicely to avoid slow, boring moments. I am now a Martin Freeman fan in addition to all the other star power in the three films.

Great family movie!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Great action adventure family movie. 3D is just icing on the cake. Highly recommend. Very long movie as is every single episode in this series. You'll need to watch the entire series (6 movies altogether from Lord of the Ring to The Hobbit trilogy) to really understand the plot.

Not The Book
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Hobbit Movies are not the book, the book has a better story arc that makes more sense. However the movies are epic with nice effects and decent acting. In other words, if you're expecting the books, you'll hate them, on the other hand if you just like well-made, high-quality movies, then you'll like them.

Not Tolkien's Hobbit
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Although there are some great performances, Peter Jackson doesn't grasp the concept of constraint. The book was essentially a children's fairy tale that was later ret-conned into the larger and much more serious Lord of the Rings. And that sharp contrast plays out in the movie. You have the lighthearted introduction of the dwarves and downright silly dish washing scene, but then dive quickly into darker events as the growing darkness gets brought in to tie it with the later movies. One of my biggest complaints is the finale which is a tiring string of battles that you feel will never end. Things are made worse since there's absolutely no drama since this is the first in a trilogy; you know none of the heroes are in any real danger. I was brought to the breaking point by the fact that much of this sequence just seemed like a rehash of the Mines of Moria sequences. When the credits started to roll, I was overjoyed to know it was finally over. Overall this movie is just like all the other Jackson adaptations a very mixed bag. There's some great performances, gorgeous set pieces but no restraint either in narrative or visual excess. This was the steelbook version. Please be aware it contains the 3D version of the movie only. If you want to watch the 2D version, you'd need to redeem the code for the digital copy and stream it a compatible device.

There & Back Again
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. These extended cuts are always the definitive editions of Peter Jackson's Middle-Earth films for me. This movie is packed with special features for those interested in a very in-depth look at the film making process. The added scenes also feel like good additions to the theatrical cut of the film.

One of my best!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is one of my best movies. Already a fan of The Lord of the Ring trilogy, I also was delighted to see this movie, and waiting impatiently to see the two others... Image quality is just amazing and I also had the chance to see it on my Passive 3D LG TV which renders the experience even more immersive. Fully recommended!
