This film was an exceptional follow-up to the first. Although the director took some creative liberties with the story, the additions worked out really well and helped porpel the story forward. Action sequences will not dissapoint and the tale is more engaging this time around. Definitely a solid build up to what should be an epic finale. A must see for any Tolkien fan.

For those Tolkien fans that demand this movie must mirror the text, stick with the book. For fans of the LOTR movies, Peter Jackson and his crew create a fun movie that returns to his cinematic Middle Earth. If you need to make a choice between the theatrical or the extended, get the extended version with all the extras. Even for a few minutes, it nice to stay longer.

You already know the story so I'm going to tell you about the disc. Another superb reference quality Blu-ray disc in the Hobbit trilogy. A beautiful rendition of the film, perfect picture and audio quality, tons of supplements and matching case like the first film. If you have "An Unexpected Journey Extended", then you need this one too, you won't be disappointed.

Lots of action throughout the film. Better pace of events from dialog scenes to battles and intense moments. The first Hobbit film was great but had times when it seemed very slow. This one didn't. The story and characters keep are very entertaining. Cinematography was done well with get visual / special effects. Everyone who enjoys a fantasy world will love this film.

I really, really enjoyed the movie. The river escape scene was hilarious, the creation of Smaug and the gold room was incredible. The acting and interactions of the ensemble were great. This is a great, great visual representation of a fantasy tale. The state of the art special effects processes have finally reached a point where they can believably tell any tale now.

As a huge fan of Peter Jackson's LOTR and Hobbit films, it's hard to say anything really negative, but compared to the other Extended Editions, this entry falls a bit short. The additional scenes definitely add to the film (and the EE will always be the preferred way to experience these movies), but don't add the massive value that I thought the LOTR EE's did. REALLY looking forward to seeing the film this sets up, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, which I think will be epic, but not at the expense of being faithful to the book, as this one was in its last hour.

If you liked The Lord of the Rings trilogy and the first Hobbit then you will like this movie. Most people dislike the second movie of a trilogy as its' beginning and end aren't a typical movies style - it has to get you from the first movie, keep your attention, and then set you up for the last movie. The Desolation of Smaug does all three with ease and style.

It may feel like familiar territory. Many of us have seen " Lord of the Rings". This movie has the same feel. Seeing that Peter Jackson is at the helm again; it is not surprising. Seeing this finally on film as a live action and CGI film beats what was available to us before. A poorly done animated film . Sit back and watch ; join the rest of us in middle Esrth .

The Extended Edition adds more content to a great film. Like the Lord of the Rings Extended Editions the Extended Editions of the Hobbit films are must haves for fans of the movies. The packaging style matches the previous Hobbit release and looks good next to the Lord of the Rings set. Excellent bonus material rounds out this 3 disc set. Highly Recommended!

The second installment of the Hobbit trilogy starts where the first movie ended and introduces Smaug the dragon and the men of Dale. Bilbo Baggins and the band of dwarves continue their journey to the lonely mountain, fight spiders, get captured by elves, and make it to themountain where they send Bilbo to spy out the dragon. Sound and picture are excellent.

Highly recommended for those who enjoy Tolkien. Some complain about the single book of the Hobbit being chopped up into 3 episodes for maximum profit. While i'm not a big fan of the approach either, it does include appendix data from LOTR and other Tolkien writings to add more depth. For a home implementation of 3D it's a lot of fun! The BD detail is spectacular.

I went hunting for these movies in two different stores... Best Buy still had them in stock. Thank you for saving my rainy/sick day date with my husband! We both grew up watching LOTR at least once a year, now we can add the Hobbit films to that agenda. Regardless of the books vs. movie experience... I'm still in love. :)

This movie is as good as An Unexpected Journey, but not as good as any of the 3 LOTR movies. Part of this is due to the fact that the movie differs a lot from the book. Another part is due to the fact that they are stretching it into 3 movies when it should be no more than 2. The final piece is that the Director is trying too hard. I say just let it be...the books are amazing. If he could just follow them the movies would be as well. In short, I like it. But I could have loved it if I had never read the books. Peter Jackson (Director) can do what he wants, but why Tauriel?

This film is just fun, fantasy folklore and we set loose the imagination... Now, film has become the new novel which is alright, especially when it's been done well. Whether it is Dwarves washing dishes or in route to the mountain it is the journey and the friends we make along the way that is so important in our lives and is embellished upon in this script...

The 2nd part of Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy certainly fits into his vision of Middle Earth. Taking the original trilogy and turning them into a cinematic trilogy was amazing, but being able to take a single book and really dive into the mythology is another amazing task. The special effects in this film are very impressive, the action sequences as well. Heck even Smaug not only looks and sounds awesome, but the portrayal of his size is quite impressive. If you like epic adventures, Fantasy or Lord Of the Rings then the Hobbit Desolation of Smaug is certainly for you!

I was looking forward to seeing this movie and I was not disappointed; in the movie itself or the performance of the Blu-Ray and DVD. Both gave crystal clear picture with excellent sound. If you're a fan of the fantasy genre, this movie would be a great choice. The HD picture does justice to the special effects throughout the film. Highly recommend!!!!!

Peter Jackson has established his place in history with the Lord of the Rings trilogy and is doing it once more with the Hobbit. Even though the book is les complex and far-reaching as the movie, Jackson has done a phenomenal job of telling a gripping story. His casting is excellent, and the characters come to life in the movie. Hurry up Dec 2015 for part 3.

Very disappointed that Bryan Cranston's role in the movie was so small. What little they gave him he did perfect. Most scenes the directing was brilliant, and the acting was good to adequate. I can find no fault anywhere with the CGI or camera angles, some were heart stopping, but often the depth of 3d vision was just a little less than I hoped for.

CAN NOT WAIT for the last installment of the Middle Earth saga and looking forward to a CRAZY marathon of 3 extended version Hobbits and 3 extended versions of the Lord of the Rings movies...HOW many hours of incredible story telling and strong character development is THAT??? WOW!!!!
