My opinion maybe a little biased for I am a Tolkien fan. The book sometimes strays from the book, while still attaining the feel and essence of the original story. The talent, colors, costumes, scenary is amazing. Youcan see some computer graphics but not enough for me to turn away. Great family movie compared to what's out there.

The book has been split into 3 different movies. This is the 2nd part and the 3rd and final part will probably be in the theaters Dec. 2014. Just as the sequel: Lord of the Rings. J.R.R. Tolkien continues to entertain us as does Howard Shore and his musical scores. All actors are excellent and do a great job of playing the roles.

If your in to fantasy movies the Hobbit is a great trilogy. Haso a good plot, plenty of action, and good special effects. Be sure to watch them in order as it is really one long movie cut into 3 parts. No closure to anything. The movie just stops and the next one starts where the previous movie stopped.

If you're a fan of the original Lord of the Rings trilogy you know exactly what you're getting with the Hobbit movies. While the Hobbit movies are not nearly as epic as the LotR Trilogy, it is still a great movie experience to spend some time back in Middle Earth. I found this second installment of this new trilogy to be more entertaining than the first film. The "Extras" are what you would expect of these films. There are features about the movie magic. Overall I can recommend this film, it leaves you ready for more!

The film is excellent, we all know this. Blu-ray quality of the grainy-ness and grittiness of the film is fantastic. Sound is excellent. The extras aren't wonderful, but do give fun little tidbits. Would have been better shot in HD, but, as with the LoTR Blu-ray set, is not. Regardless, a wonderful purchase. Highly recommended.

    Improves on the First Movie

What's not to like? There are wizards, elves, dwarves, dragons, hobbits, and Golum! The pace is much better than the first movie with more action and intrigue. What's not so great is that it is a bridge between the first and last movies so there is an element of incompleteness. Overall though, a great movie for any Tolkien fan.

I like the story and how it follows close to the book. The characters are how I pictured them when I read the book years ago. I love seeing the creatures (such as the trolls and the eagles) come alive on the screen. Our whole family loves watching it over and over again. We are looking forward to the extended edition. Love it!

Great movie to watch from beginning to end. Characters were well played. Special effects is believable. Can't wait for the next movie. I wish we could have watched the hobbit series before the Lord of the rings since the hobbit leads up to it. I would recommend anyone who hasn't watched these movies to begin with the Hobbits.

In the first part, Peter Jackson whetted our appetite with glimpses of things to come. In this second part, the action gains full momentum. The lush scenery, both real and CGI, are a feast for the eyes. Having all three versions ensures you'll experience the story in more detail and wonder as you upgrade your AV equipment.

I don't really like the fact that one book is divided into multiple movies, but in this case it is totally worth it. Even though each film is still relatively long, this has given the movies ample space to include more details from the book as compared to jamming it all into a single movie. Looking forward for the third film.

The Extended Edition of Desolation of Smaug is a definite must own for any Hobbit fan. The features delve deep into the making of the film, with many hours of interesting content. The extended portions of the film add in much needed content to help fill some plot holes that were cut out of the original film. A must have!

The second installment in The Hobbit story line continues the Peter Jackson tradition of delivering an amazing adaptation of an amazing story. The cinematography, editing, and scoring are top notch, as all of his movies based on Tolkien's stories are. It seems like it will be an eternity before the next installment comes out.

Being a fan of the Lord of the Ring movies, I had to check out the Hobbit trilogy. This second movie is just as good, exciting, and enjoyable as the first movie. Plus the DVD set includes some great bonus features as well as the opportunity to download a digital copy. This movie is perfect for fans of the books or the movies.

Even though the movies have a lot of extra plot lines than the book, they don't detract from the story. The movie stays true enough to the book to keep those that have read it engaged. One of my only gripes is that they severely shorted the section where they go through the forest...there is a lot more about that in the book.

I'm sure there are Tolkein purists who are not big fans of Peter Jackson's work, however I rather enjoy his take on the mythos. Albeit this is the one film out of five, so far, that takes rather huge liberties with the source material, but I don't mind. Great flick, and another great addition to the Middle Earth film library.

Superb middle movie of the Hobbit Trilogy. Picks-up the pace the The Hobbit: An Unexpected journey, as the traveling pack must endure their strange encounters on their adventures to return the Dwarf King to his rightful throne. Movie sets-up perfectly for the third and final part in December 2014, The Hobbit: Into the fire.

Great action adventure family movie. 3D is just icing on the cake. Highly recommend. Very long movie as is every single episode in this series. You'll need to watch the entire series (6 movies altogether from Lord of the Ring to The Hobbit trilogy) to really understand the plot.

This is a definite improvement over the first in the hobbit franchise, which was not a bad movie either. But this series has still not approached the majesty and character of the Lord of the rings series. The biggest problem is that the movie is too long and as a result there is some definite drag in the middle. The characters also just aren't as compelling as the LOT bunch. Still, there is gandalf, middle earth, and some great chase sequemces. Definitely worth the time but not yet fully reaching it's potential.

I enjoyed the theatrical release of The Desolation of Smaug, but holy cow this director's cut is very long! An additional 21 minutes of footage has been added which helps flesh out some aspects of the movie that needed it, and some things that didn't. Also some things that could have used some more fleshing out weren't such as the conversation with Smaug. But overall, the additions are welcome if you can stand the long (3 HOURS!!!) run time. I may be getting too old to sit still for 3 hours now days.
