Nothing but the best in this next installment by Peter Jackson. The story comes to life vividly and leads well into the final installment. Jackson brings enough in from the histories by Tolkien to be able to flesh the movie out - you don't realize how long it is til you stand up!

If you have a 3-D TV this is a must purchase. Just seeing Smaug come to life was incredible. The depth and accuracy of the 3-D quality was the best I've seen in any film to date. Also the surround sound quality was phenomenal and when put on Dolby Digital it was consuming experience.

Another deep dive into the Tolkien universe. While there were liberties taken with the movie, and it deviates some from the book, its still a great adaptation. If you liked the Lord of the Rings movies, or books, or the last Hobbit movie, or book, you should love this movie as well.

Like the LoTR movies, the Hobbit movies don't fail to deliver on beautiful cinematography and excellent acting. I'm trying not to like the storyline with a dwarf and elf falling in love because they are not Tolkien characters, but it is very endearing, nevertheless. Wonderful movie.

The Hobbit so far is turning out to be a great set of movies. I am still upset that they decided to split the movies up over multiple years but I guess that is how they can make more money. I would highly recommend seeing this especially if you liked the lord of the rings movies!

The Desolation of Smaug filled in for the Hobbit's shortcomings...this one actually had a decent conclusion. Now we must wait for the third film! Anyway, this transfer looks gorgeous, and the sound as well. The 3D is spot on, better in my house than in the IMAX theater I saw it in.

There is a lot of CGI in this movie and it definitely shows. However, in terms of pure entertainment this movie is a win. I still find it baffling that they are splitting The Hobbit, a relatively short book, into 3 movies. Could have done it in 2, but we all know its about the $$$

Great! the movies are great! I thought they could have done this in one movie but the books were similarily long so it had to be done in more than one or they would not have done it justice! I am looking forward to the last part! Then I will watch all of them from beginning to end!

As usual, a nice upgrade from the original movie plus one of the better bonuses for fans of the Hobbit trilogy! The key alone is worth $30.00 before shipping on the Noble site. It doesn't come with the fancy wood/glass box but it's easy to display and well worth a little extra!

The sound on my iPad using the Flixster app is very low even when using a speaker but it is a great picture and I guess the sound could be worst so I am just glad to be able to watch at anytime or place. I grew up on The Hobbit and know it well. Great to have it on the big screen.

It is it's own story based off the Hobbit book.

The Hobbit was not a long book. When I heard that they were making a trilogy of the one book I thought that it was overkill. My guess was right. It is too much fanfare for that one book. So they have taken to embellishing and adding new plot lines. I am not a die hard Hobbit lover so I have actually enjoyed this treatment of the story on film more than I liked the book. I am curious as to what twist and turns they will add to the final installment.

    Better than Unexpected Journey

I was a little skeptical about "the desolation of smaug". Mostly because "an unexpected journey" was not that great. Peter Jackson has added a much better story with amazing battles this time around. Still not on par with lord of the rings, but it's a step in the right direction.

Bought this movie because I had seen the first one in theaters which I also bought. Wanted to have this in my DVD collection because I knew I would watch it multiple times. A great cast of characters, funny as well as exciting and action packed. I would recommend this to anyone.

This is a great movie to own! The first Hobbit, "an unexpected journey" was Fantastic and the second one, "the desolation of Smaug" is even better! Best buy always has a good price and every Tuesday I look forward to new releases so I can pick up a great movie at a great price!

If you're like me once you buy the first of a trilogy you need the rest regardless of how good it is but this was better than the first because they finally introduce Smaug. I'm also kind of biased because The Hobbit and LoTR have been a book favorite of mine since I was a kid.

I loved all the previous dvd. And have them. Lord of the ri ngs, the two towers and return of the king. So glad they decided to do bilbos story. I thought the dragon was very well done. Its been a long time since I read the trilogy, but I think it follows the books pretty well.

This series is the second part to the prequel to the hit series - Lord of the Rings. It is pretty hard to have a hit when making movie series but has it all...storyline, cinematography, action, some romance and the tehnology involved in making these films almost seem a reality.

As the continued story of the hobbit evolves we get to explore middle earth and build up to the LOTR trilogy. The sound is crisp and the picture very good, I watch on my HD projector so any bad picture soon show, nothing like that here though. Just a great and enjoyable movie.

The Desolation Of Smaug picks up where An Unexpected Journey left off, with this movie, the group heads towards Lonely Mountain. As with the previous movies based on the Tolkien classics, this movie takes the guys on many of an adventure in their effort to get to the mountain.

journey continues for Bilbo and company in search of the Lost Mountain. Along the way they encounter a wild man, orcs, elves, and questionable town people. Plus, let's not forget the dragon. Will Bilbo and friends reach the Lost Mountain in time? Will they survive the outcome?
