best trilogy
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.while its not my favorite movie or trilogy. It is definately the best ever in book->movie process. Its definately worth having in ones colleciton. I rarely ever buy movies individually... except at estate sales... but buying collections... best way is online or store. I currently have 12 collections and 500+ movies. Im hoping to buy this collection cheaper (bluray or dvd) soon.

Finally Extended Edition on Blu Ray
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was happy to hear this to finally come out months ago to now be able to watch at home. Very nice box set. The box that holds the discs is designed like a novel. All 3 extended edtions are housed in the box in their own separate cases. As for the multiple discs if you goto the site THEDIGITALBITS.COM and read the detailed review that is listed you can see why the studios went with the multiple disc option and with the runtime on all 3 movies. The studios decided to let these movies have as much room as they can to breath on blu ray. The movies have alot of visual detail and audio. The more the video and audio is compressed on a disc is when you get a down grade in audio and video. This is the best blu ray set I have seen. picture and audio is stunning. On a big screen tv and surround sound system really makes these movies shine. So if your a fan of all 3 of these movies and have a blu ray player pick this set up while you can. The extended editions are the way to go. With more story in these movies is always a welcome for this series.

Perfect As It Is
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Some people says that they didn't like the way the movies are separated into two discs. But to me, I think it was better that the movies are like that because the movies will be in higher quality. Half of the movie fills the disc is better than the full movie. If the full movie was in one disc, then it means the movie was shrunk to fit in it, so having half of the movie in one disc means it was not as shrunk.

GREAT MOVIES NEVER GET OLD
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. For any one who has acheived the herculean task of reading the entire Lord of the Rings, from cover to cover, director Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy is a delight. Though the book has tons more than hollywood could cram into any length film, what has been included is executed marvelously. Each film simply shines in this re-release of the extended editions. High definition is what this movies were made for since cosmetic computer touches run the length of all three. The armor suits shine with more detail, actors are more wrinkly than memory recalls, and biggest reason to get them on their original release dates (6 months after the standard dvd release some ten years ago) was that the first movie ran an extra half hour; the second a full hour longer; and the third nearly five hours long! We all remember the agony of holding it in an hour into the film because they were worth it, right? Mercifully the home versions can be paused, and with blu-ray the sound can be heard uncompress for the first time. If I only had a more modern receiver I could be watching this film in 7.1 sound, but I have an older high current receiver. However it still rocks! Totally worth the money but you should always be smart about your money and shop online. In-store; a bit pricey. Sit back and enjoy every frame.

The Holy Grail for LOTR fans!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. What can I say? This is my favorite movie of all time (I consider all three movies just one continuous story at this point). And the only way to really see it with the Extended Versions which bring so much more depth to the story, especially at the end of "Return of the King". We have watched our boxed set DVD versions of LOTR (Extended Versions) during "Hobbit Marathons" several times a year since they were first available. The DVD's are considered some of the best mastered for PQ & SQ available, reference quality. Was worried that I'd be a little disappointed that the Blu-ray versions wouldn't be a huge improvement. But so far have been very happy and pleased that the PQ & SQ are even sharper and more impressive than I had hoped. My only regret is that they weren't able to somehow upgrade all the excellent special features to HD also. But since I've already watched all of them on the DVD set anyway it's not that big a deal to me. This truly is the One Box Set To Rule Them All!

Get this collection ASAP
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If you have a Blu-Ray player, a HDTV, and Surround Sound or just one of the above get ready to have your world ROCKED! This collection is the best collectors edition I have. The picture quality on all the Blu-Ray movies is unfathomable. The sound quality makes it feel like I am back at the movie theater listing to the film for the first time. The three Lord of the Rings movies are divided into SIX Blu-Ray disks (TWO per movie) and the special features are all DVD. This was something I did not know when I bought this. The extended cuts of the films are long but worth it! I love all the amount of detail that the extended editions have. There is literally nothing left out. If you are a fan of the movies since the beggining or just getting into them BUY THIS NOW!

Great definitive BluRay of the LotR Trilogy
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This was a superb production and I'm glad I waited for this one to buy BluRay. Picture quality is beautiful, draws you in on the smallest or largest shots. The extra features are entertaining and will still take me some more hours to get all the way through. With the original DVDs they went for an "encourage people to buy both" tactic: the 'theatrical' editions had some extras, while the 'extended' editions had more and entirely different ones. The 'theatrical' BluRay set included the same extras from the corresponding DVDs and those were left out of this BluRay. It would have been nice if they had put every single thing in, make this a kind of 'crown jewel' edition. But I can let that go and still enjoy this for all it is.

Please Note
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The movies were split between two discs in order to maintain A/V fidelity. I know its annoying to have to switch discs, but I would much rather have to do that as opposed to viewing something with less than optimal A/V quality. I do agree that combining the supplement discs on to fewer Blu-rays would have been better though. With the exeception of some strange color timing choices in FOTR, these discs look and sound great. Spreading them across two discs allowed them to allieviate some of the compression artifacts that were present in the theatrical cuts.

Most Epic of Epics
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. What can I really say? Everyone knows that The Lord of the Rings is an amazing trilogy. The video quality on blu ray is of the best out there. It is so nice to watch in 1080p to see all the details of the characters costumes, delicious. Sound quality is good. I lack a sound system, but I'm sure that is a sensation I'm missing out on. I do think it is worth noting that ALL of the extras and bonus features ARE NOT Blu Ray Discs. They are DVDs. I was really irritated with this since one would assume when purchasing blu ray one gets blu ray. I still recommend picking a copy up. Even if you aren't into it, get it so you can look cool for having it on your shelf.

As Good As It Gets
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The LOTRs are epic films. Excellent plot, amazing cinematography, sub-par to amazing acting, and a TON of extra content! The movies are just as amazing now as when the Fellowship of the Ring was first released in 2001. The extended edition adds some nice extra tid-bit elements from the book that just couldn't be included in the theatrical release so as to keep the film shorter. Note: If you've seen all the extended footage and behind the scenes content from the original DVD extended edition, than you might wont be seeing anything new. From what I can tell, it's all the same. So unless you just want the movies in Blu Ray format, save your money or wait for a sale. My recommendation: if you're a Reward Zone member, save up some reward certificates to apply towards the set to make it cheaper! After the Christmas sale and reward certificates, I only paid $40!!

BluRay Worth Buying Again
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The movies are among the best ever, enough said there. We now own 3 copies of this trilogy: theatrical release (DVD), extended (DVD), and now the BluRay extended. My main question before buying was, "is the quality of the video that much improved with the BluRay that it's worth buying a third time." YES! The quality is amazing, it's like you're watching the movies again for the first time. The definition is so crisp that the movies have much more depth, detail, and color - taking on a 3-D like quality without having to fuss with the glasses. If you are a LOTR fan with the DVD's already and wondering if it's worth forking over even more of your $$ to the studio, it certainly is on this one.

Awesome Movie Trilogy
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Fellowship of the Ring has 30 minutes added in. The Two Towers has 42 minutes added in. The Return of the King has 50 minutes added in. Can it get any better? Well, of course! With each movie, you get two discs of bonus features! And these are not features that are boring to watch. You really get a first hand look at the journey that many, many talented people took when making this trilogy. Everything from adaption of the books, to special effects, to the music, to the editing process, to stories that happened on set, etc. The bonus features make a whole story in and of themselves!

$49.99 sale price was a no-brainer purchase
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Caught this box set on sale for $49.99 during Christmas week ($70.00 off). NO WAY i could pass this up. The picture/ sound is truly unbelievable and the bonus features are nice even tho they are on normal DVD discs. I had burned copies of the DVD extended version and the video was really compressed considering it was on a single layer disc and length of the movies. I'm not big into bonus material, i bought this for the movies. LOTR fans will enjoy this and it's not a big deal that the movies are spread over 2 discs. You get the very best in video/ audio by not compressing anything. Overall, this was a great purchase. I ordered a 2nd set at the price for a friend and they were very happy.

Clear picture, eye popping detail
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I had recently purchased the extended edition on DVD but could not resist the Blu-ray edition. The epic battles are clearer than ever with every detail vividly displayed. The characters' facial expressions movingly convey their emotions. The viewer gets lost in Jackson's interpretation of the grandeur of Middle Earth and the heroic deeds involving the fellowship of the ring.

One of the best trilogies
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. One of the best trilogies ever made, now on blu ray, the extended release is the way to go, it completes the stories in a more efficient way, gives you more characterizations. All the original material from the previously released extended edition is present here. The transfer on blu ray is phenomenal, a must for all fans, I highly recommend this, it can be a great gift or something to add to your personal collection.

Even best technology has limitations
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I agree the disc splits will be annoying still, but don't throw out that just because bluray has more capacity it shouldn't be so. The reason the picture and sound is better, is because it is not as compressed, so it isn't the same size as the file on the DVD, it is much bigger. Nevertheless, I can't wait.

Great watching it on Hi-Def and 1080p.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I love this trilogy and have always had it on DVD. I like the effects in Hi-Def 1080p on bluray. The extra DVD's on the making of the movies and how the whole series came about is fascinating and interesting. Well worth the price and I bought it for almost half off when I bought it online as Deal of the Day.

What can I say that hasn't already been said?
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. What can I say that hasn't already been said? I had been waiting for this box set to be put on sale, and man, it is a best buy (sorry, bad pun)! Besides getting these 3 excellent, epic films in their entirety and at the highest quality possible, you also get 9 discs of special features. For any big fan of the series, you will definitely want this if you don't already have it. For more casual fans, get this when it is on sale (it often is) and you will be very satisfied.

Fantastic extended editions and tons of extras
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Wonderful to see the movies in extended edition and blu-ray hi-def format. For those that have read the book trilogy and never seen the movies, then overall great adaptation of the books except for the Saruman / Shire ending from the final book. The extras are fantastic and provide wonderful insights into movie making magic. Safe for kids 9+, but beware some intense violence and scary orcs.

Gorgeous on Blu-Ray!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The image quality is stunning! We love the trilogy so much that we've always upgraded--from the original DVD to the extended collections on DVD to this extended Blu-Ray collection. We love the bonus materials and how compact this set's packaging is compared to previous versions. Also, I purchased this when it was a Daily Deal and used a $25 Reward, so I only spent about $25 on this exceptional version. It was an incredible deal!
