What A Rip-Off!

I pre-ordered this The LOTR Collectors Edition, and when I received the box containing it, I could tell without even opening it that I was in for a huge disappointment just by the weight of it.
What a rip off!
$149.99 for a small cheap flimsy cardboard box that may cave in if enough humidity is in the air with a cheap and poorly made ring that does not even shine as described by other LOTR fans.
I had been waiting for years for this trilogy to come out in 4k with a spectacular presentation worthy of the movies themselves.
What a disappointment.
I have not even opened it because I will be returning, because it is outrageously overpriced.
In all honestly, this should be worth much less than the Steelbook edition.
Had I known this, I would have ordered the Steelbook edition, which is not only better and will undoubtedly be the "must-have edition" for collectors as opposed to this outrageously overpriced and underwhelming version.
The problem is that the Steelbook edition is sold out.
That leaves me with just the regular version, but at almost half the price of this "collectors edition," it is a much better deal.
So there you have it, folks...
Avoid disappointment and buy the regular version.
Trust me; you're not missing out on anything spectacular unless you could find this at around a $59.99 price point.

10/10 4K Remaster, but 3/10 Packaging

Let's get one thing out of the way.
Positive
The 4K bluray discs themselves are a great upgrade. This is the BEST version of the film BY FAR. AMAZING REMASTER! 10/10
Now onto the NEGATIVES:
I couldn't believe how underwhelming this edition is compared to the steelbook edition....
You're paying 30 bucks more for a version that has worse packaging that the steelbook edition. Instead of getting an amazing steelbook set, you get a lousy ring and the regular edition...
1) The box includes the regular 89.99 version (nothing special there)
2) The box itself is smaller and lackluster when compared to the steelbook version
3) The entire "collectors edition" box is made out of carboard! (can you believe it?!?!?)
Save yourself money and either pay 89.99 for the regular edition, OR get the steelbook and save 30 dollars.

Beautiful 4k remaster, some scenes don't appear to benefit with little difference in resolution compared to Blu ray version, while others are no contest and incredibly better.
I do have some personal disagreement with the addition of a brown/golden filter to the ent battle at Isengard and especially the scene in Osgiliath where Frodo almost gives the ring to a flying Nazgul and threatens Sam. The original versions of those scenes were cold, dark and blue and gray and I preferred the older color grading for those on the blu ray versions as opposed to the brown gold filter on 4k.

We love the collectors set, it looks like an understated book on the mantle with really minimal markings and some nice artwork, there is an outer peice of paper with all of the technical info and the big 4K branding that is shrink-wrapped onto it and comes off when you open it up, giving it a clean look. The movie set inside the book has the technical info on the back permanently.
Just watched the Fellowship last night and it felt like watching the movie for the first time, unbelievable picture quality especially on OLED with dolby vision.

Good, but difficulties arose playing on my Xbox

I have an Xbox One X (not the Series X), which DOES have 4K UHD Blu-Ray playback, however I could only get disc 1 of Return Of The King to play, with disc 2 not playing. Apparently the Xbox has trouble playing certain 4K discs and as far as I can tell it's a software problem. There are troubleshooting steps that can fix some discs, but some, like this one, are doomed. Luckily this comes with a digital download you can add to pretty much all movie download/streaming sites (Amazon, iTunes, etc.) so I could finish watching there, and I do plan on getting something that is better at playing these discs, but that is a bit of a problem people should know about.

This is one of the best sets and movies I have ever owned!! We all know The Lord of the Rings Trilogy is one of the best trilogies of all time (I think it is the best trilogy ever made) and with this new 4k the experience is the best it's ever been!! The 4k sharpness makes the films way more detailed and enhanced but it also preserves the cinematic quality of the films. The sound is utterly amazing and if you have surround sound you will love this!! The CGI is better there are sometimes where you can tell a bit more the CGI but it still looks amazing. This set comes with the Theatrical, the Extended all on 4k, there is also the digital formats that come with the Theatrical and Extended, AND it comes with the One Ring with the Neclace!! Overall a great set fot LOTR fans!!

A Wonderful Box Set

This set is an absolute must for any die hard lord of the rings fans. The box is just beautiful and the included ring is a nice touch. I mean, who doesn’t want the one ring right?? The movies themselves look phenomenal and you’d be doing yourself a disservice to not see them in glorious 4K!
Be warned, if your very used to how the movies looked on dvd or blu ray, this set does make some minor color changes to some things that may throw you off a bit. Peter Jackson himself oversaw this remaster so at least you know what your seeing at least now is the way he intended to have it look. when back in early 2000’s the tech wasn’t quite there yet.
Overall this box set is a wonderful addition to any collection, 10/10 from me.

Watched all three movies over the New Year's weekend on an 85 inch 4K tv. The movies are timeless and still thoroughly enjoyable. If you are looking to experience an awesome 4K look and feel, only the third movie (The Return of the King) looked 4K quality. The other two, although they did not look bad, did not have the nuances of full visual quality and color range we expect from 4K. Still giving them 5 stars because the lower quality of the two was only apparent at the beginning of the movies. After the movies got going, the story made the visual quality issues fade from my mind.

The 4k Ultra extended addition provides breathtaking audio and superb graphics. It set the standard for all epic fantasies that followed. The cast was exceptional. It is the greatest epic fantasy trilogy ever produced as a motion picture. The extended edition provided very helpful detail one could not otherwise receive without reading the Entire Tolkien Trilogy. It demonstrated that groups with differences between them and imperfections could combine forces for the noble cause of defeating absolute evil. It is a can't miss motion picture trilogy which deserves multiple viewings.

Buyers be aware that this set does not contain the numerous hours of bonus features that the collectors sets of DVDs and Blu-Rays do, however it's still worth it! The set contains a digital code for watching without the disks as well, I was able to redeem it on VUDU to pick up watching in another room if I need to and it's fantastic! The remixed sound is amazing with home surround, and the visuals are beautifully crisp and hold up so well for this masterpiece. Highly recommend to any LOTR fan!

A little costly but I'm glad I picked the collector set up. I'm glad I didn't get the steelbook set because I've seen nothing but issues with it. I absolutely love the necklace and ring that comes with it!!! The 4k picture looks absolutely amazing and the Dolby atmos track sounds great!!! I couldn't recommend this set enough!!

My Precious!!! I now have the ONE RING, Lol. That was a very nice bonus to this box set. UHD versions of both the theatrical and extended versions of the entire trilogy will keep you occupied for a nice weekend. Add in the bonus content and you're looking at a wonderful week of Middle Earth. The boxset is beautiful and displays the disc case well. I love that there is an actual disc case to protect the discs as opposed to putting the discs into cardboard sleeves like many other sets do.

Not going to review the movies themselves. Do you know what they are, and you know that they’re awesome. Just going to review this 4K set, which is compact but beautiful and amazing. The picture is gorgeous. I know that the Blu-ray set had some issues with the color, but I don’t detect that here. Colors are gorgeous. If you’re a fan of these movies, then you obviously want the best iterations of them, and this is probably the best yet, at least for an hour.

The movies in 4k are amazing, as expected. The Noble Collections One Ring is amazing, as expected, but the cheap cardboard sleeve and plastic holder that “showcase” the Ring are just that, cheap and plastic. Displaying the One Ring as it’s pictured is impossible, the cardboard insert just falls out, which is a shame as the box is designed to appear as an opened book. There’s even a beautiful map of Middle Earth on the inside cover, all of which can only be seen if you take the boxset out and open it up sitting flat (so the One Ring and movie case don’t fall out) Expected much better execution for $150.

Poor packaging, not worth the price

This is a review of the product itself, not the films or 4K remaster. For $150, this simply is not worth the price. It's basically just the standard $90 case inside an outer box with a ring replica. The outer box may seem visually appealing from the advertisements and official images, but when you have it in your hand and can physically see and touch it, you will realize how cheap and poorly made the box is (see unboxing videos online to get a better sense of it). The box is essentially made of cheap cardboard with little to no gloss or embossment, and the cover doesn't close shut. A magnetic cover like the extended Blu-ray set would've been nice. In fact, the extended Blu-ray packaging is better in every way than this 4K giftset.
If you're just looking for the movies, go for the standard $90 set. If you wanted a set with pretty packaging, go for the steelbooks (if you can find them in stock) or wait for the ultimate collector's edition in 2021. This giftset could have been so much better than it is, but simply put, it is not worth the $150 and I wouldn't recommend unless you don't care about the sturdiness of the packaging and have the extra money to spare.

I have been a long time Dan of the LOTR. I think I have all the versions in DVD and bluray. When I heard that the company will release the 4k version, I immediately preorder this box set. The 4k treatment was a delight to be seen as well as heard. With the HDR/DOLBY VISION and ATMOS, it was freaking awesome! As if I'm watoit again the first time. I will definitely recommend this to the LOTR fans!

The films are wonderful and have been given a beautiful new color transfer. This isn't a perfect 4K upgrade as it does appear that some degree of DNR has been applied to reduce film grain in parts, however the overall viewing experience is much enhanced by the color and HDR. I apprecaite that
This particular packaging definitely flimsy for the price - the outer box has no closure and is light, while the packaged ring is quite nice, it comes in an even flimsier insert that easily falls apart.

Wanted a collectible version. Picture and sound on the 4K are excellent. Includes theatrical and extended cuts with extended cuts spread over 2 discs. Fan will like, no extras on disc and the ring comes on a chain is nice and the case looks like a book. Nice to display, but movie fans should just get the regular 4K set and save some $$$.
