It looks like my BEST BUY review did not make the cut, so we will try again.
I am a huge fan of LOTR, but slow to come around to 4K, but after a recent view of THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, I was a convert. So I ordered the SteelBook edition, only available from BEST BUY. There were some cheaper alternatives but I opted for the best. I could have driven to the store on that Monday but opted for delivery. Does it really take four days? They promise me Thursday delivery. Each day I check the status hoping it might arrive a day early. No such luck. It is at this time that I begin to read the other reviews. For the most part, the fans love the 4K transfer and overall give it five stars, but when you look at the reviews of the exclusive BEST BUY SteelBook, you find very few happy customers.
My purchase finally arrives on Thursday, two hours earlier than the 7PM deadline. It arrives in a large cardboard box, with very little packing support. Sure enough, my "precious" SteelBook has a prominent dent. I attempt to reach the store to discuss an exchange. Speaking directly to the store is not an option. I decide to drive 30 minutes to the store for exchange.
There is minimum customer service at the store and I wait online another 10-15 minutes for another customer service rep who arrives to help the rest of the line. They doubt they have any in stock, but we are happy to note that they found one and Ieft the store with my replacement.
After getting home, I note the large scratch on this copy. I can't believe that BEST BUY has done little or nothing to address this problem, which you can see is not a one=time thing.
Furthermore, how can Warner Brothers allow such carelessness with one of their titles. Whoever is in charge of the whole Steelbook fiasco, should be taken to task.
With the plethora of complaints, not one comment or apology from BEST BUY. It's obvious they car little about their customers. People need to stop reviewing LOTR, we all now it is a great film. Start reviewing the BEST BUY service, or lack of quality merchandise. We pay $130, for shoddy product pakaging.
I will not buy anymore BEST BUY stuff. No more televisions, no more computers, no more hardware. Cancel culture begins here.

Ordered online. Best Buy shipping guys apparently did not care what was shipped. What I received was a dented metal box set, but the shipping box was not damaged. Very disappointing. I only bought on line as this set was not available at my local store(s). That said, the set is nice (though 30 extra is questionable). The actual 4K movies are 5 stars. Ill keep my DVD copies for the added material that this set does not have.

Mine also arrived dented and scratched, likely because no padding was in box.. No replacements available, I was offered a 15 dollar refund. The internal steelbooks are fine, its too bad because it would have been a nice set to display and costs $30 more then the nonsteelbook version.

The movies are awesome, but I got a dented box. It wasn’t shipped, I personally picked it up curbside from the store! Luckily there was one last one available at a store 2.5 hours away oneway. Cost me $45 in gas, but at least I’ve a good copy now. Point is, you shouldn’t jump hoops to get a set. It’s unacceptable.

A beautiful collection. The best the films have ever looked in remastered 4K UHD supervised by the director, Peter Jackson!
The outer steel casing for the Steelbooks arrived with a massive dent! No stock. Feels like it may well be a quest for a replacement. Truly disappointing to receive this highly anticipated release in such poor condition. One would think a $100+ set would warrant some packing materials!

The greatest trilogy of all time

This has been one of the biggest and best trilogies of movies I've ever had the pleasure of growing up with along with my family doing the same thing since my parents got me this trilogy as a Christmas present I think when I was 4 years old, my family and I have loved and memorized the Lord of the Rings trilogy ever since then and I'm 24 years old now and I'm still in love with it. Everything about this film that starts the trilogy I love so much, the characters, the musical scores, the story, the locations, the styles of the clothing, the weapons, the magic, everything is so compelling and so captivating. Even the mysteries in this film are just so intriguing, like is Frodo going to accept responsibility for becoming the bearer of the One Ring, will the fellowship succeed in their quest to Mordor, will Aragorn accept his responsibility as the heir to the throne of Gondor and give up his life in the wild as a ranger, will Frodo be able to have the courage and bravery he needs to keep on going to Mordor even with no matter what happens, will the Enemy succeed in getting back the One Ring that was forged by him in the first place and even will Frodo ever go on another adventure after this one since it's his very first adventure outside of his home ever, the list of mysteries and questions goes on and it just keeps getting better and better. The Fellowship of the Ring is beyond a shadow of a doubt very captivating for just about everyone and after starting it the journey to destroy the One Ring of power begins and you'll probably not want to stop until you find out what happens next, if Bilbo's first adventure in The Hobbit was outstandingly incredible than so is Frodo's first adventure in the Lord of the Rings. My favorite character is Legolas the elf and my sister's favorite character is Aragorn the ranger, even now we're still completely in love with them and all other wonderful characters who are as wonderfully skilled and courageous as they are. You've got to watch these movies starting with The Fellowship of the Ring as it takes you on the beginning of one of the greatest adventures of all time as it had for me and my family for years and years, part 1 of this trilogy is so wonderfully intriguing and fantastic that you're going to want to watch it over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. You won't regret it, I garuntee it. I never did, still never do and never will!!!!!

Great by Itself, Ruined by Best Buy

Anybody who’s a fan of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ owns the films in some form or another. So this set may seem unnecessary to most. As an owner of it now, I can say it is not for everyone. However, whether this is your first set or just an update to what you already have, I hope there’s something new and exciting for you. I purchased this set alongside the matching ‘The Hobbit’ set, so my overall opinion is generally the same.
First off, let’s get to the not-so-fun stuff. Yes, it is expensive. It’s a steelbook set, and that is to be expected. I already own the theatrical films on DVD as well as the 15-disc Blu-ray set that is just the extended editions with the DVD appendices. So this set is basically just those movies but in better quality minus the special features. However, I believe Park Road Post did this on purpose, assuming most fans already had these special features. Whether or not they did, it’s still a 9-disc steelbook box set. You can’t have everything.
Now that that’s over, let’s get into the more fun stuff. I’ve been back and forth with Best Buy’s exclusive steelbooks. Love some, hate others. But I honestly love these designs, and they match ‘The Hobbit’ set that goes with it (which I also purchased). The remastered versions themselves are amazing. Peter Jackson didn’t “George Lucas” this edition of ‘The Lord of the Rings.’ Firstly, he fixed the “green tint” of ‘The Fellowship of the Ring,’ which was just a small part of making the trilogy feel consistent altogether as well as with ‘The Hobbit’ trilogy. They rescanned the film to get the crisp details that were previously unable to be digitized due to the technology that was used at the time. Also, the audio is balanced better to have both the low dramatic music and sounds as well as have the details in the middle and high frequencies. The digital copies of both the theatrical and extended editions were a nice touch, as I am one of a few people I know that has a player capable of playing 4K Blu-ray discs.
The biggest issue I have with my purchase is it came damaged. I blame Best Buy on that part. Everything I have purchased from them online in the last couple years have come in cheap, thin bubble wrap instead of hard, cardboard boxes. Yes, I received the package within a couple days, but I would rather wait longer if that kept my package from getting damaged in shipping. Now my favorite boxed film set is forever dented because Best Buy does not box their items like Amazon does.
Overall, this is one of my favorite film sets, even with redesigned packaging. It may be expensive despite not having special features but it is newly remastered and contains both editions of each film. The damaging in shipping is the biggest warning I have to those who are looking at purchasing this otherwise amazing set, same with the matching 'The Hobbit' set.

Awesome collection. A little pricey but worth it. I think I had to return one of the sets because one of the steelbooks was bent.

I love all the art on these SteelBooks as well as the outer case. I love that the SteelBooks are separated by foam padding in the case so they don't rub up against each other. I love the fact that these contain both the theatrical and extended editions of the films in new 4K restorations. I don't love the fact that none of the previous special features are included—not even the commentary tracks from the extended editions. And I don't appreciate that all of these SteelBooks have a flat matte finish. It would have been so much better (and worth the inflated asking price over the standard editions) if they were glossy and/or had some kind of embossing/debossing.
Finally, I have to give a shout-out to the pack & ship team at Best Buy who prepared my order. After my Back to the Future 4K SteelBooks were sent to me in a large bubble mailer(!) I feared for the worst, but this set and the Hobbit 4K SteelBooks were shipped together in a perfectly fitted box, and sent USPS Priority Mail. After reading so many horror stories of dented or even smashed up outer cases, I am delighted to report this set was absolutely pristine. Thank you guys, when you take care to package collector's items like this, you get fewer returns/refunds and more delighted customers.

This is the LotR set I've been waiting for! The product itself is great, highly recommend!
However - I feel the need to pile on with the many other people who have received a dented / damaged product. I could go on a rant about the amount of damaged Steelbooks I've received from BestBuy over the years, but this is the most frustrating yet. (I gave this 5 stars for the product itself - if there was a rating for purchase experience it would be 1 star).
This is an expensive, limited run, collectors edition product. Logic would tell you that shipping and handling would pad and secure this accordingly. But not the case. This product arrived in a box that was way too big, with zero padding. So it was able to slide and flip around all through its travel. The movie cases themselves are fine, but the casing the 3 movies are secured in is dented on top and bottom. To the point where I no longer want to set this on a display shelf because everyone's eyes will go straight to the dents.
I have no knowledge of the interworking of shipping and handling operations - but I would assume the buck stops with BestBuy on this. They need to examine their customer feedback on damaged products, and adjust business practices accordingly.

The films speak for themselves. The 4k transfer and audio is the best these movies have ever looked and sounded. They corrected the color timing that created the green cast in the blu ray release.
The steelbook set itself and the steelbooks themselves are gorgeous. However...Best Buy must hav3 baggage handlers working in their shipping. I ordered both this and the Hobbit Trilogy steelbook sets online. The hobbit trilogy arrived fine, there was no damage to the shipping container. But the LotR set had one side completely caved in. Why did they pack a damaged product feom the start especially when the pricetag is $100. Do they actually expect to pawn off damaged goods on people? I took the damaged set and returned it to my local store and exchanged it for the only copy they had. The replacement I got wasn't perfect either. It had a slight ding on the side but it wasn't anything like the one I got in shipping. Being the only one they had in store I thought it was better than taking the gamble going through shipping again.
I can't praise the staff at my local best buy enough however for being undsrstanding and working to resolve the issue.

Bought this as a gift for someone and their reaction opening it told me what I already knew. This collection is stunning. The art on each disc, the case, and the box is amazing. The brushed metal exemplified the art is such a marvelous way. I honestly can't speak highly enough about the aesthetic of this item. Each piece was very well made, and the quality shines through astonishingly. I had no problems whatsoever with shipping, in fact I was pleasantly surprised to see it arrived in a non-descript brown box. (The item was delivered to me just a few days after Black Friday while I was away at work, and I was so worried about it being stolen off my porch, but it was safe in its plain brown box). All discs were unharmed and the case itself was wrapped in film, then more air-packets were placed in the box to protect it during shipping. All in all this product and ordering experience was flawless and I cannot recommend this item enough!

Unlike some other buyers, luckily my copy came right on time and in perfect condition.
The movies themselves are phenomenally mastered with crisp picture, robust hdr color/contrast, and awesome 4k textures I've never seen before on previous inferior versions. These look excellent in my home theater and serve as the new showcase for my system (which used to be Mad Max: Fury Road). The steelbooks are attractive and come with cushioning foam in the slipcase to protect them from rubbing against each other.
Not as much extra content (i.e. The Appendices) as previous versions, so I'll need to keep my old copy as well.

* I am reviewing the product itself
Not the best buy team*
This trilogy is one of the best if not the best trilogy off all time. And should
Never be kept even on the same
Shelf as the hobbit.
The 4K remaster is amazing and brought me just as much joy in watching as it did seeing
It in theaters for the first time. Movies have
Both theatrical and extended editions which is
Nice. And I won’t lie I teared up just looking at the steelbook art. Embossing or debossing would have been a plus but that’s ok. I don’t ever keep the collectible
Cases as they take too much room
On my shelf. And so I didn’t care that mine was dented.
The ONLY downside is that these movies don’t have the special features. But my other versions of these movies do. And let’s be real I barely have time
To watch the films in one go let alone nerd out
About how the chain mail was real and etc.
All in all. Great movie. Worth the purchase. Perfect for me.

The Greatest Fantasy Epic in the Highest Quality

Always marketed as a trilogy, The Lord of the Rings is really one 9+ or 11+ hour movie. Regardless, this 4k pass of the original camera negative by Peter Jackson is incredibly pleasing. To be clear, Jackson did not redo any of the special effects shots; he only cleaned them up a bit. This means that a good many of them stand out because they don't measure up to today's standard of more realistic effects. But I prefer that, as the movie's remain a product of their time. To someone my age, they don't seem so old but so much has happened in nearly 20 years that you don't see movies of this scale that are also of such high quality. If you want this set, you're obviously a fan, and you won't be disappointed. One last thing: there are no special features on these discs- only the theatrical and extended editions of each film.

I mean come on its only one of greatest trilogies ever made in a beautiful steebook set the only thing that i don't like about the set is the the steel box that the 3 steelbooks are housed in dents very easily witch makes it very hard to get one in mint condition i had to exchange 2 them and the second time i exchanged it the awesome employee brought out a big box full of like 5 of them and told me 2 pick witch one i wanted and 3 out 5 of them were dented up thank god i found good one they really need to do a better job at shipping these out since they get damaged so easily but I'm still gonna give it 5 stars since it is a beautiful set with some of the greatest movies ever made the guys that made the Indiana Jones steelbook set should really take notes from this.

I was hoping for pristine picture quality, I got OK picture quality. I still feel this boxed set is worth the price of admission particularly because of the Dolby Atmos sound. This is the shining pinnacle of home theater sound. The Mines of Moria gloriously echo in cavernous reverberations that completely envelope the listener with realistic sound reflections. The battle for Helms Deep in The Two Towers is brought to new heights with its new audio soundtrack but the battle at Osgiliath reigns supreme in my opinion for its use of Dolby Atmos. You will feel like you are in the middle of the battle. I make my opinions based on having a pretty decent 7.1.2 home theater setup with a Marantz receiver and Klipsch speakers and sub. Your mileage may vary depending on your setup. If the picture was spectacular as well I’d give this five stars, but it’s not. It isn’t terrible, but for the time they spend remastering I expected better.
