Not as good as the original, but solid

If you are looking for a solid western, this is it. If you are looking for an interesting story about 7 guys who beat the odds and stops the bad guys, you will be disappointed. The ORIGINAL is much better and the characters are more interesting. You will like the characters but you will be disappointed in the battle scenes. The first battle with the law in town was solid, but the end scene was a little over the top with the good guys not acting rationally. It is good for the collection, but not a movie that I would see over and over again. Open Range is more interesting.

I had no expectations of this movie and in fact thought it was a terrible idea to remake such a classic western. As a remake the movie doesn't really stand up to either the original or the seven samurai. As a stand alone movie it is a good entertaining movie. Denzel is likeable as the ringleader and Chris Pratt plays the same role he does in pretty much every movie but he is still funny to watch. If you go into the movie expecting it to be like the original then you will be disappointed however if you go into the movie with an open mind you will be pleasantly entertained.

Good Take on an Old Classic

I am not an expert movie critic but I really enjoyed the original The Magnificent Seven movie from the 60's. This version takes the core story from the original, changes the setting a bit, adds a few more twists and turns it into a fun and exciting movie. There is obviously some serious star power and the cast selected works well together for a story like this one. It's not just an action movie, there is a story line and some drama involved that kept my wife enjoying the movie as well.

The combination of Fuqua & Denzel is a dynamic, barrier-breaking force of Hollywood that we as fans of the movies should appreciate and encourage project after project. I absolutey love Denzel films and have this film seeded #1 as my favorite Denzel movie/performance replacing Safe House. Grade: A+ P.S. C. Pratt added his own brand of humor into his character and really made it his own. He provided the little bit of comic relief every serious story needs to truly be great

Awesome movie!!! It reminded of 'Tombstone' a little, with how good the story was, and how good the gun play was. This movie was a little more intense though. I just finished watching it a few minutes ago, and I already want to watch it again. ...And now since I brought up 'Tombstone', I want to watch that too. And while I'm at it, I think I'll watch all of my Clint Eastwood westerns, as well as Bruce Willis movie 'Last Man Standing'. All of them are really good westerns.

I really enjoyed this movie. Highly entertaining...really strong acting all around...good, easy plot...very well done. But the UHD presentation - wow! Reference quality for sure. Never more apparent than in the sweeps of the landscapes. Seriously breathtaking. Good use of HDR and even WCG (although the movie is a Western, so more muted and strong uses of reds/oranges). Audio is also reference, to me. Great use of surround and even better use of LFE, with all the explosions.

A modern vision to a classic story, the desperate townspeople of Rose Creek employ protection from seven outlaws, bounty hunters, gamblers and hired guns after the town falls under the deadly control of industrialist Bartholomew Bogue. As they prepare the town for the violent showdown that they know is coming, these seven mercenaries find themselves fighting for more than money.

The director did a first rate job with this remake. I like the fact the movie showed the diversity that really existed in the old West. I watched the movie when I first received it, then took the movie to my friend's house (she is a cancer survivor and doesn't get out of the house much), she and her husband both enjoyed it, then my husband and I watched the movie, and then again I watched it one day. I am a big fan of Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt and Vincent D'Onofrio

The action was great! Denzel was excellent, played his part great and mostly everyone looked like they had be riding horses for a long time. True, it was not a exact copy of the original, but that was fine. Just had small issue with his name, Sam Chisolm. Reminded me of John Wayne's movie "Chisolm", even the music was almost identical to that movie. But the story was great, action was awesome, and much to our regret not everyone lived. True western! Loved it!

I liked the cast of characters that's why I bought it.I Also have the original. Considerable difference. Can't really compare one to another. The action near the end was directed well and acted well. No over the top super CGI effects or anything like that. Some greatly choreographed stunts. Good entertainment to watch for an evening. Denzel Washington and Vincent D'Onofrio hardly recognizable at first, but without fail ... was the best acting and characters...

    Best Western in Years!

Okay I know that distinction of calling it the best western in years is easy because Hollywood has not made a Western film in a while, but director Antoine Fuqua reignites the genre with heart pounding action and genuine drama. I was also privileged to hearing Director Fuqua note that he based the Mag 7 from the famous Japanese flick "7 Samurai". If you have seen that film, it is easy to see the correlation between the two movies. Great movie!

It is worth owning a copy of this updated take on the classic version. I did not try to compare this to the older one. I let each stand on its own. What I will say is from looking at the scenes that were cut, some of them should have not . The scene where Vincent Donofrio and Chris Pratt cook the fish is one of them. It would have given a little insight to both their characters. When I get a 4k tv,I will get the UHD version of this movie.

Whenever a remake is made, there will always be questions asking if it can live up to the standards of the original. Well I suppose that would be a question if you have seen the original. I have not. Though, it is on my list. Overall the movie was well done, and the cast clicked together as if they had actually been traveling all that time together in the west. Definitely worth a watch and for a collector, the steelbook is pretty Magnificent.

For fans of Horse Operas, this shootem' up, even though it is a remake of a remake still holds its own, because of the ensemble of actors involved. Don't try to match the characters with the Yul Brynner film. You maybe able to come up with a couple of parallels, but these are different men with different backgrounds, and different reasons for banding up together. Other than that, it is action packed and although they become the diminished seven as in the original films, they still win the day with a twist here and there.

A Worthy Remake Of A Great Film

I remember the first film from the late 50's (or early 60's?), with Yul Brynner in the title role. It's a great classic western which actually was inspired by an earlier Japanese film. I think it was called 'The Seven Samurai'. Anyway, this current remake with Denzel Washington in the title role, a good but predictable story and excellent supporting cast, this new version is a great addition to a film collection. I recommend it highly.

I bought this without reading any reviews and with no real expectations, as the original 1960 film is my all-time favorite western movie ever made. I have to admit that it was entertaining, but not nearly as fulfilling as the original. While the acting was as decent as expected, the story was still lacking some elements that would have made it a great film. It felt somewhat rushed and there was no real connection with these brave men who decided to fight the unwinnable fight. Still it is worth at least one watch.

This remake of a classic may not sit well with the fans of the earlier version but it's a fun movie as the character roles fit the actors who portrayed them. The action and pace of the movie make the film feel more like an adventure than a true western and yet the attention to detail for western authenticity is still there. If you liked the original theme and plot and you enjoy Denzel in different roles you'll enjoy this movie.

I wasn't sure if this remake would appeal to me or not. The original is my all-time favorite western. Having put that out there, I truly enjoyed this remake. Each of the main characters bring unique skills and abilities to the group and are motivated by different things. I also felt that making the "Bad Guy" a robber land baron an especially good touch used in numerous westerns. In this case, he provided someone much easier for me to despise than Eli Wallach's character in the original. This is a good Western.

A spiritual prequel to Ocean's 11. A group of people joins together to solve a problem they cannot solve on their own. Replace an evil casino owner with a gang of bandits. Replace a group of slick conmen with a group or dirty cowboys. I read that Chris Pratt was played by Andy Serkis in a motion capture suit. There was no mention of this in the special features so I'm going to leave that in the rumor column.

I loved the original Magnificent 7 and wasn't sure a remake would do the story justice. This movie had just enough of the original story to satisfy, with plenty of originality in the choice of actors to portray the new "7" to keep it from becoming just another remake. Lots of violence, but not too over the top. Hard to dislike Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt, but I must say the other 5 were equally enjoyable in their roles.
