After reading the book a few years ago, the film adaptation of the Martian didn't disappoint. Matt Damon was very close to my mental image of Astronaut Mark Watney, the rest of the cast executed very well, and of course the effects were great. It's a great ride start to finish, the science is (I understand) close to spot-on except for the windstorms. Mars' thin atmosphere means the wind doesn't have as much impact - according to NASA, peak wind on Mars would be 60 MPH and without as much impact as similar speed on earth, so nothing like what was shown in the film. So, not totally accurate, but close, so I forgive Andy Weir and the film maker. The packing of this product suits my wishes - I watched the 3D copy, but my wife and friends don't like 3D so it was right to have the standard version. I'm not nuts about Digital Copy - it would be nice if you could put all your movies into one place/app on your computer, and in this case, the digital copy is not compatible with the Windows Movies & TV app. Annoying, but not enough to take a way a star. Enjoyable film, 2D or 3D. Recommended.

Normally, a great book makes a lousy movie. The shift in format from a stream of text to a three-dimensional set with no inner monologue breaks the art form. Then, you have the committee of producers trying to sell the finished product to a completely different audience, possibly in a different decade or century. In this case, however, they were able to add some visual depth and sight gags while keeping the overall feel. They also improved the ending dramatically over the book. As for accuracy, I've seen NASA give lectures on what was good and bad with the original book. The author "crowdsourced" the scientific review as he wrote chapters on his blog, got feedback from readers in the sciences, and refined his text. I was deeply impressed, and I've commanded a simulated Mars mission at Mars Desert Research Station and won two international awards for Mars mission design. The featurettes are also pretty solid, using the sets and actors to extend the story in hyperlinked depth. An excellent example of how to write a novel, do a film, and release a disc, in the 21st century.

Fascinating and enthralling tale of resourcefulness, ingenuity and survival. After a massive storm forces his crew to leave the planet, an astronaut, Mark Watney (played by Matt Damon), is marooned on Mars, and presumed dead. Figuring that it would be at least four years until someone can rescue him, he sets out, though often ingenious means, to survive.. A very well thought-out and made movie from director Ridley Scott. Engrossing, engaging plot - the odds are against our hero, and you feel his plight, yet he finds ways to keep going. The resourcefulness stretches beyond a single man though, to the NASA, and other, people on the ground trying to get him home. This engenders a great feeling of a community of specialists working together. While I can't validate the science in the movie (I'll leave that to Neil deGrasse Tyson!), the science FEELS right - there are no obvious plot holes or inaccuracies. Good performances all round, especially from Matt Damon in the lead role. Only sour note is Sean Bean's character, which came across as cartoonish. A must-see.

The movie manages to capture much of the intelligence, humor and pathos of the book, the visuals convey the stark beauty and isolation of the red planet, and to my mind, the cast play their parts with just the right tone of humor/humanity coupled with the straight-faced "work the problem" professionalism you'd expect from those in science and space exploration. I owned the regular Blu Ray and later bought the 4K UHD Blu Ray after getting a Sony 4K Blu Ray player. Both versions look and sound great: the regular Blu Ray looks very good on a regular HD TV setup, and looks even better up-rez'd to 4K (playback on the Sony UHD player), however the 4K version with HDR adds just bit more definition and clarity, particularly to the shadows and darker areas of the images. The enhanced visuals are mostly subtle so personal choice as to choosing the pricier UHD over the regular Blu Ray (assuming you have a 4K player and HDR capable 4K TV.) As it's now one of all time favorites I chose to take the plunge...

Highly recommended! I was not able to see The Martian in theaters so this was practically a blind purchase. I saw it with an unbiased, fresh set of eyes because I try to avoid reading movie synopsis and stay away from spoilers before my first viewing - it's just a personal preference. That being said, this movie did not disappoint at all. It was very well written and well-researched. Well, I guess the source material is because I later found out that it was based on a book. It holds the viewers' attention for the entire duration of the film. Each challenge that comes up makes you go "so how is he going to get himself out of this mess this time?" The cast were perfect for their roles. The picture quality and audio quality were top-notch as can be expected from a media of this format. I purchased the normal 2D blu-ray version of the film, but it did come out in a 3D version as well. Even at full retail price, this movie is worth the purchase. I got it on release week, which usually means movies released during that week are discounted by about 15-20%.
