    THE MARTIAN

The Martian makes a play for a sort of globalism and unity of Mankind as it moves into its predictably heartstring tugging finale, but what really sets this film apart from many of its science fiction kin is its resolute depiction of both a single working scientist (Watney) and a team of working scientists (the Ares III crew and their NASA cohorts) all using science to overcome seemingly unconquerable odds. The film is tonally a bit of an odd duck, with an almost whimsical sense of humor at times that may strike some viewers as misplaced. But Ridley Scott once again proves he is the master of both the large canvas and intimate personal angles of a larger than life story. Supplemental features are a bit on the self promotional side (what else is new?), but technical merits are top notch and The Martian comes Highly recommended.

More of a survival movie and quite honestly, they skip over a lot of the struggles the main character faces but solid movie overall.

Got it at a great price, and I really enjoy scifi movies. Can't wait to actually see when someone sets foot on mars for the first time.

Solid film. More Hollywood than Interstellar, but good nonetheless. 4 stars...5 though for Interstellar. Matt Damon did great job.

The details are a bit futuristic (we haven't landed people of Mars quite yet), but the premise is entirely plausible. This is a "smart" movie, in that the stranded astronaut must use his wits to try to survive as long as possible in hopes of rescue. Everything he does and everything that happens to him is based on actual scientific fact. It showcases the value of high quality education and the ability to apply that knowledge to solve unexpected problems as they arise. He knows a lot of facts, but more importantly, he understands the scientific principles behind the facts. This allows him to "think out of the box" and come up with novel solutions to complex problems that threaten to kill him before help arrives. Great movie! You'll be on the edge of your seat til the very end.

I bought this film a while ago but decided to find and read the book before watching it. The book was truly a very interesting read. The movie does the book justice. Yes, things are left out, but the movie would have to have been much, much longer. The movie does capture the essence of the book. The visuals and sound are awesome. I would highly recommend this movie (and book) to any SciFi fan.

The Martian is a entertaining extraordinary piece of cinema. I am a huge movie buff who has seen a lot of films this year but this one is great for several different reasons. I like Ridley Scott he has made some great pictures Alien, blade runner, Gladiator, etc. But I did not expect this movie. This film had me laughing a lot which is surprising due to the subject matter. Also Matt Damon's performance was Oscar worthy (not better than Leo's). This movie is what I hoped gravity would be because even though Gravity is a visual feast for the eyes I was more locked into the story of The Martian. It is not the best movie of the year but it certainly is a great one worth buying looks great in blu ray and I don't recommend it often but I would suggest going with the 3d version.

This is a great movie overall. Matt Damon is easily a character to root for not just because you want him to get off Mars but because he is incredibly optimistic about succeeding. Its got a great story with a great cast as well as a ton of heart showcasing what humans can achieve if we chose to work together. The sci-fi lingo is simplified so you can follow what is going on scientifically. I have some friends who aren't big Matt Damon fans but I suggested this movie to them and they absolutely loved it. This is certainly a movie that should be added to your movie collection should you have one, at the very least this is a movie that should be seen. You'll have a lot of fun with it.

Matt Gets Saved in the Year's Feel-Good Movie

An adaptation of the best-selling novel by Andy Weir, Mark Watney (Damon) is an astronaut left for dead on the Red Planet after a disaster on a manned mission to Mars. As Watney struggles to use the equipment left on the planet to survive, NASA and his fellow astronauts must come up with a way to rescue him. The movie is smart (most of the science is fairly accurate), funny, and an ode to human ingenuity. Damon kills it as usual and the stellar supporting cast keeps the non-Mars scenes going as well. After a couple of mis-fires, director Ridley Scott returns to form and brings his typical visual flair and strong pacing to the affair. The extras on the Blu-Ray are a bit skimpy, but the movie looks great, especially on a big screen TV. Well worth the purchase.

Matt Damon's Everyman quality and wry sense of humor makes him the perfect actor to portray Mark Watney, astronaut, in Ridley Scott's "The Martian," written by Drew Goddard, based on the book by Andy Weir. When a violent storm forces the Hermes crew, led by Commander Melissa Lewis (a steely Jessica Chastain), to abort the Ares III mission to Mars, the crew reluctantly leaves without Mark Watney, who was injured and presumed dead. Somehow, Watney survives, and starts keeping a log of his experiences on the Red Planet. He is a realist. It could take years for a rescue team to retrieve him, so he gets down to business: rationing and growing food, making water, repairing damaged equipment, and establishing communication with Mission Control.
