    Matt Damon's Redemption from Interstellar!

This was a very good movie, but as a lover of the book, I was a bit let down. I listened to the audio version and this narrator did such a fantasic job, the movie doesn't show the extent of Mark's sarcastic humor, which I really loved. Of course I know that no movie will ever match a book and there are inevitably things left out, but I hated that all the suspense from the trek to the MAV was just skipped over. It looks like he just had a quick trip while it really took months, he lost communication (completely ignored in the movie), and he wrecked the rover. However, the part that aggravating me the most was the ending. I can forgive small changes to make things fit for film, but completely changing the ending it too much. The book was nothing like the movie in terms of how he was caught by the crew, it was perfectly fine in the book, very exciting and entertaining, changing it was not necessary. I did like that there was an extra scene that showed everyone after they returned home. That was the one thing I would have liked to see in the book.

early 4kDI-to-4kUHD title, still demo worthy

This marks my third purchase of THE MARTIAN; original release, Extended Edition BR and, now, 4k UHD/HDR/WCG ExtEd. (Saw it many times in theaters, too.) This is a true 4kDI-to-4kUHD release. And, while the 1080p HD BR releases were excellent, at the time, this continues to be a demo worthy 4k BR on reference 4k equipment. Purists have noted a few scenes where ultra fine details wobble in 4k (like certain shots of dusty solar panels, distant Martian sandstorms, etc), but these are very few. This 4k fully exceeds the very decent 1080p HD BRs that came before and is the closest I have gotten to vicariously experiencing Mars. Added bonus, at the time of this writing, this title is included in the ongoing BB/20thCF sale, 3 4k-s for US$15/each. Sweet price, especially for a triple dip for one title. (Bundled Digital Copy only redeems for HDX, not 4k UHD, with UltraViolet and MoviesAnywhere.)

    Don't listen to Jarek...

This film may not be completely finished in 4K, but it's without a doubt better looking than its SD bluray counterpart. This film shows much more detail, and displays more color, and is definitely worthy of the 5 star rating I'm giving it. Any videophile would rather have this version than any other. http://youtu.be/dL3vM4n6Fz8

    Excellent movie. Amazing 4K experience.

When I purchased my 4K player and TV I wanted to find a movie that would make the most of my setup. This is that movie. The movie was shot using 4K cameras, so you don't end up with the grain associated with 4K scans of older film movies. It also supports HDR output for an astounding contrast range. The sweeping mars-scapes simply look amazing. I found myself standing up and walking over the the TV marveling at the detail. If you've got the setup, this is the movie you want to show it off.

    Ridley Scott + sci-fi + disco = FUN

Okay, it's not always fun to see Matt Damon suffer (maybe sometimes?). But the quick review of the movie is that for the main part it's fun, energetic, and superbly paced. Some things seem stilted slightly, but those quibbles are plainly minor there. As for the movie on Blu-Ray & 3D, it's a strong presentation and a fairly valid argument for 3D done RIGHT. One could wish for a Ridley Scott commentary (but guess there's now an extended edition coming out?). But other extras are serviceable.

    Science Fiction at its Best

The Martian is based upon the concept of humans travelling to Mars, setting up a temporary base there for mining/sample taking purposes and then returning back to earth with the said samples. But what happens outside of that narrow plan is what this film is about. Its about the human will to survive against all odds, the power of the human brain in terms of resourcefulness and ingenuity and the power of love. A must see. You will probably cry near the end. Don't worry, that a good thing!

Intense movie and worth the purchase

The movie is based on a space crew who goes to Mars and during a terrible storm is forced to evacuate the planet. During the storm, one of the astronauts "disappears" and his team is forced to abandon him. They presume he's dead but in fact he's badly injured but alive. This is the story of the fight for survival. Not recommended for small children because there are some swear words. It comes with a digital copy for your ultraviolet account. It will not work on your iTunes account.

    Captivating plus Beautiful Cinematography

This flick, to say the least, is both captivating and interesting – it’s a pure fun view that really very pleasantly prods your imagination “of things to come.” The cinematography is beautiful and all the scenes are deftly coupled with “just the perfect” sound-track to assist in setting the Directors desired audience mood. Bottom Line – the Director Ridley Scott really got this thing right. The closing scene sequences are absolutely uplifting!

    Awesome Movie in Amazing 4K!

This was my first 4K Blu Ray.. and I'm never going back! Mars looks so amazing with the expanded resolution and color, you feel like you are there with him. I was constantly in awe at the scenery; the picture was so good I'll be honest, it distracted me from the movie a few times. Couldn't stop looking around at all the detail. The movie itself is also very well done, great cast and wonderful acting job by Mr. Matt Damon.

The Martian Puts the Science Back in Sci-Fi

The Martian, based on the gripping best-selling novel by Andy Weir, is one of the best sci-fi films of the last decade. Directed by Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Blade Runner, Alien, Prometheus), the film grabs you visually, intellectually (with science and problem solving) and emotionally as it follows Mark Watney's story of survival on Mars. Matt Damon and the entire cast are superb as well.

    Remarkable

Matt Damon's criminal days appear to be over. Damon becomes an astronaut, only to be left stranded on Mars in this novel adaptation. It stays true to the source material and you're rooting for him the whole time. You feel the frustration of what little chance he has to overcome the odds. A very enthralling movie that takes you on a ride. The Mars landscape is beautiful on bluray. 4/4 stars

    Good Movie, Better Book

    Posted .

I absolutely loved this book. Andy Weir did such an incredible job detailing out all the things involved with this Martian adventure. While I thought the movie did quite a good job transforming the book into film, I thought it left out a lot of what I loved about the book (the analysis, math, planning, etc.). However, I realize that that stuff is a better fit for a book than a movie, so I still think it was a good movie. It stayed very true to the book, and is well worth a watch every now and then.

I'm a huge Sci-Fi fan. With Star Wars and Interstellar as some of my favorites recently. The Martian is right up there with those movies as well. A great overall movie with one of the best actors today. Matt Damon did a great job that won him many awards. This is a must see for any Sci-Fi fan.

Ridley Scott's Best Work in Years

Having read the book, I had high expectations for this film, and when I heard Ridley Scott was going to direct, with Matt Damon as the lead, I was thrilled. Scott is the king of science fiction/space films, and his most recent effort surly does not disappoint. The entire cast is excellent.

One of the best Sci Fi movies ever

Easily the most technically realistic science fiction film I have ever seen; indeed, everything presented may actually be possible now, just not politically and economically feasible. Superb performances and drama throughout, and with an excellent smattering of humor as well.

I'm a space nut. Any Sci-Fi movie that can be so realistic from the science angle automatically is more interesting to me. Unlike the movie "Gravity" you could tell that scientists were heavily involved in the writing and production. Excellent movie, highly recommend.
