One of the best DVD sets out there. Documentary footage from the men who are depicted in this series is top notch! Thanks Hanks!

I had read the books "The Pacific" was based on before it appeared on HBO. While the books (especially "With the Old Breed" by Eugene Sledge) had far more detail, The Pacific was able to put on screen the most important and impactful battles and situations, discussed in those books, in as jarring and demonstrative ways that I never dreamt possible. The Pacific makes it possible for the viewer to put himself (or herself) in the boots of the men who endured the unendureable. Viewers can actually feel like they are an eyewitness to history by watching The Pacific.

The production value of the series is absolutely phenomenal as is the overall quality of the series. Don't go into this thinking it's a show where you'll come out screaming, "YEAH AMERICA!!!" The series is a harrowing and often horrifying look in the one of the most brutal times of warfare. Stunning work overall that needs too be watched by anyone remotely interested in World War II and isn't interested in rose-tinted glasses and romanticism about how horrifying that time really was.

Everyone I talk to when comparing Band of Brothers to The Pacific says that they don't like the Pacific as much because it jumps around. Read history books and you'll find out that the Pacific Theater in WWII did exactly that... jump from island to island. Speilberg and Hanks did a tremendous job in working with this and following the different units of Marines around the Pacific and on the home front afterwards. If you don't know much about the Pacific campaign, I would recommend reading some books first.

The Pacific is an astonishing gut wrenching eye opening followup to the Spielberg-Hanks produced Band of Brothers. It takes you along side the true stories of three U S Marines and puts you right in the middle of some of the most historic and bloody battles of WW2 with no emotions held back. You could not imagine what our heroes of the bloody South Pacific campaigne could have gone through without this 10 part film. You will have a new appreciation of these armed forces and possibly what it took for us to remain the free and the brave. This is not one to be missed!

    Stories within a story

This was a relatively outstanding miniseries about WWII in the Pacific. There were stories within the story about individual soldiers on and off the battlefield. Each ministory was evenly good possibly because of the executive producers that were Tom Hanks, Steven Spielber, and Gary Goetzman. One or two of the ministories were also directed by one of these producers. But many of the stories were directed by other very good directors. All-in-all, a tolerable miniseries of the war in the Pacific, a subject that has been gone over many times but mostly with a depressing outcome.

This is a great and well produced story of the involvement of US Marines in the Pacific Theater during World War Two. While it is well written and produced in similar fashion, the storyline is not as involved as the Band Of Brothers storyline. I would Highly Recommend this to anyone that wishes to understand the sacrifice and in many cases why those that have experienced war first hand come back so changed. I have known many veterans that prefer not to discuss their time in battle and this particular movie gives a small glimpse as to why.

The picture quality on these HD discs is superb. I saw this on HBO when it came out and the picture quality is even better. In addition the extras, which include a picture in picture feature where the real veterans talk about their experiences, really contribute to fully understanding the magnitude of the sacrifices these men made. The movie focuses not only on combat but also on what happened to the men between combat and the toll the fighting took on the human spirit. These men who fought in the Pacific were patriots. This movie is a tribute to them.

This show does an exceptional job of showing the WWII pacific theater. Does an excellent, almost ethereal, palpable job of showing the horrors of that time in history. You really need to know what you are getting into before watching. It is not for the squeamish but should be applauded for that as it pulls no punches illustrating the horrors those soldiers experienced and the toll it took on all of them.

This was a Christmas present for a long time mentor I have in the Intelligence Community. This person was a retired Sr. US Marine Corps enlisted solider and I knew based on his tours serving in Vietnam and other locations around the world that he would enjoy this gift pack. While the subject matter is grim.. He has enjoyed it very much and has given him a greater appreciation of the brave Marines that the Pacific follows through the bloody years of World War II out in the Pacific Theater. Rating A+

This was an excellent miniseries that touched on several U S Marines who have gone on to be legends in the lore of The Corps. The realism was amazing and they kept pretty well to history with just a few instances of artistic license. For me the interesting thing was that over the years I have read all of the books that the miniseries were based on and was glad to see their stories on the screen. Robert Leckie and Eugene Sledge are two of the finest chroniclers of WW II and the bringing to the fore of John Basilone brought a Marine legend to life.

This movie takes you on an emotional roller coaster of a journey with members of the military that fought to protect our country. I don't believe that anyone could watch this box set and not be deeply touched and moved by this brilliant portrayal. I have always had a great respect for military members, however, after finishing this set, it has grown by volumes. I laughed with them and cried with them all throughout the set. A MUST SEE!!!!

I was pretty ill informed about the Pacific theatre from WWII. Other than Pearl Harbor not much made the history books from my youth. Perhaps it was due to the European influence? Perhaps is was due to how incredible the nastiness of hopping island to island in such miserable circumstances. I feel that this is a great series that helped me understand what the heck was going on. I recommend this to anyone that lacked the lessons of the Pacific fighting. Enlightening indeed and I am better for it.
