What worked in SLP 1 was the quirkiness of all the pets and the plot that revolved around Max being used to being #1 dog, and learning to share his life and his home with Duke through a whirlwind adventure. SLP 2 was a film with three separate plots going on at one time; none of which amounted to anything. Primarily, you have Max, whose life has changed drastically after his owner marries and has a kid. He goes into overprotective mode, fearing everything for the toddler. Secondly, you have Gidget whom Max charged with the care of his Busy Bee toy which she plots to get back after losing it in a houseful of crazy cats. Thirdly, you have Snowball embarking on a misadventure to save a white tiger from an evil Russian circus owner. Lots going on, but going nowhere slowly. Thus, the film becomes a scatterbrained money pot lacking the feeling and humor of the original. Added to the mess that it was, the film had coarse language and scenes that weren't child-appropriate. Example: Pops, the old hound uses the word "pi$$ed" in one scene. That kind of language isn't for a family film. Another example: Gidget is having a dream about being married to Max and, while dreaming, is about to kiss him. As she's waking up, you see her flicking her tongue around like she's French kissing Max. That's distasteful in a kid's film. The characters were still cute to look at, and the animation was beautiful, but I recommend renting this, not buying. The only thing I liked was aloof Rooster, comically voiced by Harrison Ford. The rest of the film was a bust.

This one started out a little slow but picked up in the middle of the movie and will have you chuckling several times. I’m glad we bought it. You will too.

    Worthy follow-up to the original

If you (or more likely, your kids) liked the first movie, there’s no reason why you or your kids wouldn’t like this sequel. Conversely, if the first one wasn’t to your family’s taste, this one won’t improve things. Didn’t catch the original? You didn’t miss much.

A let down from the first movie

The sequel was a let down. None of the joyful banter that the first movie held. Seemed as if it was rushed through production without much thought to the plot.
