This is an outstanding transfer of an American horror classic. I have never seen a more beautiful version. Steven King may not have liked the changes Kubrick made to his story, but Stanley turned it in to a beautiful work of art, that is atmosphericly creepy. It was directly referenced by 2 major film releases in the last 5 years, Ready Player One, and it's sequel, Dr. Sleep. In each case the director worked very hard to imitate the original work. Don't forget the over the top performances of Jack Nicholson and Shelly Duval.

I'm biased. I'll admit that right away. The Shining is easily my favorite horror film. So, if you don't like the movie, skip this review. I love The Shining and watching this UHD presentation, with all of it's new details and improved contrast, is like seeing it for the first time, again. The blacks are deep and colors pop making it look like Kubrick shot this last year, not back '79/'80. The image is so crisp and vibrant that I had to restart it right after the credits just to make sure I'd seen what I remembered. For a fan, this required viewing. If you haven't jumped on the UHD bandwagon, yet, buy the 4k player and tv, OLED if possible, and get a copy of The Shining.

Original elemets were in great hape, and the HDR is very effective. Just wasn't as completely blown away by the visual presentation as some reviews had made me expect.

The Shining was and is Stanley Kubrick's Magnum Opus. Possibly the best horror movie ever, besides Psycho. The movie is so good, it has made it's way into the world's subconscious. If you are able to simply see an image of the carpet in the hallways of The Shining and get a chill down your spine, the Kubrick more than did his job well. This is the kind of movie that needs repeated viewings so that you may be able to pick up on something you may have missed the last time you watched it. In my opinion, The Shining and Batman from 1989 were Jack Nicholson's best 2 movies. An absolute must see!

The movie is a perfect psychological thriller. Jack, an aspiring but failed writer undertakes the winter-caretaker duty of a hotel on the Colorado mountains. Yes, he comes with the quite dysfunctional family, through in the beginning of the movie Jack, wendy the wife and danny the kiddo play the audience, giving an atmosphere of normalcy around them. Well, slowly we see the facade falling, as Jack is showing the symptoms of a mentally ill person (hallucinations, sudden rages, depression). It is quite a watch to see how his illness develops in a terrible murderous fashion in the solitude of the hotel. Wendy's courage and Danny's apparent "psychic" powers add to the charm of the movie.

This is a favorite movie from years ago and the new 4K rendering really increased my enjoyment. Glad to have added it to my increasing 4K library. Jack Nicholson is very scary indeed in this flick, what a great acting job, and the little boy is amazing. Shelley Duvall is about as weird as ever! Would buy again for sure. We don't have our sound system set up aside from what came with the new Sony Brava TV, which is decent, so I won't comment separately on the sound but I suspect if you have a home theater sound setup you'll be very happy with this one.

    My All-Time Favorite Horror Film

The Shining is impeccably directed by Stanley Kubrick, the way the camera moves and how meticulous everything plays out is a testament to how great of a director he is. Still, great direction would be nothing if a full story is being told and thankfully what we have here is a compelling narrative of a family being torn apart by inside and outside forces. This movie loves to get inside your head and make you think. It leaves behind a lot of ambiguities to get your gears turning—and it works. My friends and I still discuss the deeper meanings and theories behind this movie to this day. Highly recommended.

I got this as part of the Halloween sale, and for the price it's worth the upgrade, especially if you're upgrading from an older format like VHS or DVD. There's an English Dolby 5.1 track and a digital copy, and a few commentaries and making of featurettes. The film cleans up well and looks like it was made more recently than 1980. Overall worth the double dip if you don't have it on a recent format.

This 4k-release of The Shining is nothing short of a revelation. It looks as though it was shot (on film!) yesterday, not in 1980. Kubrick was obsessive about every aspect of his shoots and we should be happy about that; the performances by the actors are by now legendary, but what stands out to me is the meticulousness and sheer genius of Kubrick; this is a disc to treasure and should be in every film-buff's collection!

The movie looked pretty good. Film-to-4k bluray almost always looks great. Movie is overrated. Kubrick destroyed Stephen King's story.

Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) becomes winter caretaker at the isolated Overlook Hotel in Colorado, hoping to cure his writer's block. He settles in along with his wife, Wendy (Shelley Duvall), and his son, Danny (Danny Lloyd), who is plagued by psychic premonitions. As Jack's writing goes nowhere and Danny's visions become more disturbing, Jack discovers the hotel's dark secrets and begins to unravel into a homicidal maniac hell-bent on terrorizing his family. One of the best Stephen King book to film adaptations. This 4K remaster is beyond excellent.
