It still burns with a 1960’s flair!

For an all star disaster movie, the appeal remains as do the burn marks. a mish mash of characters (some sympathetic while others not so much) eschew the movie set as if it’s a day time soap opera. Seeing it as a Precursor to Die Hard is hard to miss!

This is a classic natural disaster B movie, with an ok story to keep it moving along. Still an enjoyable throwback.

I had never seen it before so I took a chance. If you love the original Posiden Adventure, you will enjoy this one.

Not great, not terrible... it’s amazing this was the movie that got both McQueen and Newman to act together.

Towering Inferno & Poseidon Adventure 70s Best
Posted .

Towering Inferno & The Poseidon Adventure are the "cream of the crop" among 1970s disaster films. Towering Inferno has Steve McQueen and Paul Newman as their current A-list stars. Poseidon Adventure has Gene Hackman, fresh off his Oscar win for The French Connection, as well as Ernest Borgnine. Both films have terrific supporting casts. I give Poseidon Adventure the nod for character development. We really care about them. In Inferno, it is mostly Steve McQueen that keeps you interested (though we have to wait 45 minutes for him to make his entrance).
Far more flaws can be found in Towering Inferno (inconsistency with the effects, mostly). Both films have great visual effects and set designs. Towering Inferno is nearly one full hour longer (2:45 vs 1:50 for Poseidon Adventure). P.A. action begins about 30 minutes in. T.I. about 40 minutes in. P.A., due to its shorter run time, keeps things taut. T.I. has many parts that drag. However, when it comes to the suspense building up the the finale, the winner is definitely Towering Inferno. And John Williams' score (if you listen closely) really adds excitement and suspense in Inferno (especially during the finale). Bottom Line: if you want more excitement and visuals, go with Towering Inferno. If you want more character-driven story and tight pacing, go with Poseidon Adventure.

Blazing Entertainment

Blazing entertainment at it's finest! The plot was amazing and so was the long cast of famous actors of that era. Definatly got that 70's vibe and it even had the King of Cool himself, Steve McQueen. Which is enough reason to get the movie alone, in my oppinion. It's a mixture of suspense and classy drama all packed into an action film. Everytime I thought they were safe and out of danger another challenge presented itself and it kept going on and on right into the end of the film. I heard Steve McQueen did all or most of his own stunts too including the elevator scene? Wow, I'd strongly recomend this movie to anyone.

One of, if not the first, disaster movies

The main characters carry their weight well and, the effects were excellant for the time and do well over time. Newman and Mcqueen do well working off each other, and, you can easily dislike Chamberlain's character. The film does pick up dramatically after the fire alarm getting to the disaster part.

What an excellent movie and an amazing cast. McQueen and Newman sharing the screen is worth the price of admission alone. Recent disaster movies don't hold a candle to this one. Highly recommended!
