Great build up and story (dont expect a gore fest)

The problem with movies now a days is story takes a back seat to gore. This movie does the opposite brings the story and the "fear" to life. If you are expecting blood and death around each corner, probably not the movie for you. Good story line and I love anything Salem/witch inspired. Its also based on accounts and stories from that time.

    A New England Nightmare

A devout Puritan family in 1630s New England are exiled from their village, and struggle to survive in their new home situated at the edge of a mysterious forest. The sinister, witching forces in the wilderness emerge silently to terrorize them, first by kidnapping the youngest of their five children. As their life-sustaining crops fail, the clan fall victim to paranoia and fear as they begin to turn on one another, eventually suspecting teenage daughter Thomasin (Anya Taylor-Joy) of witchcraft. With the vast majority of the dialogue culled from primary sources from the time period. This film was really enjoyable to watch. I have seen it 4 times. It is worth repeated viewings.

Great filmmaking, but not for everyone

This isn't your run of the mill, jump-scare horror film, this is a slow-burning mediation of a family being ripped apart not only from external forces, but internally as well. In that sense, this movie is a distant relative of Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, but it is more deliberate and the horror comes more from a seeping feeling of dread as the isolation and supernatural forces at work fracture the family apart. There are moments that are shocking and may be too much for some people, and the pace may not be what many contemporary fans of horror have come to expect, but this is powerful filmmaking and deserves to be seen.

This is a very well made horror film. The acting is amazing. You could say this movie is sort of a time period piece. It explores the real fears of people living at that point in time. This movie is a SLOW BURNER, but is loaded with tension. It is not filled with cheap jump scares like most hollywood horror films are. If you like a smart, well acted, tension filled movie, this is for you.

    Smart. Creepy. Gripping

The Witch is a smart dark and gritty horror film. Not one for jump scares and can be slow. But it's original and is a wonderful period piece.

Dark and disturbing. This is the first movie from Robert Eggers and is unforgettable. The language is quite different from modern English but it adds to the authenticity. Highly recommended to arty horror fans.

    A true modern horror masterpiece

I went into this movie knowing the bare minimum, which I prefer with most films. It is your classic horror film--creepy, dreadful, eerie and mysterious. It's definitely not an up-in-your-face/jump scare kind of film. Much more thought out and atmospheric. The end is terrifyingly satisfying. Definitely worth multiple viewings!

Just recently purchased the blu-ray, and it's great. The blu-ray has a commentary track which I suggest checking out as well. The Witch is so far and probably will be the best film of 2016...great atmosphere, incredibly creepy, amazing score, great performances, it is a near perfect period piece. Would highly recommend picking it up on blu-ray.

    Unnerving and Cerebral Horror

A pleasantly surprising Supernatural Horror film from 2015. Part historical period piece and horror combined. While not a horror film in the sense of jump scares, the horror here slowly crawls under your skin as you witness a Puritan family go completely mad from 'something.'

This movie is highly stylized. The trailer perfectly sets the tone and if that's piqued your interest, the movie is fantastic if you're into the genre. This "New England Folktale" is one that will stay with you long after the credits roll!

Couldn't understand what the heck they were saying. It got scary towards the end but I had to watch a couple of times to understand the language back then lol.
