Are witches real? The Witch seems to make the case that if witches and demonic possession of animals are an essential part of your beliefs, then maybe. It's jarring to see the demise of this loving though eccentric family because their thinking allows only God's wrath at their sins as an explanation for the calamities that befall them. The cast was excellent, in particular the young actors Anya Taylor-Joy and Harvey Scrimshaw.

This is a very well filmed ,acted and designed period horror film.Be warned it is not a typical horror film, more like a horror drama. The trailers for this film where misleading and people where not happy with actual seeing it.This led to some bad reviews ,don't want to give away any plot points but it is slow moving. This reminds me of late sixties/early seventies film like "The Wicker Man" ,if you like those give this a try.

If you came in with hype... beware

The best way I can describe this film is if you went to see Sam Raimi's SPIDER-MAN and the movie ended when he puts on his actual final Spider-Man costume. I paid to see Spider-Man, so that's where my disappointment with THE WITCH comes from. Yes, this is an origin story and that's where my disappointment lies because the film ended right when I thought it had finally started to kick butt. Spoiler Alert: the horror is real, and any of the graphic horror scenes shown are terrific for horror fans and are truly visceral and memorable, but having come in with all the hype I expected a terrifying experience. But the film doesn't offer any moments of tension or suspense. It is a family drama first and foremost and that's a good strength and an intelligent strength as it examines how , a force can manipulate us when we are in a particular situation, and how we can succumb to evil even if our intentions were always what we thought were best. I would still say this is a must-see for horror fans, it is a film worth discussing afterwards and I know I will watch it many more times. With my expectations diminished, it'll surely be more enjoyable because the production value and acting are all top notch.

To start with, the movie is very aesthetically pleasing. The acting is solid. The twins are creepy as h e ll. The movie plays on paranoia effectively while maintaining an actual real threat. The last 20 minutes provide some great payoff for the earlier slower pace of the film and contain some truly gruesome imagery. For horror fans who prefer a story and a build up, not so much for the Paranormal Activity type crowd.

    Dark Tale of Witchcraft

This is a dark - and sad - story of a 16th century family living on the outskirts of a country side in Old England, scratching a living from the land. The entire family succumbs to their own superstition - and the apparent truth - of witchcraft. The story is great, but the sound pickup of their voices could have been better, especially because the script has them speaking in an earlier form of English, so that, in combination with the less than ideal voice pickup, can make it a bit of a challenge to understand their speech. This is not a blood and gore type horror story, but rather a sophisticated and matter-of-fact retelling depiction of true events from records from the 16h century. It's a bit slow at first, but it gets more interesting as it goes on. It's kind of an Art Film, so you may or may not like it. But it's definitely engaging and unique, and a film you will not easily forget..

Turn the sound and your tolerance for ambiguity up before watching. Because of the dialect and the sound recording, it's not always easy to be sure what the characters are saying. Nor is the point of the film, if you are looking for a simple, straight-forward message. But the cinematography and the atmosphere it creates are superb, and the film will have you thinking about it long after the credits roll.

This movie is not your typical horror film. It doesn't have a lot of scary, jumpy parts in it. But it is scary in a disturbing way. The filming and acting are excellent in this. Movie is kinda short, but probably for the best as if it were any longer it would be dragging out. Definitely worth a watch first before you buy. Excellent movie to add to my collection for scary movies, especially during Halloween time!

Not the latest teen slasher, though I like those too. This one just builds the dread, heavier and heavier, until an explosive climax. Well worth you time, and better than the theater (where the picture was too dark). You can also have time to catch up to the speech patterns (or cheat with the the subtitles, which I did). Regardless, it merits many watchings with more to find each time. Decent extras too.

An atmospheric suspense mystery lurks at every turn. Living as outcasts and surrounded by an eerie forest, a family of five soon become their own worst enemy when the couples youngest mysteriously disappears. After accusations of the oldest daughter being a witch and being blamed for the disappearance of her younger sibling, all hope begins to collapse.
