Apatow flavor lacking some spice
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Unlike other reviews, I'm someone who enjoys his films and not someone who goes out and watches every one he makes, even though I've never enjoyed one. I'm sorry to start out this way, but I'm very bitter about a previous reviewer. If you have never liked his work, why even bother? Anyway... I'm a huge Apatow fan, but I can't give this 5 stars. It brought together all of the elements I love in his films, yet lacked a little in each area. The casting is still the same old and I'm fine with that. The humor is more of the same, as well. Basically, it's all the same and that's why I can't quite love it as much as I'd hoped. To sum it up, it was a bit bland. The jokes were great, but never super laugh out loud funny that I expect from his work or these actors. The plot was almost too simple, even if that's what he was going for. It's a film, so it needs more drams, even if the subject is supposed to relate to everyday people. I just wish he brought the gut-wrenching laughs from his previous work. I wish I was more drawn in to the characters and plot, even if I automatically had bias going into it. Maybe it's because I'm not 40 and can't relate myself. That's probably part of it, but it was still lacking that Apatow magic. Overall, I still enjoyed it, even after all of these minor setbacks. I would definitely recommend the film to Apatow fans. I would also recommend it to those who enjoy these styles of film. I would not, however, recommend it to someone who has seen his previous work and has never liked it. You're wasting your time and money and our time and money by reading your completely irrelevant reviews. I could probably guess that if you felt Funny People was lacking, you're going to enjoy this more. Obviously, it's a guess. I'm not an expert or mind-reader.

Great comedy to watch with your significant other
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. My wife and I watched this movie the other night. We're both fans of Judd Apatow's previous works. My wife just turned 30 this year, and her turning the big 3-0, well, it was a sensitive topic to say the least, so this movie had a lot of real life comedy for us. Leslie Mann and Paul Rudd are great together. The young ladies who played their children (Judd Apaptow and Leslie Mann's real life children by the way) were great in their own right given their limited acting experience. The only complaint was not enough Albert Brooks or John Lithgow. Especially Lithgow. His initial encounter with his daughter (Mann), which was intentionally awkward, was very fun to watch. The growth in the relationships between Lithgow/Mann and Brooks/Rudd was great to watch. I wish it had been explored more. And it would have been great to see John and Albert banter some more. Overall this was a very enjoyable movie to watch with my wife, which was what I was looking for. My wife loved and, and as they say, happy wife=happy life.

Good Comedy with a few flaws. Great PQ
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is 40 directed by Judd Apatow is a pretty solid comedy. It has its hits and misses but mostly for me it hit. Don't go in expecting Knocked Up or The 40 Year Old Virgin laugh out loud comedy. It has its moments, but honestly its more of a dramedy then an all out laugh fest. Personally I am a fan of Paul Rudd so if you like him you should love this movie. I would atleast recommend a rental, but if you liked Funny People, then a buy wouldn't be out of the question. The movie tends to be about 20 minutes too long, but that wasn't a HUGE issue for me like in some reviews, but I do agree it was a tad bit too long. Overall though I enjoyed the movie enough to buy it!

Funny movie, accurate portrayal of life.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Funny movie with a lot of true points, but a little hard on the profane side, even though it is realistic in a comedic fashion, seeing kids swearing worse than a sailor does not make a funny movie. A lot of points can be made without the grotesque, it will appeal to the majority but don't let your kids watch it, they probably won't understand it anyways. It was really funny and had some touching parts. Overall a 4 out of 5 in enjoyment.

Even funnier at home!!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. So this is the kinda sequel to Knocked Up. The Wife and I enjoy all of Apatow's films. This film is a tad on the long side and drags a little towards the end. The funny parts were ridiculously funny though!. I think I enjoyed it a little more than the wife did. The only thing we thought was weird was that we felt that Katherine Heigl and Seth Rogen should have made at least a cameo.

Funny "sequel" to Knocked Up
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Judd Apatow bounces back after the not-so-great Funny People and delivers another winner with This is 40. Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann reprise their roles from Knocked Up and deliver a hilarious look at what it's like turning 40 in today's world.

Only for Apatow fans
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. What are the expectations you have for yourself? Successful career, comfortable home, happy family? What if all of that were in jeopardy and had no way to save it? What would you do? Pete and Debi (who we were first semi-introduced to in the 2007 film Knocked Up and played again by Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann) are married, have two children, and both own their own businesses. Pete (Rudd) has left a major record label to open his own independent label where he can work with musicians he’s passionate about. Debi (played by Leslie Mann) owns and operates her own clothing store with two employees. Those employees are Jodi (played by Charlene Yi) who Deb considers a friend and a valued employee, and Desi (played by Megan Fox) who may or may not be stealing from the store but, with the huge influx of male shoppers thanks to her looks, those losses might be inconsequential. Pete is trying to drum up major public interest in a reunion album for a group that has great meaning to Pete personally but who’s never been particularly well-known. At the same time, Pete and Debi are both turning 40 within days of each other. Their two daughters, Sadie and Charlotte (played by director Apatow and lead actress Leslie Mann’s real-life daughters Maude and Iris Apatow) fight constantly. In addition, Sadie, Pete and Debi’s 13 year-old (played by Maude Apatow) has developed an unhealthy obsession with Lost. To add even more fuel to the fire, Pete has been loaning money to his father, Larry (played by Albert Brooks), in secret. In contrast, Debi and her father, Oliver (played by John Lithgow) rarely speak. I didn’t really enjoy This is 40 that much. I have never been a big fan of Apatow’s other films. They always seem to go for the gross-out factor and I have a low-tolerance for that type of humor. Also, there seems to be some sort of revelation every half-hour in this movie. “I don’t know what we’re going to do” and then twenty minutes later “we’re all going to be okay”. Apatow fans might enjoy this movie, I most definitely did not. I don’t recommend This is 40.

This is 40 is fantastic!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Written and directed by Judd Apatow, This is 40 is a true and down to earth look at the trials of turning 40. Even being in my 30's I related to so many things in this film, both the hilarious and the depressing. If you liked Judd's previous films, you'll love This is 40!

More like Funny People than Knocked Up
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If you liked Funny People, chances are you will like this one. It's not as outrageous as Knocked up, but still has it's moments. Apatow fans should stillbe pleased with this one.

Funny and sad at the same time
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I thought that this movie would have been much better without the language and if you would not have ben lead to believe it was a comedy, it is but I would say almost a dark comedy.

Good movie
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Its a good movie, everyone would enjoy watching. It wasn't a none stop laugh movie but it had its times. Maybe one of those movies to wait till it goes on sale.

The sort of sequel to Knocked Up
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This movie is terrific. The movie is worth every penny just to see Paul Rudd's character use the witless husband trope throughout the movie. No new ground is covered in the movie but what it does, it does well.

Funny movie, even funnier on Blu-Ray
