They get in the way when zipping up. Very sturdy. My toddler threw the case (fortunately without the laptop in it) down the stairs and it shows no signs of damage.

Great sleeve, not quite fits 16"

I'd argue it barely doesn't fit as I can't get one size completely zipped. That said, it fits well enough and there isn't a 16" (at this time) yet available. But it's tight. Quality is great.
