You had better buy the extended warranty

I bought this drive to store home videos while converting them from VHS/8mm . I had read these reviews and while i noticed the negative reviews i decided that the price outweighed the risk. So, after loading 1 TB worth of videos (3weeks worth of work) i come home to be greeted with a "this drive is unreadable" error. Luckily i still have the originals to go back and start over. I learned a lesson with this... You get what you pay for... My advice, keep looking and let this one collect dust on the Best Buy shelves...

Didn't work for more than a day

If you order this make sure you check that it is working ASAP. I ordered one at a school, I recieved it after Best Buy's 15 day return policy. When I got it out and set it up it worked for about a day and now all it does is click and beep. When I try to return it to Toshiba they want me to pay to ship it back to them and they want to charge my credit card $225, to ensure that it is returned. Hopefully the second one is better than the first. I would not recommend this product.

HD works, but not with Win7

Buyer beware! Drives this large do not work with Windows 7 and the windows backup utility. Western Digital has a fix for their drives, but not Toshiba.

I bough this HD as a backup for pictures and videos. This HD worked great for the first 16 months i had it. Now, it isn't even recognized by the computer. Stay away and spend a little more money. Hopefully i can get the stuff back somehow through recovery.

    Nice drive, but loud.

This drive sounds like a jet engine. Turned it on and and 5 minutes later it's going right back to the store. Spend the extra $20 for a quiet drive.

    Terrible HDD

So I'm sitting here trying to recover all my data. I had been moving it to my "new" 3TB so I could clean up the other drives to back it up cleanly. Well I took the 3TB HDD to work to backup master files from there. Get home it won't boot. 1 week later I still can't recover my data. I have 3 Seagate and several WD. My first and last ever toshiba.

    Failed after 2 months

The idea of having a backup storage is that it should be dependable. To get us back on track should the PC fail. But if the backup device dies within 2 months and takes with it all the data, then it's not something we should be spending our money on. Stay away from this unit.

    Junk. Plain and Simple

Just move along and buy something else. My Vista machine wouldn't re-boot when this thing was attached. When it was attached, it made my computer crawl. The user interface is clumsy and non-intuitive. There are better products out there. I am a firm believer in you get what you pay for - too bad I didn't heed my own belief when I bought this drive. It went back to the store yesterday.

    Unreliable - I/O Errors

Drive began getting I/O errors that affected write performance and finally caused backup software to abort. Unreliable. Going to a different vendor.

    First Impression Not So Great

It's not a very good impression when you buy it and it never powers on. Not a very good time to manufacture a defective one. I saw that it was a very good price for me, so I went for it, and didn't work out. Paid another $15 to get a brand that I have had luck with and that hard drive works like a champ.
