Phone with no service or number

I followed the activation process on the Tracfone website exactly (opting to not port a number because I know that is an absolute mess) and it seemed like my phone was activated. When I checked in settings it said my phone number was unknown. I tried to call a friend and received an operator response saying I was roaming and to place a collect call (hadn't even left the zip code I bought the sim card in). I called the tracfone service number from another phone and they said to "wait a bit while a number is assigned to your sim". At this point I figure it is best to cut my loses since I have no interest in wasting several hours to get a third rate phone service working. Now a week later still can't make calls, the 60 minutes have been "redeemed" to a phone with no number and I have moved on to a better service provider. BUYER BE WARNED!
