This was a lot more fun that I expected it to be! I did go into this a bit cynical, but this is one of Pixar’s better movies.

The movie itself is great! The bonus features are great as well. I also think it's pretty awesome that first printings come in a red case. Overall, a nice release!

THIS MOVIE WAS ABOUT A THIRTEEN YEAR OLD GIRL, LEARNING TO LIKE HER INDEPENDENCE AND TAKE CHARGE OF HER LIFE. SHE HAS A GROUP OF BEST GIRLFRIENDS. AND THEY DO EVERYTHING, TOGETHER. BUT IN EVERY CHILD'S LIFE, THEY USUALLY LOOK UP TO ONE OR BOTH, PARENTS. IN THIS GIRL'S LIFE, BOTH OF HER PARENTS, WERE ROLE MODELS. AND SHE LOVED AND LOOKED UP TO BOTH PARENTS. THIRTEEN IS A SPECIAL YEAR, FOR A GIRL. SHE WANTS TO DO EVERYTHING HER SELF, AT THIS AGE. ONLY PROBLEM WITH THIS DEMAND, IS HER, OVERBEARING MOM. WHO LOVES HER ONLY DAUGHTER. AND WANTS TO FIX, EVERYTHING IN DAUGHTER LIFE. THE MOM DOES NOT ASK HER DAUGHTER. DO YOU NEED HELP? THE MOM JUST BARGES IN, AND DOES, AS SHE PLEASES, WITH NO REGARD TO HER DAUGHTER FEELING. THIS FAMILY IS SPECIAL, BECAUSE OF THE WOMEN IN THIS PARTICULAR, FAMILY. AND THE DAUGHTER, LEARNS OF HER POWER, THE HARD WAY. NOW THE MOVIE, BEGINS. I WAS LAUGHING, ALL THE WAY, THROUGH THIS MOVIE. THIS WAS, A REAL, FEEL GOOD, MOVIE. BRAVO TO THE ACTORS AND ACTRESSES OF THIS MOVIE. KUDOS TO THE DIRECTOR OF THIS MOVIE AND ALL THE PEOPLE WHO HELPED BRING THIS MOVIE TO THE SCREEN. PEACE!

Mei Lee is 13. She lives in the Chinese community of multi-ethnic Toronto. She and three friends are a tight, supportive group in and outside middle school. Mei Lee is also heir to her family’s inheritance of female members turning into giant red pandas in times of stress. And being 13 is very stressful! So are her mother’s expectations, including responsibilities at the tourist attraction family temple. And then there are $200 tickets for a forthcoming boy band concert at the Toronto Skydome. (By the way, “giant” means kaiju type giant. Her mother could face Godzilla on equal terms.) Pixar delightfully navigates Mei Lee learning to cope. The Chinese context is thoroughly researched, but also adapted to Toronto. (I particularly liked the Sikh security guard enthusiastically shop lifting one of Mei Lee’s mother’s filled dumplings.). It is also surprisingly satisfying seeing Toronto trashed in a kaiju battle. One word of warning. This is not Pixar!traditional animation. It is much closer to “Sailor Moon” than to “Toy Story.” It is also more entertaining than anything Pixar has done since “Incredibles 2.” I highly recommend it.

It is a solid addition to the Pixar library, but I do not think I will rewatch it for at least a year.
