Adapter did what was needed.

I had the original Pencil which came with a lightning version of this but clearly it wasn't just about the connector -- tried with a USB-C to lightning cable but nevertheless that one never worked. This one must have had something else in there because it instantly worked. Not sure how often one would use this - I'm guessing very seldom. Try to get it on sale if possible. I got mine for a couple bucks off sale.
