Good TV but one disappointing limitation

I'd done a bit of research before purchasing this television. I'd actually decided on the P55 rather than the M55 but my local store didn't carry the P55. After speaking with the sales team member my wife and I decided that the lower refresh rate, lower clear action rating & lower active zones was an acceptable compromise for the lower price. The one feature that we were not willing to sacrifice was HDR. Being a gamer I wanted to be sure that I'd get the best video quality that I could out of both my Xbox One S and PlayStation 4. After setting up the television I was unable to get HDR to work on either console. It was very frustrating. After a night of sleep I decided to tackle it again. I'd connected my cable box to the HDMI port and the console to the others originally. I decided that maybe I'd shuffle to connections around and see if that solved the issue. Sure enough, after connecting the Xbox to the HDMI port I was able to get HDR to work, after enabling the HDMI subsampling, but I was still unable to get the playstation to work in HDR. After doing more research it seems that the M55 only allows for HDR on the HDMI-1 port. For my needs, this isn't acceptable. I'll be exchanging the M55 for the P55. If you're looking for the best option for HDR, I'd go with the P55. If HDR is less of a concern for you then I would recommend the M55. It's a great value with a good picture. One caveat, the software update process takes forever!

Bought one of these and had issues with my Verizion Fios box with sound and finally got that sorted out. Had a few pixels that were dead on the screen, called Vizio customer support and they were a dream to talk to. Ended up returning since I couldn't wait and purchased a Samsunk k6300 series and the picture was nowhere near as nice, could never get it set just right and the settings dropped everytime I turned the t.v on and off. Returned that t.v and gave Vizio another shot. Second t.v looks amazing, calibrated the picture settings from Rtings.com and the picture now blows me away. With the update 4k content is amazing. Connecting the set to the internet was a breeze and no issues there. I was unsure at first with the t.v itself not having the smart features built in but now I am actually happy with it since it is all phone or tablet based I don't really have to worry about the smart hardware becoming out of date as the tablet itself or phone will support updates for the long haul. Connected easy to my Vizio 5.1 sound bar surround sound setup and my fios remote. Glad to have dropped the amount of remotes we used to have to use to control everything from 5 down to one. With it being backlit the blacks are truly black and color is stunning. 4k from Netflix and other apps looks like you are there and stunningly clear. Had to run out and get a Xbox One S to take advantage of the 4k gaming. I am having the screen cut out issues and color issues with Forza Horizon 3 which is the first true 4k game. Called Vizio back up and they are aware of the problem, and are working fast on a software update on their end as well to fix it. I also called Microsoft and the issue is not only with some Vizio models but on some LG and Samsung t.v's as well and they are working on a patch. Per some forums and Vizio tech confirming the Xbox runs on slightly lower settings than the t.v is capable of but the update should be coming very soon from them and an update as well from Microsoft. I would recommend if you're in the market for a reasonably priced 4k set to run out and grab one of these, you will get alot more than you paid for with the picture equaling sets that cost way more until you get into the OLED technology.

Among the many LED 4K displays available from different manufacturers, a large percentage of them are edge-lit (which means the light that illuminates the screen comes from the edges or borders) and thus exhibit less-than-stellar black levels and brightness as a result. This display is not one of those. It uses LEDs arranged in a grid or matrix behind the entirety of the screen that will change brightness according to what's happening on screen. This means if a portion of the screen is displaying something dark like a night sky then the LEDs behind that portion will turn way down or even off which results in absolutely phenomenal black levels. With a professionally measured black performance of 0.018 cd/m2 you will not get better performance from a display outside of super-expensive OLED displays that exhibit 0 cd/m2. In fact, this display shares very nearly the same black level performance (0.003 cd/m2 difference) and contrast ratio as the significantly more expensive Samsung KS9500 series! If you're looking for the absolute best picture without spending the big bucks, you really can't do any better. This monitor (no tv tuner) is an absolute bargain. in order of best features; Does absolute blacks. try watching "Blade Runner" Picture quality is incredible. if you can't afford an LG OLED, get this. Blue-rays look better than I have ever experienced. 4K Netflix content is just wow. watch the 1st episode of Blacklist for a real WOW! every source I have connectedlooks better than past experience includingAmazon Fire stick, Apple TV and my OPPO Blue-ray player. Built in streeming is fast and has a good buffer to solve most HULU streaming issues. Negatives; Sound could be better, at least a soundbar will be needed. Tablet remote is nice but a larger version would help old eyes. tablet could use more memory. Bluetooth does not connect to headphones. hopefully a software upgrade will fix. Bottom line; as this is the second 4K TV in our house, it is night and day better than previous. 4K content looks better than 1080P but everything looks better. Sports, Blue-rays (have not used a DVD) and streaming exceed our expectations. Past video displays we have owned always had something that was at least a minor annoyance including Plasma, Rear projection and front projection. and Blacks are really black. LED backlighting shows no blooming and the local zones are not noticeable in any content. Best feature is the price, as they are coming out with new version, we got a great deal.

Of course there's problems but picture quality...

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

So before I get into the picture quality let's discuss the elephant in the room. The tablet remote and software for it is horrible. Despite updating the software and the unnecessary tie-in to google accounts, it still cannot cast from the tablet. On top of that the picture controls are horrendously slow, you can slide for a greater or lower setting but it takes way to long to pass the value you're looking for into the controller... What surprised me from the casting functionality was that I was able to cast from my laptop and my desktop several rooms over, but not the remote tablet... The HDMI labels for the TV are labeled as [BEST] and [ARC], the manual provided fails to site "in words" what these are. Assuming one is 4K hdmi option and the other I had to look up; which is for something for a separate sound system. Playstation 3 is not compatible with any of the TV's hdmi ports in 1080p. The 1080i and 720p options sorta work but not with out a lot of static or flickering in-between. The only stable option is the 480p in hdmi... Strangely enough my laptop is only capable of producing a 1080p resolution but worked fine in the [BEST] HDMI port. Now that I have address issues, lets talk picture quality. When it works in 4k or even 2k, the picture quality is great. Shadows look clean, colors are great, overall sharpness is nice. Dipping into lower resolutions you start noticing the LED panel in the back as some of the lighter parts of the scenes have this "haze" or lighten fog/aura around them. Most likely because it's hard for the TV to discern lit areas of the movie appropriately by this point in low resolution. The built in sound system is not great as there is no lows or has no good bass and during a movie, we change the sound setting past 50 to hear the dialog at some point. I still haven't tried 4k bluray player or an up-scaler but seeing from the previous video casts. The quality I already know looks great, but unfortunately there's the question of compatibility with players now because a normal Sony bluray player failed to work correctly as well as the PS3. It maybe a firmware or encoding issue but this is a really bothersome in terms of usability. You don't want a TV that can't even accept normal 1080p standard players which is still a majority. If you already have a 4k player, or something along the lines of a computer capable of playing HD then this a decent option but there are better TV's in this price range.

Love Visio, some issues with Xbox one s

    Posted .

I have been a lifelong fan of Vizios product, however much like another review I read I am having some problems with my xbox one s with this tv. I have it plugged in to hdmi 1(which is the only one that supports 4K HDR) and randomly the picture goes to either a black screen and comes back, or goes to a snowy screen and stays there until I either turn subsampling off and on again or cycle through the inputs back to hdmi 1. This happens the most while watching Netflix, Hulu and UHD blurays. my Xbox has no issues in other hdmi inputs but I can't take full advantage of the tv with it plugged into them. I'm hoping this is just a problem with HDR and 4K still being relatively new. I did call there customer support they had me reset the tv, then suggested I call Microsoft. It's my hope this is just fixed in a firmware update soon. I must say though when it's working this tv looks amazing

    Great 4k Tv

Tv is a great 4k option at a reasonable price. Paid $700 for it and that is the going price everywhere for it, but chose Best Buy in order to get reward points. Using the tablet to control the TV is a little different however I have a surround sound system and a Blu-ray player with plenty of apps so I rarely ever use it. Though it is neat to be able to cast things from your phone or tablet straight to the TV. I did some heavy the viewing of 4K TVs as there is a lot of junk out there for sale. I recommend us the site Rtings dot com to see what fits your requirements and budget. The Vizio M series is a great product and is only surpassed by their own P series.

    Reasonable 4K Goodness

Decent 4K picture. The colors out of the box is OK but you can always calibrate to your liking. The tablet remote is different but functional (if you know how Google cast works). HDR is good. Dolby Vision is great. I don't have an XBOS so I do not see the problems others are having regarding HDR. There are other better TVs out there but for the money, this one takes the cake. Has all the latest features, ample connections as far as HDMI and USB etc...I'm content with this purchase.

    Close To Perfection

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I must say that I have bought many Vizio products as well as other brands in recent years. This M55-d0 has a very good picture especially for the price. The colors are accurate and brightness and contrast are good as well. The fact that the set lacks a tuner does not bother me but the tablet remote does.I feel that this is the worst idea that Vizio has ever come up with and I'll bet that they revert back to their older system with future models. If you are far sighted like me, you better have your reading glasses close because you are going to need them. If it wasn't for this dumb idea I would call the tv close to perfection. It is a pain having more than one or two remotes to have to contend with. My tablet was bad and I was sent a new one by Vizio as soon as they received the defective one from me. They did send me a box and prepaid label to ship mine back. They would not send a new one until they received the other. The only way I was able to operate the tv was to download the Vizio app from the play store on my phone. This system to me is ridiculous. The other remote that comes with the set does only a few things. It's too bad it doesn't do everything like most other brand tv remote controls do. To me this system is terrible and not worth all the trouble. I do like the picture as I stated before but this tablet casting is for the birds. I indeed hope that no other companies follow suit and adopt this terrible system to control a tv set. The three stars are for the picture. The two lacking stars are for the casting method that you have to use for this set. I would not buy this set unless you don't mind not having all your menu items on the screen itself.

I had the 3D HDTV LCD 42" Vizio before I Chose to buy this television. I absolutely loved my other Vizio. This TV however I been having some recent problems with. But, it is important to note that I am not sure if it is my TV or the Xbox One S. Long story short, occasionally my screen went black and lost sound for a few seconds and would come back. I do think I corrected this issue on my Xbox One S by changing the Color Space back to 24 bit. Just recently though, I got a random static snowy screen on my television on 4k mode with HDR on. The only way I could get rid of the snowy image was to turn off my Xbox One. My guess is the two devices do not really know how to communicate with each other well yet..... I do love my Vizio products though so I am taking the risk that this is not a TV hardware problem. The most annoying thing was I could not seem to get my tablet "remote" for the longest time to pair correctly to the television. Eventually I got it to work. I am hoping Vizio sees this review and can perhaps give some insight on it. The picture quality is top notch, but the compatibility of the tv communicating with my other devices such as my Xbox One S I think is still kinda shaky at times.... Its for that reason I gave the review 3 stars.

I got this on a 24 hour sale for 799. I was going for the P series but this tv is an absolute steal at 800 and I could see spending 500 more for the P series. The tablet is kind of tedious to set up but you don't really need it. You can download the smart cast app on your phone and use that. I'm not a big fan of the smart cast thing..I'd rather have apps built in the tv but the tv is excellent as far as picture
