I have to power cycle the tv no less than once a day because the apps stop working. I think I'm going to have to buy another tv after I throw this one off my balcony.

I have always enjoyed Vizio's computer monitors and I have not been disappointed by this TV. If you are looking for a 4K TV with full array backlighting and Quantum Dot display but can't see paying $1000+, this is for you. Rich colors, deep blacks no pixelation around moving objects (Big beef about OLED), decent sound and plenty of inputs for all of your media sources. The screen is unobtrusive when off, not too glossy and no glare when using in brightly lit situations. One of the thinnest bezels around, 1/8" top and sides and @ 3/4" on the bottom. The stand is aluminum alloy and provides a secure but minimalist support for the unit. I have used the RF, Ethernet and HDMI inputs, all without issues. Soundbar's can be connected using the 1 HDMI(ARC) or optical DI to free up the HDMI for other inputs. I use the Ethernet connection for streaming so have not bothered trying Wi/FI or ChromeCast. TV supports the most common streaming companies, Netflix, Hulu, etc so there is no need for a Roku or other streaming interface. The remote is simple, straight forward and easy to use, unlike some of the ones from other companies that take a Master's degree to figure out. Definitely a winner from Vizio.

I really did. The description, features and specs made it sound like a winner. I'm basing my impression of the VISIO M Series to a comparison of my Sony XBR65X900E purchased in December 2017. That TV cost twice as much as the VISIO but going on 2 years old, I figured the newer technology of the VISIO would level the field. I used the Netflix loading screen as a visual aid to compare the two. The "N" was bright red on the Sony and the background was deep black. On the VISIO the N was orange and the background was grey but that was out of the box so I spent considerable time adjusting settings (with a pretty chintzy remote) and when I got the background to black and the "N" to red there was a noticeable bloom around the red logo. It wasn't a professional calibration by any means but I'm confident that it was as good as most "fairly tech-savy" home users would do. Motion wasn't supposed to be an issue but an NHL playoff game was noticeably jerky. I used the HDMI ARC connection to run the soundbar. That works as it should, powering a Sony soundbar on and off with the TV and displaying the volume level on screen. The pre-programmed app buttons make it easy to get to Netflix, Amazon and a few others but adding Youtube was a bit of a hassle. Other issues aside, my main complaint is that every single time I switch the TV input on the VISIO to HDMI 3 to watch the DirecTV receiver, or to HDMI 2 for the PS4, it starts SmartCast. This TV really, really wants to run SmartCast. I'll probably find a way around that but it's still an annoyance for now. Maybe my expectations were too high but with so many other TV's in the same price range I would assume there are better options.

Hello Kris, Thank you for the feedback. A few things that might help you get the kind of picture quality you are looking for. First, make sure the Display is getting a hi-definition or 4K signal. This means making sure that you're source device (like a cable/satellite box) is capable of HD or 4K, and that it's connected to your Display with an HDMI cable that can deliver the HD or 4K picture. You can also change between pre-set picture modes on the display by pressing the PIC button on your remote. This will toggle between a few picture setting that look good in different situations. If your display is in a bright room try Vivid or Calibrated. If it’s in a dimmer room try Calibrated Dark. Please contact our customer support at 877-878-4946 for assistance as the television should turn on to the last input you had on. VIZIO

Having owned this tv for quite some time, I’m happy to say that it’s served me well. Picture quality is outstanding for the price point, and while my LG oled definitely has it beat in the black levels department, the quantum dots on this tv sometimes leave me disappointed with the color reproduction on my much more expensive lg.

Had a Panasonic plasma for 9 years which I loved, so I wanted something that delivered deep blacks and vibrant colors. This TV does a pretty good job on that front. I first purchased a lower-end Samsung QLED model, and this one is far superior, for much lower price point. The one problem I have is that the sound will inexplicably cut out at random points, especially while watching Netflix, requiring me to back out of my show, or even the app, and go back in. Quite annoying.

+ The picture is great and especially HDR content looks stunning - The operating system crashes on a regular basis (Netflix, YouTube, AirPlay, e.g. just stop working randomly). Sometimes TV just turns off. Power cycling did not resolve the issue.

    Fair Review For TV Perfectionist

I felt I should write this for those who are seeing every other post, as if they never bought a $2K TV. I replaced the TV in my bedroom after lightning damage. I felt technology has dropped so much that any 4K TV woild be similar. Not so. I struggled with getting this or the TCL 6 series. Best Buy also through in the Hisense H9F to compare. I spent hours reading and visually comparing. I settled with the Vizio M-8 series (not M-7... read up) as I still have some of the first ever made and they still work for to this day. The problem I see at the 55" level is you can't hide as much vs a 32" or 42". For this 55", I'm comparing it to my 75" Samsung in the living room. This is not it. This is far from it. This Vizio is a "good" standard tv that you will probably notice limitations (if your TV savvy) that noone else can see. It's good. Im not returning it. My wife has no idea why I don't like it. It's not that. It's just not a Quantum P-Series. I think the P-Series is what I wanted but only wanted to pay the M-Series price for the bedroom. One other thing... I set up the Smartcast and then it never worked. I read online that you have to unplug the TV to reset it. It works fine now. We are gravitating to that instead of the FireStick because of ease of use. I gave this a 4 Star.

I have been a Vizio customer for a long time. Before owning my current M558-G1 4KTV, I owned a M502i-B1 1080p HDTV. I'm a fan of the M series as you can see. My 1080p HDTV has great picture quality and so does the M558-G1. Bought the M502i-B1, Spring 2015 and is still running, just sold it to a friend. Upgraded to the M558-G1 4KTV. But I have some issues with both. 1. The "Effective Refresh Rates" Vizio lists for both panels are a lie. M502i-B1 says 240Hz and M558-G1 says 120Hz. Great refresh rates you're thinking, wrong. Those are listed on every retailer website that I've seen selling these panels. Vizio needs to start listing the "Actual/Native Refresh Rates" and stop deceiving customers! I'm a gamer and a tech enthusiast, not once did my system info from the panels themselves, my PS4 or my home theater PC ever read 240Hz or 120Hz respectively on either panel. 60Hz is the maximum refresh rate I ever saw. 2. Smartcast needs to get better! This OS on both the M502i-B1 and the new M558-G1 is bad! Offering even fewer apps on the current Smartcast OS compared to the older version. More apps need to be added or at least make it easier to add/find compatible apps. Amazon Prime Video, Disney +, Tubi, etc...all work very poorly, hanging and crashing consistently! I load the apps with my PS4 or HTPC, no issues. Responsiveness of Smartcast on the main hub is slow, even with remote 3 feet from the screen! Possibly from not enough processing power to push pixels on the screen and run the OS at the same time...? It would be nice Vizio if you offered support or patch the older Smartcast systems as well. My older M502i-B1, the older Smartcast apps launcher, were pretty much useless after around 3 years. Used my PS4 and PC to watch TV and movies instead. 3. Bezels are a lie with these TVs. The actual thin bezel looks great but once you turn on the TV, another 1/4" border is introduced inside the bezel reducing screen real estate!...Please address these issues. It's getting frustrating since I paid around $650 for M502i-B1 back in 2015 and $500 for the M558-G1 back in Spring 2020. Vizio has the picture quality to compete with other brands but need some work in other areas to step up to the true big leagues.

      Hello Steveo,

The native refresh rate does NOT fully describe the TV’s motion clarity technology. The “open cell” or “native” refresh rate describes only the glass panel’s ability to refresh the image on the screen, without taking into account the benefit of the scanning backlight. The “native” refresh rate for your TV is 60Hz. VIZIO’s TVs have an Effective Refresh Rate, which better describes the TV’s ability to achieve motion clarity through the use of its glass panel and scanning backlight. The Effective Refresh Rate of this TV is 120. VIZIO

Good TV with some annoying drawbacks

This is my first 4k TV with HDR and also my first Vizio. Pros: - The picture is fantastic for the price. Colors are vibrant and contrast is good for a non OLED tv. - Comes with built in Chromecast support and its own OS to use Netflix, Amazon, etc. A lot of apps are supported too. - Can do Dolby Atmos, Dolby vision, CEC, the upscaling looks great too. Cons: - Unfortunately, the OS included is clunky and very slow to use. Ended up immediately using a fire stick to replace it. - Sound is whatever so I just ended up getting a sound bar to fix that issue. - Chromecast seems very finicky. Half the time my phone and other devices just don't want to cast to the tv for some reason. Don't have this issue with anything else. - Initially the TV would just randomly turn itself on, for no reason. Did a factory reset and that seemed to fix the issue. - My BIGGEST problem is a random horizontal line issue I'm having with the TV. Every few minutes, horizontal lines will randomly flash somewhere on the screen. They're very distracting and ruin whatever I'm immersed in. This started occurring a month after I bought the tv, conveniently outside of the Bestbuy return window. I fixed it before by performing a factory reset. Now it's back for the second time. This issue seems to be prominent enough after searching through a bunch of forums, but no fix was ever found. Seems like a software issue if anything. Conclusion: The TV is great when it works, but I fear there could be a problem with some of the panels without a clear fix. In its current state, I would just skip it. I wish I ended up with another brand instead and purchasing through Costco for a larger return window.

One of the main things I don’t care for with Vizio is how the materials used for the tv and stand feels like they’re made with cheaper materials. Maybe that’s used to keep costs lower than other brands. Some of the other competitors design are on another level but nevertheless this is a nice television. The preset viewing options are pretty good and will not have you fiddling with the picture. The TV set identifies the product you’re connecting via hdmi automatically which is a nice feature. To me this television is average and nothing really set it apart from other TVs in this price range. If you don’t care about specs and want a decent 55 inch tv then you can’t go wrong. Especially with the price.

Let me tell you a thing upfront . I bought this TV after waiting for months for its launch. Black level is outstanding. Rtings shows black level rating as 9.7 , probably the closest to OLEDs of Samsung or LG and you have to see a movie at night to believe the deep blacks. Smartcast has improved way better compared to previous versions. Casting videos is actually faster and I am fine with it. Only the very first time when you setup Netflix or YouTube etc. You might think it's slow to open up. But subsequent times its definitely better through remote or Google assistant. Next to the colors - I watched Mougli with Dolby Vision , Spiderman Into the Spiderverse on Netflix and Mad Max Fury Road Bluray. Colors were absolutely fantastic with so much detail popping out especially into the spiderverse (those brilliant night shots of city) . Only downside maybe it might get too brighter with colors . So you might want to calibrate your settings properly, test different videos and arrive at a final setting. Sound with inbuilt speakers is decent though you should get a soundbar. For Gamers , it's pretty good and has 2nd lowest input lag outside of Sony X950G as far I have checked. Best buy had 30$ discount as well apart from its 599 $ price tag. For value this is worth for the money you spend and if you can adjust and get used to smartcast rather than spending 2k for OLED at this time. Make sure you get M8 (M558-G1) rather than M7. You wont be disappointed. I tested LG SM8600 and returned it based on some reviews and it was real bad with edge bleeding (sort of white lights popping out from corner) and definitely not worth for 300$ extra money you spend. But if you are not liking Vizio and want to go for next level tv (brand conscious) which has 120Hz refresh rate , eARC support , IMAX enhanced format and a little less black level compared to Vizio M8 (8.1 rtings rating vs Vizio 9.7), go for Sony X950G. That TV is best in Sony catalog outside of OLED. Value wise, cant beat Vizio for picture quality . Hands down. Save now , get a OLED later. Note - Vizio has been updating smartcast I believe . It has got a bit faster and smooth. So maybe they can absolutely get rid of that slight clumsy experience in the UI.
