The Wrong TV for Standard 1080p

I agonized for a long time about spending so much money on a TV, when I really don't have time to sit down and watch 4k movies and I'm not a gamer. I pretty much just watch live sports and documentaries on DirecTV, which doesn't seem to have much 4k programming. But this was on sale, and I've had really good luck with Vizios before, from 32" to 55", so I went for it - and I'm regretting it. Using the preset picture choices (e.g, "Bright," "Calibrated," "Calibrated Dark"), the colors are either very washed out or ridiculously exaggerated. I tried playing around with the settings, but nothing really helped. I just want it to look like my 55" - only bigger. Is that an impossibility with 1080p sources? Should I get a cheaper, non-4k TV that handles lower quality sources better? I was hoping to "future-proof" this purchase, but at the moment, it's just not enjoyable to watch with the picture quality so bad (the worst quality seems to be movies on 1080p channels - lots of what is apparently called "blooming" and lots of pixelation). Are other TVs that are more expensive (e.g., Sony, Samsung) better at handling standard HD, 1080p (i.e., non-4k/HDR/UHD) sources. I'm sorry if I've gotten the terminology wrong or am misunderstanding the whole 4k thing. I just want a TV that looks as good as all five of my other Vizios when I turn it on. Too much to ask for a 75"?

    Vibrant VIZIO

I am pleased with the VIZIO - 75" Class P-Series Quantum X Series LED 4K UHD SmartCast TV. Not only am I pleased, but my wife is also impressed with the TV, which in the grand scheme makes this an ultimate winner. Picking the right television, is no easy task. Brand plays a role in personal decisions, television size plays a role, budget plays a substantial role then type, resolution, smart enabled, and so many other options. I believe there will never simply be the “best” television; however, one can find a stellar television for their situation. First, this television is a VIZIO. I purchased my first VIZIO television back in 2009, prior to attending college. There was a fabulous deal and almost everyone I knew who was preparing for dorm life got the same television, and well, now I am married with TWO of this television (because my wife still owned hers and neither of ours died!). The life of VIZIO televisions has not let me down, so the brand investment in this case spoke for itself, and this television has not disappointed yet. The size (with subsequent performance) of a television is key. First, if you do not have a room and viewing space that is compatible for a 75” television, keep it smaller. Larger is not always better, in the realm of televisions. This 75” is absolutely SLEEK. I have this TV mounted to the wall using a swiveling mount, and even with the mount included the profile off the wall is 8” total. There is minimal edge along the TV screen, allowing the full screen display of an image to fill almost up to the edge, minimizing underutilized space. Also, the VIZIO logo itself for this TV is a small “V” symbol in the bottom right is and practically unnoticeable unless looking for it. All in all, a fabulous, sleek presentation. Further looking at presentation of the TV, the cord situation is probably my least favorite aspect of the television. The power cable, is a simple standard cable; however, the included cable is short. The power cable is on the left of the TV (if looking head on), and the cable barely reached the ground from mounting. This is not a huge deal, but unless you happen to have the perfect setup, a new cord will be necessary length wise. The rest of the cord access points for the TV are on the right side of the TV (if looking head on). So, without any cable changes, by plugging in any device you will have cables coming from both sides of the TV. I plan to get a longer power cord, running it across the bottom of the TV, and then using a cable hider on the right side of the TV to manage this situation, as cables are not appealing. If this TV was not mounted, not as big of an issue though. With that, my previous TV had a control box, making it so only two cables (the control box and the power) came down from the TV; this TV does not, having all the hook-ups on the back of the TV, which I would consider standard but from a cable management standpoint a mess. Of course, you can always hide cables in the wall, but that is its own struggle but to each their own. The sound of the TV itself is adequate, a sound bar or other system is not necessary; however, if you have one, it is simple to toggle the sound output as necessary and it easy interfaces with any HDMI inputs to whatever output is selected (I use optical output). The optical hookup was a bit difficult to get the cord in place, but once inserted the switch was simple. There are 4, HDMI ports. Be aware of which ports are used for which devices. HDMI 1 is marked for eARC, which my previous TV actually did not have, causing me to use optic output for sound. Then HDMI 3 and 4 are HDMI Version 2.1 with 48Gbps data rate and 120fps supported, having the 2160@120fps, my Xbox One X is connected to HDMI 4. There is also USB2.0, component input (those still do exist), optical and white/red audio out, antenna connection, and Ethernet plug. The TV is also WiFi enabled, and can connect to 5.2GHz band. VIZIO lists the brightness as 2,800 nits (compared to 3,000 listed for the 65” and 85” models). I am not sure, what 200 difference makes, but it cannot be much. The brightness on this TV is absolutely incredible. To the point of the ability to becoming too bright. Obviously, brightness can be easily adjusted (which settings are EASY to change on this TV) if needed. The game setting automatically adjusts for gaming, and knocks the level down substantially to where I raised it some. This makes for watching TV during the day simple, even with normal glare and at night the picture pops! Next, with the brightness comes dark. This television is equipped with a full array backlight. With this full array backlight, the ability of the television to differentiate blacks is stunning. Various 4k shows through Netflix have been incredibly displayed, but the most impressive attempt at testing out the television came from a certain television show. This could have been an HBO show about a game with some thrones, that in their last season had a terribly dark episode that made people question their TVs and computer screens because it was horrible to visualize. And well, there is still a compression issue, where there are boxes being formed (I hope with Blu-ray version this compression issue will be fixed), but the actual visualization of the scenes was quite impressive on this television. My friend, who is in love with computer monitors and displays thought the black color for the episode was impressive regardless of the compression issues which do not do the episode or image justice. The darkness and color is further enhanced by content that uses HDR+ and Dolby Vision. I was able to have Netflix Dolby content and Xbox One X HDR content, the colors and ability of the television to differentiate is stunning. There is no blurring of images and also, even an over-the-top sky image of a group of penguins allowed for differentiation of each and every penguin as they moved around in a group. The other aspect of the TV is gaming. Being able to play a videogame system on 75” is quite incredible anyway, so having a TV designed for gaming is a fabulous draw for myself (going back to the idea of what each individual needs in their television). It has been a while that I’ve used my Xbox One X, but I wanted to give a few of my 4k/HDR games a try. First, when plugging in the Xbox One X and switching to that input, the TV actually spoke to the Xbox and the settings between the two were adjusted accordingly. This did make brightness setting low, but that was able to be quickly adjusted. The Xbox could tell that the TV was equipped with 4k and HDR abilities, and changed the settings accordingly (my previous setup was not). There is AMD FreeSync Premium with the TV, which VIZIO claims will provide seamless game play. And well, I can attest that so far, my gameplay has been seamless with stunning 4k graphics and impressive framerates with both COD and Forza. I have not had any issues as of yet. The auto game mode activated and provided the seamless gameplay as advertised. The Smart TV capabilities are through the VIZIO SmartCast. This interface is not my favorite, but has many of the commonly desired applications including Netflix, Disney+, and Hulu. I am disappointed that HBO Max is not supported through SmartCast; however, I was able to access this using the Xbox One X. The remote itself allows for quick buttons for Vudu, Netflix, Prime Video, Xumo, Hulu, and Redbox. There is a “Watchfree” area to the SmartCast, that I have yet to try out, but it does exist! As far as other Smart technologies the TV is Apple Play and Chromecast built in, and will work with Google, Siri, or Alexa. The setup for the Alexa is easily accessed and simple to initiate. A lovely side-feature that is not always included. Overall, the color of the TV does not disappoint. I feel this TV is one that while in the home with every day use, has vibrant colors just like when in the store on display (which often times, I feel does not happen). There is fantastic brightness, providing a pop while displaying 4K Ultra HD content. These impressive features carry over well into gaming with the Xbox One X and also facilitate beautiful home streaming using the SmartCast interface that may be controlled using smart home devise (Alexa in my case). This is a fantastic centerpiece to my living room.

We are happy with our purchase as this is our first Vizio TV after having our Samsung. The issues that were brought from other reviewers, fortunately we did not experience them with the latest firmware patch. Our installer also helped us perform multiple tests such as gray uniformity, local dimming, and color gradient. All performed well with no studder or dead pixels. The only slight complaint is the OS where it doesn't react as fast as others but the "smart" features are plentiful which makes the entire user experience an overall great value. Will get this calibrated down the road and lastly, highly recommend checking out the review/settings provided by the team at Rtings.

This is the second VIZIO 75" TV I have purchased. The first worked well but this one had a problem with the audio output so needed to return it. Will probably buy another LG OLED this time. VIZIO does not make an OLED in a 75" at this time but they do in a 65".

Also own an LG OLED 65 inch B8 tv from 2018. That LG actually has a better picture than this television but we were going purely for size and price on this purchase to get a 75" in the living room.

This TV sucks. Sure the picture is great. Almost everything overwhelms the processor and it just freezes. I’ve never had to unplug a TV more times in my life. Also for whatever reason the remote has a solid delay. When I turn down/up the volume it’s a full few seconds before anything happens. I don’t know what else to say other than the TV is too dumb to keep up with demands.

TV looks very good when calibrated by a pro. Very bad viewing angles. This is not a TV for someone used to OLED or critical of the picture. It can be calibrated to look perfect with a direct front view, any angle, it looks bad. It also has quite a bit of blooming in space scenes, again, fine if you don't care about deep blacks. The dimming zones help, but not in a complete black background with titles or any object. I would recommend getting the OLED for the same price and 10" smaller. For bright rooms and very minimal viewing angles it will be great.
