In places with hard water, the filter tends to need replacing more often. Samsung makes this filter specific for their refrigerator so you have no choice but to buy theirs.

The refrigerator's water filter light will let you know when those six months are up and should be reset after changing the filter. I had everything in and my refrigerator still said I needed to change the filter. After I went online I saw that I had missed hitting a reset button. Also, it wants you to waste an enormous amount of water to clean it out.
