Hello Mike, we understand your concerns and we appreciate the feedback. The water filter removes unwanted particles from your water. However, it does not sterilize or destroy microorganisms. You may need to purchase a water purifying system to do that. The water filter is used to reduce contaminants such as lead, mercury, and pharmaceuticals that may be present in water. I'm sorry to hear you don't find value in your water filter. Please note that the HAF-CIN filter is designed to filter up to 300 gallons of water, which would last for approximately 6 months in homes with average usage of the dispenser and ice maker. If yours isn't lasting that long, it's possible your water supply has higher than normal levels of minerals or debris, which could clog the filter prematurely. A plumber may be able to advise you on this, and whether you may benefit from a whole-house filtration system. If you do choose to install an external filtration system then it wouldn't be necessary to maintain the internal filter in your refrigerator; you could simply remove it and leave the cartridge housing empty. Please note, however, that Samsung doesn't recommend operating the water and ice features without an external or internal filter since the same mineral deposits could damage the refrigerator water lines over time.
