If you're looking to add edge to the way you game, while step your game up then the WD Black drive is it. I never understood how to make my gaming faster or while some of my laptops or desktops became slower as a few years passed. We downloaded some games with our gaming pass on the PC one of the older ones which was not as big Portal 2 which we had not played in a few years. Of course we had to load in some Fortnite and play a few rounds! The difference is immediately evident when downloading speeds came up. I even noticed some in game loading was a lot faster than those of my friends in my squads. Small details like the near and far aspects within the backgrounds and the ability to just load into the lobby area while my friends took a while to join me. The installation was actually kind of easy. I was totally intimated because the PC I just build last year was my first and the pandemic helped me push myself to tailor the PC to my wants. Adding the WD Black SSD card was something I wanted to spoil myself. There are so many games coming out this fall and winter that I want and having this on deck is going to help with not feeling like I have to compromise or remove games I love from my drives. Overall, I am a fan of how much quicker it made downloads and small details within the games. While I wish it game with a heat sink, it was not a big detractor for me. I am very pleased with the ease and effectiveness of the Western Digital SSD!

    Blazing PCIe 4.0 drive

The WD SN850x... This variant is a 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe drive and my oh my... is it fast... Using it as the OS drive in my Windows 11 desktop, it literally breezed through the Windows 11 image install within minutes (very impressive as it usually takes 5+ minutes on PCIe 3.0 NVMe drives & a bit longer or other SATA 3 SSDs). Using CrystalDiskMark to benchmark, the numbers were 6000+ MB/s for Q8T1 & 5000+ for Q1T1 for reads/writes. If these numbers don't make any sense to you, just know that it means blazing fast... I also tested this in my PS5 and got very similar results. This drive does not disappoint. Was getting 6000+ MB/s reads after installing it and performing a read test. Gaming from this drive rendered no issues and I usually play 3-4 hour sessions. No overheating issues, no visual issues when it came to the games (I play Fortnite, COD Vanguard, Apex Legends, Warzone, etc.). Performance here is top-notch, but just note that it does not come with a heat sink, so you'll have to buy one if you want it to maintain that performance and drive longevity! I currently have a pretty beefy aluminum heat sink mounted on it to help dissipate the heat and thus far, it's delivered the goods in terms of lightning speeds. I would highly recommend this drive as it is very good and more than capable for next gen gaming. If you happen to catch it on sale, it's definitely a bargain and worth the monies!

This drive is quite stupidly fast. I slapped this in to my laptop that has a PCI-E 4.0 and got to testing. I've got a couple different NVME drives in my computers. My main desktop uses a previous gen SN750 and despite only being a Gen 3 drive it's still plenty fast for my day to day, though it primarily serves as my boot drive. I've also got a 1TB Pro drive from another popular company in my PS5. The drive's speeds eclipse that drive by around 1-1.5Gb/s read/write and that one is around a similar price point. I'm quite impressed with speeds. It's incredibly responsive and helps hugely with content creation. Having this as a secondary drive and being able to take advantage of the Gen 4 speeds really makes a difference when streaming and recording said stream. The only real bottleneck there is the encoder, be it the nVenc in my laptop or the 12th Gen i7 pushing through and the interface with the USB type C of the capture device im using. I actually use it as a dual PC setup so the Desktop does the gaming and the laptop handles the stream. Being able to transfer at a consistent 1.5Gb/s for most data movement certainly makes me not miss old school mechanical drives. There's really no many cons to be had with the drive. Even without a heatsink the drive stayed around 60C in the laptop. Using the available heatsink from WD I imagine will keep things in even better check. I didn't notice any throttling after multiple benchmarks and even with recording for hours at a time. I think if I had to focus on one negative it would be the drive endurance. Sure the drive will probably outlast me, but even still, with so much reading and writing especially in a content creation scenario, you could very well exhaust the drive before the warranty is up. The 1TB drive is only rated for 600TBW which is only twice over my SN750. My secondary NVME from another manufacturer eclipses the Pro drive I mentioned earlier and ever the WD's. It clocks in at 1600TBW and it's a 960GB Gen 3 drive from 4 or 5 years ago. It's a bit odd to see a much older drive have so much higher endurance given the advances we've been seeing with NAND tech and the controllers. I would caution that if you really need endurance, go with at least a 2TB drive as that will get you 1200TBW or the 4TB will get you 2400TBW. It's still not as much as some other drives out there, but for the price I reckon these are worth an investment.

I’m a big fan of WD hard drives, but I’m honestly mixed-opinioned about this one. This is built for high performance and great for transferring or processing large files quickly as it advertises up to 7300MB/s sequential read speed and 6300-6600MB/s write speed. Its very much ideal for media collection and pulling videos off my camera. Files process much quicker in Premiere than a traditional drive. Even when loading larger games you can notice a big difference. My tests were done with Crystal Disk Mark, which is the same test WD used when reporting the advertised speeds. You also need to make sure your computer is PCIe Gen 4 compatible, it will work on older versions but at reduced speeds. My first test was the best one and have not been able to repeat the results since, which were about 6100MBs read and write which I was quite happy with. I was running these tests on a blank drive before loading it up with videos and media. Since then I have not been able to get numbers that high, but I’m starting to think it must be related to my system hindering its performance somehow. While test speed numbers are still blazing fast, I’m only getting anywhere from 3500-5000+ on read/write…sometimes less. This could be an issue with Crystal Disk Mark, but I also tried the same version WD used which was 8.0.1. Regardless of the fluctuations I’m still happy with the results. For perspective, my WD 3.5” Red hard drive gets around 150MBs read speeds, so its been a massive improvement moving my big files off it. I also have other name brand M2 drives I was testing with to compare and was nowhere near the advertised speeds for those…again it could be my system being bottlenecked elsewhere. I have attached a few pictures of my test speeds. One nice perk about this drive is that it comes with a 5 year warranty, assuming you don’t hit your Max Endurance/TBW within that time. 5 years is a long time with a hard drive and a solid warranty period. WD also has a Dashboard app for Windows that checks firmware and health of your device. It even checks non-WD hard drives, has a performance monitor, an option to manually run TRIM on your hard drives, and other settings. A couple of features I haven’t been able to fully get up and running yet, but it’s a nice optional tool to have. One thing I did wish it had was built-in hardware encryption security. This isn’t common for most M2 drives to have, but for high-end drives it is and since this seems to be a high-end drive, it would have been a nice feature to tack on. Overall, I do like the drive with its speed and warranty, but would like to see some improved consistent speeds. I also like the size options of up to a 4TB M2. The higher the capacity you go, the faster most of your speeds will be as well. In my case I had the 1TB which technically is slowest speeds compared to the 2 & 4TB drives, but its still super fast. You also get more TBW/Endurance with the higher storage capacity drives. However, the drive does not seem to stand-out compared to other similar drives. The drive, like any M2, was very simple to install, and just needed to format it for Windows to start using it.

The SN850X is a hardware refresh of the well-received SN850 SSDs drives that hit the market last year to take advantage of PCIe Gen 4 Speeds. With theoretical read speeds up to 7,300MB and write speeds that reach 6,300MB the SN850X is well suited for high-performance gaming and content creators that deal with large files. It’s even fast enough for the PlayStation 5 console for storage expansion. I highly recommend a heat sink for content creators to help sustain those higher speeds when moving large files around or just using it as a scratch disk for Adobe Premiere. I installed this drive on my Alienware X17 R1 and my benchmark results were pretty close to the numbers provided by WD. You won’t see this type of speed unless your device is PCIe Gen 4 compatible. A lot of the gaming laptops and desktops that came out last year have a good chance of being PCIe Gen 4 ready. My test results were as followed: Read: 6919MB Write: 6372MB Overall I’m impressed with the speed of the SN850X. From day-to-day usage, I don’t notice a difference but when it comes time to moving large files around or playing triple AAA titles I do notice how much quicker it is and spend a lot less time waiting for the game to load. If your hardware is PCIe Gen 4 compatible the SN850X is well worth the money, especially for content creators that prefer to spend a lot less time waiting for their files to finish loading or moving.

When it comes to hard drives and storage, Western Digital is a name that always pops up. I already use a 4 TB WD Black HDD for my game library, so when I got the opportunity to try out the WD Black SN850X, I was excited to upgrade my computer. I boot Windows off of a 256 GB M.2 drive, so I decided to "upgrade" it with the new WD Black SSD. WD has their own software for cloning called Acronis True Image, but I had some issues using it. I used a different program to clone my Windows drive to the new 1 TB drive, and after a few minutes, it was ready to go. My set-up has an Intel i9 9900k, so I don't have the latest and fastest motherboard with PCIe Gen 4. But still, compared to my old 256 GB SSD, the new WD SSD is a lot faster. Most notable gains were in the Write speeds, which saw a jump of around 1700 MB/s. The Read speeds also saw a jump of around 300 MB/s. Sequential Read and Write speed tests also saw a notable gain compared to my old 256 GB SSD. I also decided to compare the WD SSD to my 2.5 inch Samsung SSD (which I thought was already pretty fast). I was shocked how much of a difference using PCIe M.2 SSDs really affect speeds. Comparing the WD Black SSD to my WD Black HDD was also a big shock. You get a 14x gain in Read speeds and an almost 15x gain in Write speeds. Insane! These new SSDs from WD are really great. I feel confident that they will last and continue to perform without any issues. If you have a PCIe Gen 4 (or even Gen 3) compatible motherboard, this is the drive you want. If you're running Windows off of a HDD or even a 2.5 inch SSD, this will be a big upgrade for you.

This SSD is excellent. i was looking for an upgrade to my current HDD, at only 500gb i needed more room. The HDD i was using was reliable, stored files for my gaming needs and all that, but i needed more space, more speed, something better. I came upon this bad boy, which was a great solution to my problem. It has twice the storage capacity of my original hard drive, takes up less space in my PC, has less wires, and is faster! I used to take several hours download and installing games, but after upgrading to the WD SN850 NVMe, i only take half an hour depending on file sizes and all. This hard drive suits all my needs. Install was a breeze on my motherboard, you just have to make sure you have the standoff and fastener for your particular motherboard. Transfer of all my files was easy with a third-party software. In less than half an hour (i took a minute to eat a sandwich) i had the install complete, and computer back up and running. Now my load screens are much faster on heavy games such as Skyrim and destiny, read and write speeds are much faster on this drive, so I can download and have a game written to my drive in a much faster time frame. I run steam and several other applications in the background so having a hard drive that helps support my system and all its capable of is important, and this NVMe drive does the trick. I recommend it to people looking for a solid PC build, or a laptop if that's your fancy. I would certainly look into compatibility to make sure this will fit your motherboard.

WD_BLACK SN850X is a great drive to use on modern hardware. the speeds are quick and transferring to the drive is very quick. The NVMe drive was simple to put into a laptop, PC desktop, and Playstation 5. This drive isn't advertised for a PS5 but it does work beautifully so far from my experience using it. I didn't have any issues with game loading and the game loaded up at rapid speeds. Placed the WD_BLACK SN850X into a laptop and was getting the speeds shown in the pictures. I did place this drive inside a desktop and was hitting a little more speeds than above on my laptop nearing 5000 MB/s on reading. creating content and videos and then transferring them over to the drive was in a blink of an eye. I wanted to test this inside the Sony PlayStation 5 and it was great. it fits inside the PS5 with no problems and the PS environment catches above the 6000 MB/s mark. the PlayStation 5 recognized the drive and formatted the WD_BLACK. it's definitely an excellent SSD to have. Transferring GTAV, The Last of Us 2, and RE:village was super fast. Overall it isn't much to say, it is a reliable NVMe drive with great speeds. good for content creators but even better for gaming as its intended purposes. if you need a drive that pulls its punches this SN850X is the NVMe drive to get.

I've always known for Western Digital Black drives to be a top contender for gamers who are looking for the fastest drive speeds. I feel like most technology is coming back down for PC builders and if you are in the market for a NVME SSD drive, look no further. Install cannot be simpler for PC, laptops, or even portable enclosures. It's easy to boot up from and/or even have your drive be a secondary drive so you can store games. For me, being a photographer, I find it great to boot Lightroom or Photoshop very quickly. Being able to access photos to edit from this drive is great. Even for gaming, my steam library can boot games real quick. From a general consumer perspective, you can't go wrong with this drive. 1TB is a great volume size now a days. You have the reliability of Western Digital, no concern for it failing you but if it does WD has a good warranty period. I've also tried this drive as an external drive. I just used an enclosure to see if it would be beneficial to use. I think it's better use is as an internal drive so that the speeds of those drive can be better utilized.

Honestly I am very impressed with the speed of this wd black nvme drive. Booting up my games only took seconds. I tried it out on my pc playing several games. I was impressed in how much it helped with destiny 2 load. And playing planet coaster was able to load all the assets so much faster than before. I love that the packing is very simple and easy to open up and take out the drive. Installation in my pc was Incredibly easy and getting everything going was easy and fast. I can also confirm that the drive works on ps5 as with my final testing I checked to see if it would and to my surprise it was just as fast an occasionally faster than the internal drive. It was incredibly easy to install in the ps5. And I got it up and running very quickly but that fact that some games loaded faster than the internal drive was shocking to me. The speed of this drive really is incredible. Whatever you need to do on your pc including using photoshop or even some video editors you will definitely see the difference in speed from this drive. Highly recommend them

I have always been impressed at the improvements of storage across the years and love these NVMe models. They are quick and reliable fast storage great of quick easy to use for computers. The one I received came with a heatsink which is a nice touch but honestly not needed. I have been using this one for some time now and notice a vast improvement to everyday activities. I decided to run Windows 10 on here for quickness and was impress at the read/writes speeds. Install was very easy on most motherboards as it is a small slot located off to the side and out of the way of most cords. The NVMe Gen 4 is compatible with most however recommend checking your motherboard specs to make sure this one will work. It does not ever get hot but it does look pretty cool seeing a nice heatsink on it to match the rest of the look. Overall I have always been a fan of this brand and glad to see they are going into this market with their SSD storage sticks. I look forward to seeing the next Gen ones with even larger storage!

Western Digital’s SC850X NVMe brings a relatively easy upgrade to your M.2 enabled devices no matter what you’re doing with it. And with files getting increasingly larger in everyday use, a drive like this is becoming almost a requirement for some applications. If you are swapping out a SATA SSD for this unit, you are going to see a significant increase in speed while using this drive. This GEN 4 device has the capability of reaching speeds double that of SATA SSDs. The difference feels reminiscent of making the switch to a SATA SSD from a 7200 RPM HDD. It’s a significant boost in performance. First thing I tested this on was a massive game file transfer via Steam of about 650 GB worth of games. I walked away for what felt like a slit second and came back to see that the transfer was completed already. That used to be a much longer operation in the past with previously mentioned types of hardware. And launching said games is incredible. I can start the PC port of Spider-Man and be swinging in under 10 seconds. And it’s honestly closer to 5 seconds. I’m not exaggerating this at all. My photography workflow is so much smoother as well. I now prefer to dump what I’m working on this drive from my server temporarily and work within it. It makes getting through photos that are increasing in size every year a breeze to work on. Not a single hiccup from file reading/writing has come up yet. It feels like I gained some time back in that process directly from this hardware. I will warn that some who are looking to add this to a select few motherboards out there may find that the speeds are not up to par with what you may expect. And fixing this will likely require you to adjust your PCIE settings in the BIOS of your motherboard. Adding a second M.2 device can turn off the 5th and 6th SATA connections and without adjusting the PCIE settings, you will be limited to half the speed this drive is capable of as shown in the speed test I ran using crystal disk. Look to your motherboard’s instruction manual for the specifics on how to complete this task to unlock the full potential of this drive in your system. Another thing to consider is thermals. During the game transfer mentioned above, this drive was operating well above 135 F but cooled quickly once the transfer was completed. I recommend some care when installing this with that in mind. Be it additional or better fans, or even a heat spreader of some sort if your motherboard does not come with that standard. Decent cable management with good airflow would be my base recommendation.

Got as a replacement for a Gen3 drive that had served me well until it… didn’t. Since this Gen4 drive is on a Gen3 board, it’s working at the top speed the board can handle. I’m storing OS & games, loading & running them without issue, as well as general computer use (browser, word processing, etc.) Works as expected, and quite fast!

I was upgrading my MSI Laptop GE66 Raider over the fall. I started by upgrading my RAM from 32 to 64 GB. My next step is to upgrade both my SSD for faster performance. The WD SN850 is worth the price now that it is a bit cheaper. It was also a major upgrade from the previous WD Black which was a 750 that came with my laptop. I highly recommend it for those who are looking to boost their performance. Also for those who are relativity new and becoming more of a D.I.Y. AKA F around and find out. Make sure that you back up everything back up and have a reinstall of Windows, not sure about Linux but I believe it's the same process. I went to reinstall to new SSD and everything went well. I turn on the Laptop and it went to BIOS. I went on my phone and Lookup what the issue is. I just need to reinstall Windows. Again you gonna learn. Everything was fine after I reinstall. My laptop runs cooler than it has been for streaming and recording. It was roughly 95 to 97 C, it is now around 65 to 70 C. I highly recommend this to everyone who loves Computer and looking to max everything out.

This turned out to be a very fast NVME SSD. I am using it as a non-system drive on a Alienware Laptop system which supports Gen 4 SSD. I have attached the crystaldiskmark screenshot for single and five runs but here is some context to understand it better. Your typical SATA based SSDs will give you sequential read and write speeds around 550/450 mb/s respectively. My system NVME SSD does 3000 mb/s read & 2500 mb/s write (sequential), it is a Micron brand 2300 SSD and is plenty fast for all the activity including games. Now the drive from Sandisk (1TB 850X), does 6500 mb/s read & 4900 mb/s write (sequential) which is a great leap over a typical OEM brand SSD. I tried playing games with it though did not notice a huge difference in load time because as I already mentioned existing SSD speeds were probably not saturated by these games (RDR2). I next tried photoshop premier elements and I this I can feel the difference in saving and loading the big video file without measuring. It is not that it was slow with last SSD but it is just that smidge faster with the Sandisk 850X. So to summarize, this is a really fast SSD almost near the advertised speed, I may not upgrade an existing NVME SSD with this if that is working fine for you (as you may not see tangible benefits) but if you are looking to buy one, this will be my first choice. If your daily job need you to read and write huge files, by all means upgrade, it will be worth it. In my test the disk did not go above 45 C and it is rated for much higher, but I will probably put a slim heatsink on it just to ensure overall temp remain low.

I would recommend this to a friend
