    Excellent large-capacity backup device

I needed a new backup drive to replace an older 3TB model that had run out of space. Setup was very easy but I was having issues with incomplete backups. I found that I had inadvertently plugged this into an older USB port; once I moved to a USB-3 port the issue resolved and it's been syncing without issue since.

    higher broken rate

This is second year to order BestBuy's large capacity HDD, the price are very good. However, in the last year, I had to return my HDD because performance issue. In this year, I ordered two of 10TB HDD, one is arrive with origin package and work fine, the other one arrived with a opened / repacked package. It Read/Write speed is only less than 50 MB/s, more seek noise, and transfer abort sometimes, so looks a broken HDD. The broken rate is 100% in last year and 50% in this year, not bad and improve a little.

Bent USB port - unable to connect cable

    Posted .

Before I could even use the drive for the first time I found I was unable to connect the USB cable to the drive because the usb port was slightly bent in a way that no usb cable could be connected to the drive. I brought it back to Best Buy, but it had been more than a couple months since initial purchase so they would not let me exchange or refund and offered no help in fixing the issue. After spending a long time carefully reshaping the port with tools I was finally able to force a usb cable into the port. The drive appears to work fine now, but I'm not going to risk removing that cable ever or I might not ever be able to get it back in.

    Great Drive and value

WD had always been more reliable for me. I shucked 3 via molex adapter to set up a RAID 5 array for a backup server. Then a couple more to image a big workstation. Very pleased.

Very slow extended write times, I only use these in write-once/read-often scenarios.

Clicking Noise of Death On Arrival

    Posted .

I bought this during Black Friday through BestBuy.com for $179. It was doomed from the start; the hard drive would make clicking noises every 6 seconds. I’m all too familiar with the sound of a dying hard drive; I knew the deal was too good to be true. Thankfully, I made the return deadline. I was surprised to see overwhelmingly positive reviews from BestBuy because there’s a famous online competitor with more mixed reviews. Here’s my theory. A hard drive consists of moving parts with spinning platters (like a tiny compact record player). If you mail order this product, it’s more susceptible to damage during shipping; as opposed to picking up the same product from your local retail store (because their supply arrives in bulk that’s likely handled with more care.) I’ve witnessed residential couriers throwing around packages like footballs. Instead of exchanging for the same drive at my local Best Buy, I opted for a refund because the trust was broken. 10TB is a massive amount of memory and you will be investing a good portion of your life on it. Every hard drive has a limited life span. More so with spinning hard drives (like this one). Data loss is inevitable. You cannot prevent data loss, you can only postpone the process. When it comes to data, you never want to put all your eggs in one basket. It’s all about redundancy; multiple backups of the same data is the best way to insure its survival. If your data is precious to you, I think you should opt for a dual hard drive setup in which you have two hard drives of the exact same capacity, mirroring each other. In a Raid 1 setup, when you copy files to one drive, the data is automatically being duplicated to the second drive as well. If one of the drives fail, you still have the other!

Does not work with Mac TimeMachine

    Posted .

The description on this product is misleading at best. It says that the product is compatible with Mac OS -- and that you can use time machine and that there's also the option of automated backups with the WD backup utility. WD does not have a backup utility for Mac. Also there is a bug with this drive and Time Machine -- automated backups fail repeatedly because the drive goes to sleep....even though that feature is turned off....both on the drive and the iMac. This is known issue - we went back and forth so much trying to fix it we are now past the period to return the drive. Can only do one time manual backups.....not helpful. Probably fine for Windows - would not recommend if you need this for a Mac.

    It's only 9TB

I've been buying hard drives for years. It's never a suprise when a drive comes up a few MB or GB shy of it's listed capacity but this HD advertised at 10TB has only 9.09TB. That's a 10% shortage.

    Failed within 60 days

Drive failed within 60 days. The return process has been a mess so far and their own support page gives an error. The drives themselves are usually decent, but I believe the issue lies with the enclosure/power supply. Either way, I wouldn't recommend this product at all.

This was the most amazing deal, and I was so happy with it. Connected easily to serve as Time Machine backup on my iMac. It worked great. For about 10 days. Then it didn't.

Drive wouldn't power on after just a few days of use - I have a smaller one I use for my Xbox and I tried the power adapter for it as well and no luck.
