Drive was used a total of two times. The thing won’t even turn on anymore and I have had it literally for about a year sitting on a desk.
Never damages or anything. Absolutely junk.

Great Drive With A High Temperature

This is a great little drive: It has a massive amount of storage at a very reasonable price (if you can catch it on sale), in a relatively small and attractive package, was plug and play and thoroughly easy to use even without installing the Western Digital software that came with the drive (I also did not have to format it out of the box, although on a Mac you will assuming you don't have an NTFS driver installed on your Mac). I gave it four stars because of one major problem I encountered. Please read on to learn more:
PLEASE NOTE: The read and write speeds and temperature readings demonstrated below were not achieved with 'laboratory software'; these were real world values that someone copying or moving large HD or UHD video files (or other similarly large files) to the drive may experience.
The write speeds on this drive are quite good. Not great, but quite good. The easystore 12TB WD hard drive bests its 16TB brother in the write category, on the same USB hub on a different port, by holding an average of 198-220 MBs Windows write performance while its 16TB brother only pulled around a Windows write average of 123 MBs under load (i.e., large file transfers of +10GB or bigger). And I may actually be able to squeeze a bit more performance out of it out of it by connecting it directly to my PC, but I haven't tried that yet as the performance is satisfactory for my needs. All-In-All, quite good for a mechanical hard drive.
Read performance is stellar: Windows average of around 300 MBs to an internal SSD across the same USB 3.0 hub. Not much to bring up on the read side of things.
The one star I knocked off was because of how hot this drive can get. And this drive can get HOT! Very hot. Particularly under load. Small file copies are not a problem... I saw no discernable temperature increase when copying small files, even large numbers of small files, but when larger files (i.e., +10 GB or greater) are being copied or moved, the temperature climbs rapidly. When I first started moving files to the drive from my internal SSD, the temp readings on the WD drive shot from a balmy 32c to a whopping 56c in about six minutes and continued to climb from there. It got so hot, in fact, that I was afraid the drive was going to cook itself before I could find a way to cool it down (ultimately I had to stop the file move until I found a way to cool the drive). The problem was easy enough solved: I placed it on top of a table fan next to its big brother. This forced copious amounts of air through the hard drive case and that brought the temperatures back into a much more normal range of 32c-35c. So if you are planning on getting this drive, get some form of active cooling with it if you're going to be putting it under heavy load (a fan to sit on top of or underneath it, something to force large amounts of air through the case to sink the heat away from the drive) because it will heat up very quickly to a point that hard drives should not heat up to.
Curiously, I had the exact same heat issues with the WD 16TB easystore drive (actually the heating was a little faster and a little more extreme on the 16TB easystore) along with the speed issues I noted earlier. I'm not sure if the heating is a design flaw in the drives themselves, or just poor ventilation in the cases with no internal heat sinks. Either way, again, an active cooling apparatus is your best bet to keep this drive, and I suspect as other easystore Drives (certainly the 16TB which I've also personally work with), from overheating.
All-In-All, even despite the heat issues, I'm very pleased with this drive. Again, large capacity, easy on the wallet (on sale), and hey it fits with the black decor of my rig. The only thing it's missing are a few RGB accents and it would be practically perfect. So, if you catch it while it's reduced, get it while the getting is good (with an active cooling solution, of course).

I needed a secure, easy to use backup hard drive to store my desktop files and the WD-easystore 12TB External USB 3.0 HDD fills this bill nicely. It was easy to set up and configure the times during the week when the files are actually backed up. it is silent in operation, takes up little room and you hardly know it's there until it starts backing up the files.
I would recommend this to anyone who needs a second storage system for securely saving their files.

Using it to store photos I edit and videos of the kids and everything else in between. Purchased it for 199.99 so I feel good about the price. It's a Western Digital and I have had no issues with them in the past 5 years. I can recommend this one to you.

WD External Drives Still Compete

This drive provided expected performance on USB a 3.0/3.1 mini-B to USB-A cable. The included tools are partially useful, and the downloadable tools can be very good, depending upon your use case. The drive enclosure is smaller than most but still very quiet. The LED activity light can be switched off. An excellent value at the price I paid - cheaper than any external offered by big box stores.

I'm a big fan of WD hard drives. I've owned several brands over the last 25 years and WD drives held up the best. Yes, there have been a few that died, but all HDDs will do that after a while, hence you always back-up your data. These particular ones (Easystore and MyBook) come with WD Discovery tools, which is particularly helpful. The WD Essentials line of HDD is not supported by WD Discovery and comes with WD Lifeguard, which I don't care for. I currently have a 3 TB (relegated to storage/standby/extra), 4, 8, and one 12 TB external HDDs that are the Easystore versions. I also have one 12 TB Essentials version that works fine, but you can't turn off the imbedded sleep time, like you can on the Easystore (via the WD Discovery tools). HDDs are a personal choice. Some like Seagate, some like WD, some like generic. As I said before, WD has worked for me the best and consistent over all the years. A little advise though ... If you intend to move any of the drives around (I move one from my laptop to my desktop to edit movies ... the desktop has more umph) get an extra cable and wall adaptor. That way you're not constantly pull cables out of the USB adaptor or wall/extension electrical outlet. Makes life easier.

Reliability is the best aspect of this HDD. I have been using WD My Books for years, and they never fail, they never over heat, and the design looks perfect alongside your other components in a media unit. Best of all, it seamlessly handles plug and play features through your television usb.
Great to store videos, music, pictures, without any worries of failure. Also, transfer speeds over USB are great, but hope that one day these will also have a thunderbolt port.

Like many, I grabbed this when it was on sale simply to get a cheap 12 TB drive to throw into my media center PC as a storage drive for movie files I didn't want on my 8 bay Synology NAS.
As a USB drive it worked fine, since I had to connect it via USB to copy the data off of the two drive I already had in there, a 10 TB and a 4 TB. Fortunately neither was full and I could fit it all on here. Then I removed the 4 TB from the system, ripped this apart to get at the SATA drive inside, and installed it and balanced out the files.
Works just fine internally as well.
For the price, it was a phenomenal deal.

I was worried because some reviewers said they shucked their drives and then there were dummy drives inside them like someone else had silently shucked them and replaced them with junk drives. So I ran some speed tests on these before disassembly band they are excellent. Getting around 350mb on a two drive 24t raid 0 , perfect for my needs.
These would be fine as standalong spinning drives also as long as you had redundant backups.
Saved like $400 vs getting the bare drives.

Setup was easy, plug and play. Works just like the other two I purchased years before. Now have three of them hooked hp to the same machine and all worked with no issues. Used a USB 3 hub to connect all three to one USB 3 port on the PC. Value rated at 5 stars because I purchased from Deal of the Day special price of $80.00 off.

We bought this for a Mac, so first thing was to re-format for Mac from PC. This was a simple and easy process. After that, the drive has performed perfectly.
I really like WD drives. I have yet to have one fail on me. I usually just need to graduate to a bigger drive and use the old ones for static storage of files I don't really need on my computer.
This has worked well as I label each drive as to what's store on it and only access them a couple of times a year. None of these drives has failed yet, either.

It works how it should, ton of storage and not too slow. It is an external drive so it's slower than a standard drive. It's not super loud, i can hear it accessing but it's not obnoxious. Haven't noticed excessive heat even after installing a 200gb game.

These are solid, reliable long-term storage with reasonable storage space (I'm a video content creator, so HDD's fill up fast for me). The are almost the largest you can get without going to a professional NAS system. They are solid performers and will last many, many years. They're not the fastest thing available, but they are the fastest of this type (without getting your own internal drive and sticking it in an external enclosure... and you'll spend about twice as much).
