Shucked ad added to server
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. When ever the biggest capacity of these go on sale I buy a couple of them. Like others, I test the drive by doing a pre clear test, then if they pass, I shuck the case and add them to my Unraid server. This saves typically $150 over buying just the drives. I have been doing this for a couple of years with no problems. KEEP IN MIND: my review of these is based on when they are on sale... not retail price.

Hasn't Ever Failed
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I work in professional film and video and have had hard drives fail on me (more than once). And many will say that all drives fail at some time. And I believe that. I've had more Seagates fail on me early. I've bought probably over 30 of these WD externals and have yet to have one fail. So I'll keep buying these to backup and archive my footage.

Large Capacity, Good Speed, No ON/OFF switch
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Excellent Drive, plenty of space, decent speed. The only down side I can find is that this Does NOT have a power on/off switch and is always on with your PC powered on. As A workaround I have mine connected through a USB hub which has individual port on/off switches. This allows me to use the Windows Safe Eject function to disconnect the device and allow it to sleep. If a built in on/off switch is important to you then you should look for the Western Digital version sold as a "Elements" drive I have numerous Western Digital drives (Green, Blue, Black, Raid Edition Re, and Gold) and have never had problems with any of them.

Great external, shuck it for a WD140EDGZ.
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Great drive with tons of space. It does require the use of a power cable (included) along with the USB cable. It's more of stationary drive than a grab and go type of drive. I shucked it (removed the internal drive) and I got a white label WD drive - WD140EDGZ. The drive is transferring at the 7200RPM range.

Lots of Storage!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Lots of storage! Works perfectly. I would recommend formatting to EXT4 file system (much faster and easier on the hard drive)...although, that only works natively on Linux Operating Systems. However, you can download and install a program providing Windows with the ability to read EXT4 file systems. NTFS will beat up your hard drive (it’s a HUGE part of the reason why Windows slows down over time...either way, Windows is worthless)

Cheap, reliable storage.
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If you just want to use this as-is, it should be very easy to set up. If you intend to take the internal drive out of this for use inside a computer (shucking) then you should be aware that many computers won't support this without some hardware modification (google "WD white label pin fix)

Always on, always working...
||Posted . Owned for more than 2 years when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I use this drive to stream all my HQ music (DSF, FLAC). It is on all the time and can deliver a stream to multiple endpoints at the same time. Not bad for a backup drive!!
