Good alternative to a bare drive
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Easy to take apart and install into a computer. It’s also decently cheaper than a bare drive

Cheap, reliable storage.
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If you just want to use this as-is, it should be very easy to set up. If you intend to take the internal drive out of this for use inside a computer (shucking) then you should be aware that many computers won't support this without some hardware modification (google "WD white label pin fix)

Convenient & Quiet
||Posted . Owned for 1.5 years when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I use this as a local backup attached to my NAS (which also backs up to the cloud). Works great, no complaints in the two years I've had it so far. But it on sale, though. Never pay full price for hard drives.

WD all day
||Posted . Owned for 1 year when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I’m a long time WD buyer, although with these drives I hate how they have taken away or stopped using their SmartWare software to backup files. You gotta use 3rd party stuff, which isn’t as user friendly. Otherwise it does the job.

Good drives
||Posted . Owned for 6 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Same as WD RED 14TB drives inside, only white label. But same pcb and firmware inside. Just know these run very hot inside the plastic enclosure they come in. about 15 to 20c hotter. But I use four of these inside a Synology DS920+ and they run much cooler in the NAS. avg 34-36c vs 56-58c inside the WD OEM plastic enclosures. It seems those plastic enclosures are not well ventilated or are poor at dissipating heat which will shorten the lifespan.

Very large and adequate for backup
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've bought a lot of hard drives over the years and only time will tell how this one performs, and for how long until it ultimately fails as they all do. On the plus side, Western Digital has a very good reputation for reliability and customer service. The drive has one of the largest capacities of any single-drive model on the market, and Best Buy had it on sale at a very reasonable dollar-per-byte price point, making it a relative bargain. On the minus side, it has a 5400 RPM drive mechanism that is well below average in terms of speed. It has a USB 3.0 interface, but the drive speed is the limiting factor. I would recommend against using this as a boot drive or a boot drive backup. It's way too slow for either purpose. The SanDisk Extreme Pro SSD, also made by Western Digital, is a much better choice as an external boot drive or bootable backup, but a a much greater cost per byte. However, the speed is more than adequate as a media server or for serial backups. This is a great drive for use as an extended Time Machine backup. I did not test the included backup software on the drive. The drive is formatted for Windows computers out of the box, but it includes backup software for Mac computers as well. However, Apple's Time Machine is a better choice for Mac users, but that requires reformatting the drive. I have an extensive library of high-res music files, downloaded movies and personal photos. With Time Machine and this drive, I don't have to worry about accidental deletion of older files.

Fast, Solid, Great Value Drive
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Excellent value on this drive. It's not a shingled drive, so you get great performance on the data transfer rate. I copied massive amounts of files, almost all in the 20-50mb size, from a smaller Seagate Hub 8TB drive (also USB 3) and it maintained a 150MB/sec rate +/- 25MB or so. Almost bought another, but decided 28 TB of storage at home was probably overkill for now.
