14TB- big and fast external drive

Benchmarks over 200MB/sec with USB 3 and a device, like an SSD, able to supply it with continuous high-speed data. With over 10TB used the benchmarks are a little slower, just under 200MB/s. This is not an SMR (Shingled Magnetic Recordiong) disk.

Runs a bit hot

My only gripe is that it tends to run a bit hot. After an hour of use, the temperature has gotten up to 53 Celsius. As a result, I place it in front of a box fan to keep it cool. I have noticed this with other external WD drives that use the same enclosure that I have bought over the last 14 years.

You can use a tiny USB fan to flow air through these openings and that should help with cooling the HD if you're backing things up for long periods of time. Chances are though it won't be necessary and the passive cooling design should suffice.

Great Backup Drive
