I bought two of these based on good experience with the 14 TB model. Unfortunately, both of the 18 TB models disconnected on their own every time I reconnected them. I tried every combination of hub, adapter, and USB cable, including the ones that were working perfectly with the 14 TB drive. The problem is always followed the 18 TB drives. The problem occurred whether I have the sleep timer, setting for the drive on or off. Both of the drives past all of the diagnostics, but still with disconnect, no matter how I connected them to the mat. I would highly recommend avoiding these if you have a Mac. Returning both.

At $250, it looks great on paper. But the drive is extremely slow. It may be OK for some use cases, but it's going to take years to transfer 18TB of data from/to the drive.

Beware. WD has mistakenly packaged some with the wrong drives inside. The brand new, sealed 18 TB hard drive that I purchased had a 2 TB hard drive in it, although the label and serial number both indicated an 18 TB drive. This is not a formatting issue, but a totally incorrect drive inside. Working with WD right now to hopefully get the issue fixed. The other two I purchased at the same time both had the correct 18 TB drive inside.

Fabulous hard drives. I bought these for Chia farming and so far these have been holding very well. It has been about a 1 year since I have been farming. The only thing I would change the plug it takes up 2 spots on the surge protector, wish they used the older style where the adapter was outside the plug.

    High Capacity, High Speed

This is a fairly large (physical size) external drive without any bells & whistles like networking -- just USB-wired storage requiring external power. But, at 18TB, it's a LOT of storage, and came at a good price. It comes with some software that I haven't tried. It worked fine right out of the box after being plugged into the wall and connected to a Type-A USB-3 port on my Asus motherboard, with its full capacity showing as available on my Windows 11 File Explorer. It uses the now pretty much deprecated USB Micro-B 3.0 jack on the rear of the unit, and a cable is provided. I have not measured it, but the data write speed is surprisingly fast. I copied folders with amounts of data I presumed would require most of the day, but it tool less than an hour to transfer! I LIKE that! It has a little white light on the front that blinks annoyingly when the computer is turned off (it's on steadily when the computer is on). And it is a little bit noisy, with frequent clicks, whirrs and pops at low enough volume not to be intrusive even when it sits within a couple feet of the user's ear. By contrast, my much older 8TB Seagate runs in velvety silence. I have only had it for a couple weeks so I cannot address its reliability or durability, but it has operated flawlessly so far. I like it and would recomnend it. It's nice having all that headroom.
