I tossed all the WD software and just used DiskUtility to erase and format it. I partitioned it so that half of it was for Time Machine backups and the other half for regular storage. It seems a little loud which doesn't annoy me, but suggests it might not be as perfectly tuned as it might be. The true measure of this drive will be in how long it lasts. They all fail at some point and if I get 5+ years out of this one, I think I'll be happy. If I get past the 1 year mark, I may be able to recommend it, but not until then.
