A compact and reliable external HDD

It offers decent transfer speeds for moving and copying files. If only external SSDs were more affordably priced in that storage size, that would be a more viable alternative for content creators.

Works great and great for shucking

Fast and no crazy encryption on the controller board, so you can easily rescue your data if the electronics fail. I shuck mine pretty quickly though. The drive in the enclosure I got is the white box version of the 8tb wd red. Keep in mind that there was a SATA POWER spec change recently so if you have an old psu and the bare drive won’t spin up it’s because of the change. You can fix the problem either by taping over pin 3 of the power connector with a tiny piece of tape. Or getting a new power supply. Or using a molex to sata power adapter (which for unrelated reasons does not trigger the problem) I do not recommend the adapter for long term use as most of them are badly made and flaky.

Performance/Price Point

I can't speak to longevity, but the current batch of these should have RED drive in it. On sale, this is far cheaper than buying REDs if you have a NAS.

Has adequate storage to backup my desk-top Mac.

It easily stores other important written documents.

Easy to use and speeds are very efficient and reliable. Especially on sale when you're able to get it for less than $20 a TB it's worth the money.
