The cost of storage is/has/and continues to drop through the floor (especially for spin platter designs...SSD will follow). So, getting this guy for the price, to serve as the home server, was a no-brainer. WD has a good reputation. I've had several smaller sizes of this design with no problem. This one has become the music, video, and movie files server location. I'll be adding a second solely as a backup of this one (...because...they're really inexpensive...even if you need to replace one...FROM YOUR BACKUP! :) ). Beware, they sell models advertising "personal cloud" which is the same thing as making a drive available to your local wifi network...don't spend the extra $40-$80 bucks on those models...just attach this one to your network. Yes, those models provide software that manages multiple touching of files but when does that REALLY happen in a household?

Item works as intended, installation is easy to do, the hard drive works with its independent power supplied by a transformer, the connection to the PC and the hard drive is with an USB cable that has an specific connector at the hard drive side. It makes an expected sound when writing or reading data.

I bought this for additional storage and couldn't beat the price at the time. Works great but it took me a while to realize that it's an Energy Star type unit. It will shut down to conserve power when not being used. When you access the drive after not using it for a period of time, the unit takes about twenty to thirty seconds to power back up.

This drive is not too big physically but probably not something you want to use as a ‘carry around’ portable. The 8TB capacity is large enough to back up all of my 50,000+ photos and other video projects. It has good speed when transferring files. I haven’t had any problems transferring about 1TB of files to it from another drive. Under normal reading and writing of files it doesn’t seem too loud but I notice a light clicking sound every 10 seconds when the drive is idle.
I do wish the drive would’ve come with a Micro B to USB-C cable.

Great Price for Western Digital external hard drive. Drives inside are usually non-tler white label hgst or wd reds. YMMV. As packaged works great as a reasonable fast mass storage backup only spinning up when needed. USB 3.0 but of course limited to the sata limits of the mechanical hard drive. 100-150 MB's maximum.
