Great storage

Cracked it open and put the bare drive in my computer, but no spin up. Internet sleuthing determined that there is a setting that prevents the drive from running if it receives power on the 5V. So to get around that, I dug out a molex to SATA converter from my bin of parts, plugged it into a molex line off my PSU, and it worked like a charm.

Good shucking drive, no longer WD Reds

I don't actually use these as USB drives. However, they're no longer the Western Digital Reds that people have reported in earlier reviews. They're now generic Western Digital drives with no sub branding. Which makes me pretty certain they're SMR drives to keep the price low. So if you are avoiding SMR drives, this might not be the drive for you.
